On Astral Tides: From Humble Freelancer To Astral Emperor

Six Hundred And Eighteen

“You know, I think that everyone’s going to be quite angry with you.” Kiko laughed cheerfully. “We set this up to you could at least snatch a few hours of rest.” She patted my shoulder tenderly, though she seemed rather surprised she was being so hands-on. “You work too hard. We know why, but… it’s a bit upsetting to watch, sometimes.”

I placed my hand on hers, as we sat beside each other, watching the lightshow above, and the bustle of my Territory below. “Maybe so, but… I’d rather be busy now than out of time later. Of course…” I remarked, my tone dry and amused. “…don’t get me wrong, just sitting here relaxing with you now is great, and I hope in our future we have many lazy days just like this, or perhaps laughing in bed all day, just talking, joking and fooling around…”

Kiko’s face reddened at my boldness. It was true though, calling someone by a nickname definitely made it feel like we were closer, more intimate. She must have felt the same way, as she pursed her lips, looking away, up at the skies, for a moment, before then staring into my eyes. Her gaze was soft, her brown eyes shimmering with complicated yet happy emotions. “…I’d like that too, although… perhaps we’re not ready to fool around yet. Not that I’m overly concerned about staying pure until our marriage. It’s decided, isn’t it? It’s not like anything will change.”

“Exactly.” I agreed, certain of that. And I’m certain Ellie’s a done deal too. And I’m very much warming up to the prospect. Seeing that hidden, cute side of her as she’s complaining about the Queen wasting her date is endearing as hell. “I suppose it’s hard being an Imperial Princess though, keeping up appearances.”

“Not so hard as you’d think.” Kiko was smiling, our hands still touching. “I’ve never been one for the spotlight. Quite ironic, considering that Amaterasu’s Sun is so eye-catching. But what that means is there was no real need for me to make a big display of my relationship in public. That’s changed, of course…” She paused, an unusually intense grin on her lips. “…with the big announcement, I’m now very much the centre of attention. But when it comes to remaining chaste before marriage, not so much. Still…” Her grin softened, now rather self-deprecating. “…despite everything, I’m quite shy, you know? I’m not strangely bold, like Tsukiko. My heart isn’t ready for more, but… I’m sure when the moment is right…”

“Yeah, no rush.” I promised, leaning down and kissing her softly on the lips. Her mouth opened gently, and cautiously, carefully, I let my tongue slide between her soft, pink lips. Her eyes widened a little, but she didn’t resist, her own tongue gingerly creeping towards mine. They touched, her hesitancy stoking a fire within me, but I didn’t want to take advantage of her, so I merely softly probed at her, until her breath started coming faster. Her free arm snaked around my back, pulling us closer together, and I could feel the softness of her body. That, combined with the more fervent movements of her tongue, persuaded me to go further, and soon our tongues were twisting together, wet sounds filling the treetop café, though hopefully they were muffled from the other patrons by our elegant privacy screen.

Uh… huh… mmm…” As Yukiko finally pulled away, her lips damp, she made some rather undignified noises, before staring at me intently, face scarlet. Still, she seemed far from unhappy, the dazed, pleasure-filled light in her brown eyes indicating she’d enjoyed it. “That’s… I’m still not used to kissing.” she insisted. “it’s very… passionate. I can see why we Japanese hold it sacred.”

“Yeah, in other countries it’s not so intimate.” I agreed, holding Yukiko close, feeling the heat rising from her body. “But here it’s seen as more acceptable to be a little handsy than it is to kiss. Kissing is for serious lovers.”

“Oh, so you wish to touch me too, do you?” she blinked at me, and I realised she was trying to be flirtatious. Not wanting to push my luck with the shy Princess, I ran my hand over her back softly, and she shivered.

“Yeah, but… good things come to those who wait.” I chuckled, kissing her forehead softly this time.

“I don’t know whether to be relieved or annoyed.” Kiko breathed. “It does spark a little jealousy and worry within me. I… know I’m not as beautiful as everyone else. I sometimes think I’d just be pitied…”

“I’m not such a fool as to expect my words can soothe all your worries. I myself have been through the very same dread. Can I make everyone happy and do I deserve this, am I being selfish, so I understand your fears, at least a little.”

