Chapter 1001: Squad Captains
“Damn it… I want to be on the same team as Sasuke-kun,” muttered Ino with frustration.
Shikamaru shrugged. “It can’t be helped, Ino. You’ll have to get over it.”
Ignoring Shikamaru’s advice, Ino glanced at Sasuke from the corner of her eye, then turned to Sai, and after that, toward Neji. She sighed, “Not only am I not on Sasuke-kun’s team, but I’m not even on Neji-kun or Sai-kun’s team. That billboard got lucky; at least she gets to be on the same team as Sai-kun. On the other hand, I’m stuck with Shikamaru and Chōji!”
In fact, it wasn’t just Ino who was distraught about not being on the same team as Sasuke; many girls were deeply saddened, and they could only sigh helplessly.
At this moment, Chōji turned to his best friend. “Shikamaru, who do you think will be our instructor?”
Once again, Shikamaru shrugged. “Beats me.” Then he thought to himself, ‘Should be a member of the Sarutobi Clan.’ He was aware of the relationship the Ino-Shika-Cho trio had with the Sarutobi Clan; therefore, it made sense for their instructor to be a member of the Sarutobi Clan.
Suddenly, the door of the classroom was pushed open, and Sarutobi Asuma walked in. He waved at the newly graduated Genin sitting in the classroom and said, “Team 10, follow me.”
Nara Shikamaru, Yamanaka Ino, and Akimichi Chōji rose from their seats and followed Asuma.
Soon, the other instructors also began arriving at the classrooms to collect their teams. The Genin who graduated from Class A and Class B mostly have Jonin instructors, while others generally have Special Jonin or Chunin as their instructors. It all depends on the potential of the Genin team.
As the number of children in the classroom dwindled, the once noisy room grew quieter. Even Sasuke, as reserved as he was, felt a twinge of nervousness and excitement as he kept his eyes on the classroom door, hoping their instructor would be next.Next, Yuhi Kurenai appeared at the door and said, “Team 8, follow me.” Aburame Shino, Haruno Sakura, and Sai stood up and followed Kurenai.
As soon as Team Kurenai disappeared, Dan Shizune appeared at the classroom gate and said, “Team 9, follow me.” Inuzuka Kiba, Tenten, and Shin rose from their seats and followed Shizune.
And just as Team Shizune left, Uchiha Shisui appeared at the gate, saying, “Good afternoon, everyone.” Sasuke exclaimed, “Shisui-nii-san?” and thought to himself, ‘Could Shisui-nii-san be the instructor of Team 7?’
The other Genin in the classroom also exclaimed in surprise, “Shisui-sensei?” Unlike the other instructors who came and took their Genin Squads away, the children knew Shisui personally; after all, he had served as the vice principal at the academy for some time. Therefore, they were surprised to see him return to the academy once again.
Shisui nodded to everyone, saying, “I hope everyone is doing okay, and congratulations on becoming Genin.”
Everyone returned the greeting, then Sasuke quickly asked, “Shisui-nii-san, are you going to be a Squad Captain as well?” Considering that Shisui currently serves as the Captain of the Konoha Military Police Force, it’s a little strange for him to be responsible for a Genin Squad.
Shisui nodded, “Well, Hokage-sama wants me to lead a Genin squad. As for the work at the Police Force, Shinichi is handling all that stuff, so there’s nothing to worry about.” After that, he looked at three children in particular and said, “Team 6, please follow me.”
Several Genin blinked in surprise. They had assumed that Shisui would be leading Team 7, which consists of Uchiha Sasuke, Uzumaki Naruto, and Shimizu Mika. However, it turns out that he is leading Team 6, which consists of Hyuga Hinata, Shion-hime, and Kurama Yakumo.
The three kunoichi looked at each other in surprise, then got up and followed Uchiha Shisui.
Sasuke and Neji observed the three Kunoichis leaving the classroom and thought simultaneously, ‘Is it because Shion-hime graduated as the top trainee of the year?’
Uchiha Shisui is, after all, considered the strongest shinobi among the five great nations, and for him to lead a squad indicates it must have the highest potential. Considering that the squad he is leading consists of Hyuga Hinata, Shion-hime, and Kurama Yakumo, they could only attribute it to Shion graduating as the top trainee.
