Chapter 1776: The "Scary" Hero
Chapter 1776: The “Scary” Hero

“Phew… Guess we’re finally done. That took a bit over ten minutes… More than I would’ve wanted.”
Nepheline sighed in relief, glancing around her surroundings. The entire formation she and her husband had created had entrapped over a hundred thousand giant blazing ants.
They kept coming from the ant nest itself, so their numbers continuously replenished. Because of their strange spiritual and beast aura abilities, they were quite tough nuts to crack.
“Aquarina! Thanks for helping me, dear. I might’ve gotten cocky before. Without your help, I would’ve taken much longer…”
Nepheline recognized that her daughter had helped more than she would’ve wanted to admit. She really just wanted to warm up fighting on her own, but in the end, they were short on time. Her daughter’s aid, although reckless, ended up coming in clutch.
“Ah, so now you’re happy I helped?” Aquarina asked, crossing her legs as she sat on a mountain of corpses. “You were acting all cocky before, mom!”
“I’m sorry, okay?” Nepheline sighed, patting her daughter’s head. “I think we should get going, though… the corpses here, however… Should we bring them along?”
“I think I could carry a few, but there are too many,” Aquarina said.
“Don’t worry, your father can take care of that,” Nepheline said. “His shadows are like another dimension.”
“Yeah, I’ll do it,” Shade said, suddenly appearing behind Aquarina’s shadow, emerging from it as if her shadow were a liquid.
“Uwah?!” Aquarina got slightly scared, almost falling off the mountain of ant corpses, but her father grabbed her hand. “Dad! You scared me!”
“Sorry,” Shade said. “Alright, I’ll get it done.”
With a single thought, Shade’s shadows encompassed the entire domain, shaping into an endless abyssal maw that engulfed everything into eternal darkness.
FLAAASH!
And then, the domain and everything else was gone. Everyone stood in front of the ant nest’s entrance.
“E-Eh? Everything’s gone?!” Aquarina gasped, looking around in disbelief. “How…?!”
“The corpses are inside my Abyssal Shadow Dimension,” Shade explained. “Well, it has always been a rather large and useful place to store things or people… though, strong enough beings can shatter through it and easily free themselves, like when I fought the Demon King. Lolth, when she descended on Arachne, would’ve done the same, so I didn’t use it on her, as I knew the result would be the same… I get a harsh backlash, so it’s not something I aim for.”
“Ah, so that’s… it,” Aquarina said. “But was it always this big?”
“No… In the three years since our battle against Lolth, I’ve been growing stronger. This Dimension has expanded several hundred times,” Shade explained. “I don’t know just how big it could become one day. It is also becoming tougher… I’m trying to figure out new ways to use it. What I did recently is one of them.”
“Shadow Teleportation, right?” Aquarina asked.
“Indeed,” Shade nodded. “It seems you know my techniques quite well, huh?”
“I’m a big fan!” Aquarina giggled, as Shade smiled, patting her head and kissing her forehead.
“Good girl,” he nodded, spoiling his daughter as usual. “I will help you expand your own Abyssal Shadow Space later. I was thinking about giving you a fragment of mine. What do you think?”
“T-That’s possible?!” Aquarina got excited. “Yes!”
“Wait, Shade! Don’t spoil our girl so much…” Nepheline sighed, facepalming.
“I wasn’t spoiling her. She has been working hard. She deserves a good reward,” Shade said. “Well, let’s see how she performs here before we make a decision.”
“Hmm, you’re not wrong… Alright then, let’s hurry. I want to get back to Esmeralda as quickly as I can,” Nepheline said, cracking her knuckles. “Hey, kids! Come here already!”
Silvia, Justicio, Agua, and Pyuku were left there, staring at the scene in disbelief… The eternal darkness they saw appearing and devouring everything, which they thought for a moment would’ve swallowed them as well, left a deep memory in their hearts.
To put it simply, they were a bit scared, paralyzed in fear, in actuality. This was one of Shade’s abilities, which he did unintentionally. He could inflict a Minor Fear Curse on those who watched his powers and his darkness if they weren’t strong enough.
“I’m sorry they’re paralyzed… I might’ve overdone it before,” Shade sighed, waving his hands as he cut down threads of darkness connected to Aquarina’s friends.
“Aaah!”
“What the…?!”
“Huh?”
“Ugh…”
Once he did, all four of them thankfully came back to their senses. It seemed there was still a long way to go for them to ever become as strong as Shade and his wife, or even his daughter, if they were susceptible to such “simple and weak” effects.
“Are you guys alright? Sorry about that! My dad used his technique without thinking a bit…” Aquarina sighed, glaring at her father. Shade felt slightly embarrassed.
“I-I’m fine, yeah,” Justicio nodded. “That was a bit… well, scary.”
“It was… strong…?” Agua muttered. “Ugh, well, I’m glad we’re done with the ants for now…”
“Yeah… Augh… I can’t believe a hero could hold such a sinister-looking power…” Silvia said, grabbing her head. “Ahh… But I think I’m fine.”
As Aquarina heard Silvia speaking, she noticed her father lowering his head in shame.
“Sinister…?”
Although he didn’t show it on his usually expressionless face, his eyes clearly showed his sorrow.
He was definitely sorry for the accident he had caused, but it seemed that such simple words had hurt him.
Of course, as a hero who had lived for almost forty years, it wasn’t as if he was going to let that affect him deeply.
After all, Nepheline knew that throughout his life, Shade had always been a subject of fear and terror to other people.
Through their journey, from country to country, it was always Shade who was looked down on the most among the other heroes.
“What a strange power…”
“I-Is he really a hero?”
“So sinister…”
“There is no way a hero could hold such a scary-looking power!”
“D-Don’t touch me!”
Even when he tried to help people, children would cry and run away, or people would quickly step away from his presence.
“Shade, she’s just a kid. Don’t take it personally.”
Nepheline patted his shoulder as Shade looked at the floor in silence.
“I haven’t said anything…”