“How did you get over them?” Kiko asked, curious, and I shrugged, still hugging her gently, patting her back reassuringly.

“I don’t think we ever completely get over our fears and insecurities. Honest answer?” I asked, and she nodded.

“It’s through the hard work you reckon everyone’s going to be angry with me over.” I let out a rueful chuckle. “It’s a lot easier to just do something tangible. Even now, the crafting I’m doing… it’s utterly insane. Let me tell you, I don’t think I could replicate it myself from scratch, the materials are simply that rich in adherence. It’s more a case of… guiding what’s there, letting it manifest what powers the adherence believes the Crown Jewels should have. Of course, I’m sure they are pieces that belong to my Path now, and I’m putting my own hard work in to at least improve them a little…”

As Kiko hung on my words, I contemplated the best way to express what I wanted to convey. The Princess reminded me a bit, no, a lot, of myself. I’d always lacked confidence, until Shaeula had come into my life. Even when Lin brought me this opportunity, I’d always been thinking about gaining a little strength before it became too dangerous and I’d bow out, making my life better, but having no huge dreams. That all changed when first Shaeula showed me I could go further, faster, and then Eri overcame her own regrets and shyness to confess to me. Then Hinata boldly shattered my fragile defences, and from there… from there I had to accept it. Too much pride is poison, but false modesty is just as bad.

“Look, Yukiko…” I was back to calling her by name, and her eyes widened a little, perhaps wondering what that meant. “I’ve an idea. You don’t believe you’re beautiful, do you?”

“I’m not ugly, just… rather plain. The sort of woman who wouldn’t look out of place in a messy tracksuit, hair in a ponytail, working a dead-end job.” she admitted, and I raised one eyebrow at that.

“Don’t look down on tracksuits or ponytails. I’m a big fan of both on girls, especially with glasses.” I remembered Tan dressing up for me, a memory I’d surely never forget. “But I’m glad you’re being honest. So let me ask you a question. Don’t you think that’s changed? That you’ve grown far more beautiful?”

“It’s true, I suppose.” Kiko touched the skin of her face with her free hand. “It’s only natural. You make no secret of the effects of Charm and other relevant Statistics, and you’ve been working me hard on raising my Level where I can.”

“If you think it’s just numbers, you aren’t paying attention.” I disagreed. “You need to look in a mirror, Yukiko, really look. But… since there isn’t one here…” I pretended to search for one, glancing around quickly. “…I guess you’ll have to use my eyes as your mirror. Go on, take a good look at your reflection in my eyes.”

Kiko burst out laughing, and then after a moment bit her lip, stopping further chuckles from escaping. “Are… are you serious? That’s so cheesy, Akio!”

“Deadly!” I assured her, and after a moment she nodded slowly, though her shy expression revealed her embarrassment. Unblinking, she stared into my grey eyes, and she was close enough to clearly see the flecks of amber dancing within, the legacy of my special Skill.

The moment stretched on, Kiko’s cheeks going from pink to red as her shame spiked, but she didn’t look away. Nor did I, and I realised Kiko’s brown eyes actually had more in common with mine than I imagined, the brown wasn’t uniform, but as her gaze flickered, I could see golden tinges within, like the verdant light of the sun.

“I… do I really appear that way to you?” Kiko asked finally. “There’s no hesitation, just fondness… and… desire.”

