Upon hearing Ning Shu’s rebuke, Su Xiangqiu’s face darkened.
“You can’t just take all the good stuff for yourself,” she said coldly.
“How did I take all the good stuff? This shop is huge. You’re free to pick whatever you want.”
Marquis Xuanping’s household owned a jewelry store, and the shopkeeper had brought all the goods to their residence for them to choose from.
Ning Shu picked a pair of earrings, two hairpins, and a bracelet of good quality, then turned and walked away.
After that, she rarely left her courtyard and merely waited to be summoned to the palace selection.
Not long after the fifth prince ascended the throne, court officials submitted a memorial, claiming the inner palace was too empty and a consort selection needed to be held.
The fifth prince naturally agreed, and so began a grand selection process.
Early in the morning, several maids and older attendants fussed over Ning Shu. They scrubbed and groomed her repeatedly.
Before entering the palace, a girl would undergo a series of inspections. She’d be checked for virginity, body odor, and alignment of teeth, and so on.Ning Shu found the virginity check absolutely ridiculous.

Ning Shu and Su Xiangqiu were shoved into palanquin chairs and carried toward the imperial palace, one in front of the other. Many others were also making their way there.
There was a long line outside the palace gates.
After getting out of their respective palanquin, Ning Shu and Su Xiangqiu were led into the palace by eunuchs, where the physical inspection began.
Honestly, when the female servant stuck her finger in, Ning Shu was afraid she might tear something.
That part of the body was fragile. It could be lost just from running or jumping.
Being a virgin wasn’t about whether you had that bit of tissue or not.
If the inspecting woman was too rough… yikes.
Ning Shu’s mind wandered while she was being flipped and turned like livestock. Finally, she passed the exam.
To be fair, Su Zhuru had a decent face and figure.
After the inspection, Ning Shu stood off to the side in utter boredom. Her eyes were dull. She mentally asked 2333, “Does this palace world have world origins?”
She waited a long while before 2333 finally answered, “Nope.”
“Really?” Ning Shu pressed.
“Really. I swear on my system integrity,” 2333 said firmly.
“Then how do you find world origins?” she asked, curious about 2333’s method.
“System scan. I can scan a certain range. World origins have a pure energy signature. They’re easy to detect,” 2333 explained.
So there was no world origin here. If she’d known earlier, she would’ve just let herself get covered in acne and bowed out.
Ning Shu touched the sachet at her waist. If anything went wrong later, she could use it as an escape tool.
“Miss Su.”
Yin Qing walked over and bowed to Ning Shu in greeting.
Yin Qing had clearly dressed up. She looked stunning.
Ning Shu was surprised to see her there. Yin Qing was actually participating in the consort selection?
It was kind of ironic. Both of Zhuo Cheran’s women were now here for the selection, likely about to end up in bed with another man.
Ning Shu returned the greeting. “Miss Yin, you’re here for the selection as well?”
“My father forced me. As women, we can only obey the family’s will,” Yin Qing said. Her expression was melancholic.
She was now a far cry from the candid personality Ning Shu remembered when they first met.
This was an era where women were repressed, and men reveled.
Ning Shu replied, “I wish you success.”
After all, Yin Qing was the female lead of this world. However, the story had clearly changed. It was no longer about conquering the world and winning glory in battle.
Now it seemed it’d turned into… a palace intrigue drama?