Sasuke gritted his teeth in frustration, ‘Damn it if only I hadn’t fallen for that trap… Shisui-nii-san would be the one leading Team 7…’ But there’s no use crying over spilled milk; he failed to graduate as the top trainee. It’s a pity even if Sasuke hadn’t fallen into that trap, Shisui still wouldn’t be the captain of Team 7.
Truth be told, Shisui being the captain of Team 7 actually makes the most sense. With his Mangekyō Sharingan, he can keep the Nine-tails in check, as the strongest Uchiha, he is the most suitable person to guide Sasuke in the use of Sharingan, and considering his mastery over Natural Energy and Senjutsu, he can help out Naruto and Mika… but still, he was made the captain of Team 6 instead of Team 7.
Of course, there are appropriate reasons for this as well.
First and foremost, Shisui is Kurama Yakumo’s Genjutsu master, so it makes sense for her to be in his Genin squad. Considering Shion’s importance, Kuroto wouldn’t be assured of leaving her in just a random team. He was initially planning to put her in the same team as Naruto and Sasuke, but since he changed that decision because of Yui’s request and put her along with Hinata and Yakumo, naturally, he would choose the next best shinobi in Konoha to lead their squad.
Sasuke was unaware of Kuroto’s reasons and felt that it was because of his inadequacy that Shisui was not the Captain of Team 7.
After the departure of Team 6, there were only two teams left in the classroom: Team 5 and Team 7. Just when they were wondering who their instructor would be, suddenly, Might Guy appeared at the gate and spoke in a loud voice, “Team 5, follow me.”
“Guy-Sensei!” Rock Lee was overjoyed and quickly followed after Might Guy.
“Uhhh…” Uchiha Kiyomi looked at Might Guy and Rock Lee strangely, then shook her head and turned to Neji.
Neji shrugged, saying, “It is what it is.”
The two sighed and followed after Guy and Lee.
As Team Guy disappeared, only Naruto, Sasuke, and Mika remained in the classroom. Growing bored, Naruto couldn’t help but wonder, “Sasuke, who do you think is going to be our instructor?”
“No idea…” mumbled Sasuke. It’s not that he was completely clueless; it’s just that he felt his guess was a little absurd. He then turned to the kunoichi in his team and questioned, “Mika, who was responsible for training us during those seven months?”
“I see… it seems both of us have reached the same conclusion, huh?” answered Mika with a thoughtful expression.
Naruto was confused. “What do you two mean?” He wasn’t bright enough to connect all the dots.
Mika explained to Naruto, “So far, most of the instructors seem to have a personal connection with a Genin of the squad they are leading. They were responsible for training at least one Genin from their squad during the past seven months.”
“Really?” thought Naruto as he tried to recall the teams and their instructors.
Sasuke nodded, “Going by this pattern, the instructor of our team must have some connection to us… You were trained by Hokage-sama, I was trained by Kakashi-Sensei… considering their position in the village, I don’t think either of the two of them would be our instructors… which means it has to be the one who trained Mika…”
“I see…” nodded Naruto as it made sense. Then he looked at Mika and asked, “Who taught you?”
Mika answered lightly, “It was my aunt…” but she didn’t think that her aunt would lead their squad. She is part of the Anbu Black Ops; it doesn’t make sense for her to lead their squad.
Just when everyone was wondering who the instructor of Team 7 would be, suddenly, a lazy voice came from the classroom door, “Team 7, follow me…”
The three members of Team 7 turned toward the door at the same time and noticed a silver-haired shinobi leaning on the doorframe while carrying a small book in his hand.
Sasuke was the most surprised, he couldn’t help but blurt out, “Kakashi-Sensei?” and hurriedly asked, “Are you going to be our instructor?”
Undoubtedly, it was Kakashi responsible for Team 7. He sighed tiredly and said, “Well, it’s Hokage-sama’s order. Can’t do much about it except follow it… Come on, hurry up…”
Considering the importance of Naruto as the Jinchuriki of the Nine-tails and the threat of Akatsuki, anyone other than Kakashi wouldn’t be fit to be the captain of the squad Naruto is in. Kakashi might not have a way to keep the Nine-tails in check, however, he has the Flying Raijin technique, which means he can retreat from any situation and keep Naruto safe. As for controlling the power of the Nine-tails? Hasn’t Kuroto already made sure that it won’t create trouble for Naruto or anyone in Team 7?
Uchiha Sasuke, Uzumaki Naruto, and Shimizu Mika hurriedly picked up their stuff and followed after the Hokage’s Hand.