“You do.” I promised. “My Eyes only reflect the truth. After all, I’m a Faeduine now, I hate liars. But I get it. Even now you won’t believe me. You’re striking, Yukiko, and it’s not just down to your stats. It’s your heart. Your care for Tsukiko, your kindness… they shine. But I’m not talking some inner beauty bullshit, you’re plenty pretty on the outside too. I’m not going to say it’s easy. Tsukiko, Shiro, Tan… Rose and Lin if you could see them… they’ve reached the point beyond perfection. I know comparing must be painful.” I let out a rusty chuckle. “But that doesn’t mean you’re not gorgeous. I’ve been told by my sis, though I should probably take her advice with a pinch of salt, or maybe a whole damn shaker of it, considering her lack of experience, but she is a girl, so I suppose her insight is valuable… anyway, she tells me that confidence is the best charm a man can have. And while I admit I’ve a weakness when it comes to wanting to protect women, I’m also utterly delighted and proud when I see you standing tall, making the best of the hand fate dealt you. To me that’s beautiful.” I kissed her lips softly again, savouring her flavour. “And you’ll only grow more beautiful. Sure, maybe you’ve had to work at it more than Eri or Kana, but… it’s not how you got there, or how you feel about your past self, it’s the now, and the future, which count. And I’m not Tsukiko, but I can tell you, it’s Definite…” I smirked teasingly at my quip. “…that your future will be bright, and you’ll grow ever more charming to me.”

“You think so?” Kiko said after a long pause for thought, and I assured her it was so.

“I know so. But… I also know that while words from those we love help a lot, they don’t fix everything, just as despite everything, I still go through occasional bouts of self-loathing and self-pity over my enviable circumstances, hence my workaholic nature.” As she tittered nervously at that, I made a suggestion.

“So how about we struggle to accept the truth together, that we’re not what we fear, that we deserve this? I’ve got a suggestion… I’ll seal away your nickname for now, Yukiko. And not because I don’t feel close to you. We met as friends, and so I like you for you, understand?” At her shy nod, I pressed on. “No, I’ll save it for the intimate moments, when we’re curled up together, understanding each other’s frailties and hangups. So that you’ll know I’m thinking of the real you, the you I see reflected in my eyes.”

Yukiko was silent for a long time. It stretched on uncomfortably, before she finally released an explosive breath, a smile finally back on her face. “That’s… oh Amaterasu and all the Gods and Goddesses of this land…” She covered her eyes with her free hand, as if too mortified to look at me. “When I saw messages about your dates, I thought they were exaggerating. But no… you certainly know how to be romantic. My heart’s beating so hard it might leap out of my chest.”

“Can I check?” I asked cheekily, and her blush was volcanic.

No! My heart isn’t prepared!” She gently smacked away my slowly questing hand. “But…” She took control of her raging emotions. “…you make my fears seem silly. I like that. I’m not… trying to compete. Oh, I suppose that’s a lie… what I mean is, I don’t need to be the prettiest, the one you find the most beautiful, but… I couldn’t bear to be the one you find the least desirable.”

“Don’t worry, I desire you plenty.” I flexed my fingers teasingly, and she swatted my hand again. “So, Yukiko… how about it, want to work on our insecurities together?”

“I surrender. You are so pushy. I pity poor Eleanor!” She then nodded. “Don’t worry, Akio. I’ll… soon have you calling me Kiko again, with affection. Just… even if I wanted to here, we promised. And you are already in enough trouble!” she suddenly grimaced. “Don’t think all this sweet talk about me is going to get you off the hook. Eri’s going to be particularly angry! I’m not helping you deal with her!”

“Yeah.” I winced. Eri was occasionally exchanging thoughts with me about her time spent with the others, having fun, though that was winding down, everyone wanting at least a couple of hours of sleep to leave themselves fully refreshed for Christmas Day and the family gathering. “But it can’t be helped. And don’t feel sorry for Ellie, she’s the one being pushy with me!”

“I’ll believe you this once. But…” Yukiko insisted, snuggling close to me, breath hot on my neck and cheek. I’ll be calling her Kiko soon enough. She’s like the old me, she just needs to gather her confidence and take a leap of faith, or better yet, receive a helping push from someone close to her… “…tomorrow, no crafting, no training, no exerting yourself!  I know you have to drop of some gifts in the morning, do a presentation ceremony for Adamant and for Fenrir, but other than that, you’re going to relax and enjoy Christmas, and at least have one whole day to recharge yourself, calm down! And none of us will back down on that.”

At her firm expression, which brooked no refusal, I nodded. “Yeah, I’m just going to enjoy the chaos, I promise. And I’ll let you all pamper me. I’m a lucky bastard, so many girls eager to attend to my every need.”

