Chapter 839: The Legacy
Chapter 839: The Legacy
“Your legacy?”
Kent asked, his brow furrowed.
“Yes. My legacy.”
“Is it even possible for a human to become the sword Dao?”
“What are you talking about, Kent? I never asked for you to become me.”
“Then what do you mean by ’I was here to inherit your legacy’? From where I come from, inheriting someone’s legacy means taking their path and following in their footsteps, or aiming to become them one day.
I have no plans to become a Sword Dao, Mr. Sword Dao.
So why don’t you make your sentence more precise to wash away the confusion?”
“I understand your confusion. However, I indeed want you to inherit my legacy. However, I am not looking for you to become me in the future.
A Dao cannot be replaced.”
Kent nodded.
“Then what do I get from inheriting this legacy?”
“Something you have been chasing after from the day you touched the sword, the path beyond. You have been searching for that path for many years now, and while I don’t know what lies beyond, I have a way to get there.
It is something you crave, and it is what you will get if you inherit my legacy. If you want to rise to the peak and see the path beyond, then becoming the True Swordsman is the only way.”
’Interesting. Looks like there is a true swordsman. Meaning the ones out there and I are just nobodies in his eyes’ Kent thought inwardly, shaking his head.
“No need to put it that way. There are swordsmen out there with understanding so vast that calling them True Swordsmen is only deserving of them.
Trust me, long before you, many swordsmen rose and came close to reaching the peak. They earned my respect, but you were the only one who qualified to see me.
“As to why that was, I still don’t understand.”
Kent smirked, a smug expression plastering his face. Although the Sword Dao read his mind, he didn’t mind, for this wasn’t his first rodeo.
Hearing the Sword Dao’s confusion made him happy.
“Tell me more about this legacy, and if you are lucky, I will accept it.”
Kent laughed.
The sword Dao, wondering why Kent was the only person who managed to see him, was like a validation he had been waiting for for billions of years.
He couldn’t help feeling some pride.
“I know you already know what a Dao is, but to make matters simple, when we talk of the Dao, it is The Way.
I am the sword Dao, meaning I am the way of the sword.
This means to get an understanding of the sword, you must understand me. That starts from the moment you admire that sword hanging or the swing you couldn’t grow up fast enough to make.
Understanding me is complex yet simple.
Linear yet versatile.
There is no one way to understand me, and that is the main reason why there are many sword paths out there. Everyone’s understanding of me is unique and comprehensive.
However, there is one true path out there, one that has existed since the very beginning, and to truly understand it, you must first gain my approval, which you did, and then inherit it.
In simple terms, this path is merely a way for you to get to what is beyond this realm.
This legacy holds that, but whether you can reach it will depend on your abilities. I am the Dao; I cannot be impartial and cannot have favorites.
However, I recognize greatness, and you have earned my respect, so I offer the one true path to reach what is beyond.”
“Thanks for explaining. However, I have another question,” Kent thought for a moment, then he asked, “If you are the way of the sword, then shouldn’t you know what is beyond this stage?”
“It is more complicated than you think. So, for the sake of not looking too far ahead, why don’t we focus on the legacy?”
“I suppose that will be for the best. However, the next time we meet, I will ask again and keep asking until you provide an answer. Fooling me by telling me you dont know what is beyond is just too bland.”
The sword Dao just shook his head.
“The legacy has fourteen forms. You came here because you found the key to the first form. The first form is, as you called it, Rèn, meaning Edge.
The Edge represents the most fundamental principle of the sword: sharpness, decisiveness, and the power to sever. Without an edge, a sword is but a scrap of metal in one’s grip.
However, Rèn is the way to master the sword until it has reached the stage of absolute sharpness, decisiveness, and most importantly, Severing.”
“Before I continue, can you tell me what a sword is?”
“A sword is simply an edge sharp enough to cut through even metal.”
“That is correct, but not accurate. When we talk of a sword, it can be a scrap of metal, a mere branch on a tree, your limbs, and many more.
A sword, it’s just something you can wield, it can even be your heart, organs, and many more.
The foundations of this legacy seek to train not only the sword in your hand, but also your heart, mind, body, and soul.
All these aspects of you must be attuned with the sword. Once all that is done, you can then proceed to the next step.
It will come to you when you fully comprehend Edge.”
“Sounds like a lot of work.”
“Well, you are Lord Genesis, so anything is possible for you.”
“Thanks for that, and I accept, I will accept the legacy.” Kent wasn’t even done when a rune flew and merged with his forehead.
This made him smile, and he raised his index finger on his right hand.
“Thank you again. However, to walk your legacy, don’t you think you have to pay me? I mean, if I am not stretching it too thin, this is the second time you are talking to a living being, and this won’t be the last, so if you plan to keep talking to me, why don’t we come to some agreement?
I know aside from me, you haven’t talked to another mortal, so why don’t we keep this new friendship going?”
“Are you looking to extort from me?”
“No. Of course not. Why would I extort a whole Sword Dao? I am not that shameless.
I charge by the minute, and I have already spent an hour here.
So, how is it going for me, a few secrets on how to master ’Rèn (Edge)’ or perhaps, a way for me to easily form the foundation of two sword techniques?
Take your pick.”
The sword Dao looked at Kent’s smug face for a while before a sigh came from his lips.
“You know, in all the Daos there are, I am the strongest and the most complex, yet to think a mere mortal will use logic to extort something from me.”
Kent laughed, “There is a first time for everything, Senior Rèn, so this is your first time.”
“Very well. I chose the second option. I will demonstrate two sword techniques that haven’t been shown before in this universe. If it is your destiny to master them, then you will.”
“Bring it on.”
Kent focused, and in about an hour, he was pulled out of the Sword Dao realm with a smile on his face.
When he opened his eyes, the first message he saw made him widen his smile.
His aura surged, filled with sharpness, like the air was made of countless blades.
