Chapter 147
Citizen? What the hell?
“Sapphyra—”
“That’s Dragon Queen! Try not to be too casual during a battle, citizen.” She said through gritted teeth. “And please get to safety while I push this Monolith back!”
Citizen, that fucking word again. Dammit Sapphyra.
And what does she mean, being too casual? Who even talks like that?!
Still, she was right. I gave her one last look and took off into the air. It would take miles before I cleared myself of the monolith’s reach and even then, the rest of its body was rising up as well. Meaning more people were going to die.
Like my mate…and my parents.
“Shit!”
I’d lost sight of Erek but I wasn’t worried about Gramps, he can help himself and if need be he could help Sapph too.
I made my way to the prison and walked up to Voss. An invisible wall smacked me in the face like a rudely open door. I groaned.
“Ow. Voss?”
He sat there behind his new fancier desk, sharpening his nails with a piece of metal. He wouldn’t acknowledge me but I knew he was there.
“Voss, come on. Let me through, it’s a matter of life and death!” My hands pressed against the wall, testing how much it would give under my strength.
“Not a chance. Thanks to the reconstruction, the building is pretty reinforced, so I’d advise you to pull up a seat and get cozy for the show.”
Show. He was talking about my mate like she was entertainment. That made my blood boil.
“Voss—”
“Captain Voss, to you.” He corrected with an annoyed tone.
“Don’t give me any of your bullshit today man, I need to talk to Wyatt about his wife. Something's wrong with Sapph.”
“Yeah, she continues to put up with you two. And I thought my taste in men was awful.” He mutters, filing away at his cuticles, unbothered.
I know I shouldn’t have, but I punched his wall. It didn’t give but it did make him put the nail file down.
“Guy. Go home. I’m not letting you back here just so you can try to break him out. Besides, if the message is that dire, I’ll pass it on to him myself.” His eyes softened. “You have my word.”
He wasn’t lying but the message coming from him wouldn’t have the same urgency, wouldn’t translate as well either. And it would leave Wyatt with more questions than answers—something he hates.
So I did the only thing I could think to do at the time—though I’m not proud of it.
“She’s pregnant, Voss.” I let it out, the pain I’ve been carrying with Sapph this whole time. “She’s pregnant and she just got an antidote for the dragonsbane poison in her blood.”
Voss closed his eyes, turning his head away like he couldn’t bear to hear anymore.
Good. Deal with it like I had to.
“It’s my baby in there too, Voss.”
“What?” He whispered, turning to me with wide eyes.
I smiled, exhausted but still happy. “She got pregnant with my baby too. So that’s three lives in danger, not just two.” I pressed against the wall as a small scream escaped from between his trapped lips.
Come on, you’re not a heartless bastard yet!
“Please, Voss. If you won’t do it for me, do it for her. Do it for my babies.”
He slammed his hands on his desk and stood up.
“Living Prison: Sentence over.” He announced his ability and the wall quickly vanished, finally allowing me through. I grinned, stepping up to give him a hug.
“Voss—”
“Nope.” He pushed me back with one hand. “You have five minutes to tell him what you need and then that’s it.” He glanced at where his hand still lingered on my chest. With a heavy gulp, he snatched his hand back and walked off.
“Five minutes. Not a second more, Domingo.”
I still hated my adopted name.
I nodded at him. “Got it! And thank you!”
He waved me off as I took flight, making use of the new vaulted ceilings.
My hands wrapped around the bars as I searched the dark for him. Once I felt a little sleepy, I noticed the bars were wrapped very lightly in dragonsbane. Shit. I pulled my hands back and called out for him.
I’m no good to anyone if I take a nap right now.
“Wyatt?”
“Guy?” Wyatt dropped from the ceiling. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“How did you get on the…you know what, nevermind. We have a big problem.”
“Would it have anything to do with the monolith waking up outside?” Rupert asked, dropping down from the ceiling next to Wyatt. He yawned, not really paying me any attention.
My mouth twisted like I’d just tasted something sour and bitter.
“Yeah, that’s a part of it. Barbie did it.”
That got their attention.
“Sapph made a wish. She wished—”
“To be a hero again?” Wyatt narrowed his eyes, interrupting me. Of course he would guess something close to it.
“Sort of. Her exact words were: “I wish I could remember how to be a superhero again.”
Rupert slapped his face. Wyatt banged his head against the bars.
“What? I mean I know it’s bad but—-”
“Monkey’s paw rules, Guy. It means that wishes always have consequences.”
“The consequences must have caused the monolith to awaken early.” Rupert chimed in, stroking his chin in thought. It was eerie how much of a clone he is of Wyatt when it comes to mannerisms and speech.
“Is that why she called me…citizen?” Even just recalling how she talked about me had me upset.
Wyatt furrowed his brow and tilted his head. “What?”
“Yeah, she looked at me and called me a citizen. Not Guy, not babe, or anything cute…just citizen” I pressed my forehead against the bars and let out a shaky breath. “She saved me but it was like she didn't recognize me.”
“Oh boy. That’s rough.” Rupert said, making me feel even worse. The last person I want sympathy from is him.
“She didn’t recognize you…or she doesn’t remember who you are.” Wyatt said, gripping the bars from his side.
My heart dropped as I processed his words.
“What?!”