Yukiko gave me a flat look, before chuckling. “You make it sound like you’re a wastrel, exploiting us. Honestly, I expect you will be utterly spoiled. There’s a great deal of in-laws to make good impressions with, and your parents most of all. But, that aside… I’m still waiting on the romantic surprise you promised me. We got rather distracted with talk of you needing to extend your London date.”

“We did, and that’s not fair to you. I’ll make it up to you though… Kiko…”

“Don’t suddenly call me that!” she shivered. “Now when I hear it, I think of intimacy, and just what that’ll entail… I’m still shy, you know!” She puffed out her cheeks, rather resembling Ellie in that moment. My darling pair of shy Princesses. Shaeula and Shiro are two-of-a-kind as well, playful and bold… makes me wonder what the Princess of Asura and Princess of Hell are like… we really need to step up our searches for them…

“Sorry, I couldn’t resist, as you’re cute.” I kissed her lips again, while I let out a small flare of aether behind the privacy screen, notifying those outside we were ready. Yukiko let our tongues entwine, her kiss a little less shy, but it was still clumsy and arousing. As we parted, Yukiko suddenly gasped, scuttling away from me a little, eyes wide.

“When did they come in?” she asked, as a half dozen weaselkin musicians had appeared, followed by two more carrying a large silver tray covered by a dome-like cloche, and one last ratkin maid, Ixitt’s daughter Quaela, who was holding a large bottle of sparkling wine, some of the first trial products made from grapes from the Spring’s orchards. I don’t get how they make the wine so quickly, but no doubt the Mortal Engineers tasked with our ever-increasing alcohol production could explain the tricks used to age it rapidly without ruining the flavours…

“Just now.” The string quartet, as well as two weaselkin with flute-like instruments, set themselves up in one corner, briefly running through their practice, sonorous notes filling the air, while the others placed down the large tray, removing the lid, revealing two plates of expertly prepared seafood, dredged up from the seas around Sagami Bay. Hot, fragrant steam rose straight up, due to the absence of any breeze here in the Boundary, one thing which made the Treetop terrace café viable, and Quaela came over, opening the bottle expertly and pouring us both a glass.

“Working tonight, I see.” I spoke to her, and she nodded.

“Yeah, though I’m not on shift tomorrow. Dad’s… got some strange idea in his head about copying your celebration so the whole family is getting together. But… it’s not as big as yours.”

Yukiko agreed. “Yes, I’m… still rather shocked at the scale. Perhaps we should have borrowed the Imperial Palace for more space, but if we did that… I don’t really want to see my brother right now. Anyway, thank you for your service.” She nodded to the maids, who all demurred, insisting they didn’t need praise for just doing their jobs.

“No, you accept thanks when it’s offered. After all, jobs are important.” I passed them a handful of the coins used as currency for luxuries in our Territory, and Quaela had no issues accepting, having her father’s boldness. The maids were paid well, Shaeula saw to that now, but I considered it a little Christmas bonus.

“I won’t be shy then. Though dad’s always bringing home everything interesting around here. Oh, don’t mind me… I’ll remain and attend to your needs.” Quaela promised, looking oddly fetching in her maid outfit, despite being a furry ratkin. Nope, still not a furry, but… maybe maid outfits can make any girl look cute?

“How about a toast then?” I suggested to Yukiko as the musicians warmed up.

“Fine.” She picked up her glass, looking down at the food. Since it was a midnight snack and tomorrow would be a day of hearty eating and drinking, the seafood selection wasn’t large, but instead a variety of perfectly prepared finger foods, accompanied by numerous dips and sauces. Despite that, it was still an immaculate selection and showed how fast our chefs were improving. The progress at turning the Boundary into a prosperous and pleasant place to live and visit is going well…

“To us. A pair of idiots. May your need to work yourself to the bone be sated…”

“To us. A charming pair of idiots. May you finally realise you’re a cute and adorable woman…”

We clinked our glasses, and Yukiko took a sip first. “Yeah, not bad. It’s got a little citrus hit to it, and some herbal notes…

I took a swig myself and nodded. “Yeah, it’s good. Anyway…” I gestured to the food. “Dig in. I need the energy anyway…”

Yukiko picked up various bits of fish and paired them with fresh fruits and vegetables, some of which looked as though Asha and Hyacinth had grown them, expertly moving her chopsticks, ferrying the delicacies to various sauces, before nibbling on it, an expression of pleasure on her face due to the fresh and refined flavour. “This is good too. I suppose I can give your efforts full marks.”

I also snacked on the sushi, chopsticks dancing. Strong chilli flavours gave the fish an additional bite, and it was quite different to the fare that would be served tomorrow. That reminds me… it’s going to be a very interesting culture clash…

“I’m just showing how much I appreciate you.” I insisted modestly. “Anyway, I saw a concert with Hinata, but she was more there to check out the stores around the Spring. But I thought… a more intimate dining experience with you would work better. After all, I’m sure you’re sick of pomp and circumstance.”

“A little, yes.” she agreed. “It’s very tiresome. As you’ll no doubt find out.”

“I wish. Every time I go to some sort of ball or party, something annoying happens. Though I suppose one plus is Ellie is really self-conscious about her behaviour when we first met, so I have fun teasing her.”

“You can be a bit of a bully too, can’t you?” Yukiko mused, smiling gently. “Though I think Eleanor is a woman that needs to be challenged, to crack her stony façade.”

“That’s what I think too. Besides, she’s cute when she’s embarrassed. As are you.”

“Flatterer.” We continued to banter, Quaela watching on silently, filling our glasses when they were empty, and then finally the musicians were ready. The lead, a weaselkin woman with reddish fur, cleared her throat, and with her hands on the bow and body of what looked like a violin, though the shape was somewhat different, she began to play, the sounds of flutes and other stringed instruments joining in. Then she began to sing, and she was joined by two of the others, and the three voices harmonised beautifully into a song where the words were English, just… older, more archaic.

“Beautiful.” Yukiko breathed, impressed.

“Yes, you are, Kiko.” I caught her off guard again, enjoying her surprise. “The moon is beautiful tonight.”

“There’s no moon here, we’re not in the Fae lands.” she managed to retort when her heart stopped pounding. “At least do that when the moon is out!”

“It’s sometimes hard to see the moon when the Sun is beside me, shining brightly.” I continued to enjoy getting a reaction out of her, and she simply turned away, listening to the music, but she moved her leg closer to mine, our thighs touching, showing simple companionship.

For a while we listened, song after song transporting us to a distant time, where the Fae roamed, and things were different. Then the music shifted, and they started playing more modern, human-style music. We had eaten our meal, the plates cleaned away, and the sparkling wine was mostly gone. Then, I widened my eyes and called to Quaela quickly.

“Sorry to be a pain, but… I need more supplies brought up urgently. Can you handle it?” I rattled off the list, and Quaela turned and dashed away, her tail waving frantically, popping out from below her dress.

“Trouble?” Yukiko asked, a smile on her face.

“Technically it’s a breakthrough. I think I’m going to gain some Skill-ups over this…”

“If you think that’ll stop Eri from chastising you, you’re very wrong.”  She chuckled merrily.

“I’m afraid you’re right.” I agreed. I gestured for the musicians to keep playing, and a cheerful tune was struck up, upbeat and jovial, the strings jaunty. That fit perfectly with poor Quaela, as she rushed up the stairs accompanied by the maids from earlier, laden with supplies. I quickly bathed them in aether and popped them into my Bracelet, so I could access them for my crafting on the Material.

“Take a break.” I told them, and the maids slumped down, panting. I called upon a little elemental water, and they carefully accepted it, as I filled up our used glasses.

“Never a dull moment. I… like that.” Yukiko agreed with a smile. She grasped my hand, her body still resting against mine as the musicians played on. “Is it because there’s always something new, something unexpected, that my heart races so? Or is it…”

“I think you know what it is.” I kissed her cheek, and she nodded, enjoying the moment, but as the song finished, she couldn’t help but ask.

“So, how is it going? I’m flattered you can spare me your attention when you are doing such painstaking crafting. If you mess up and destroy the Crown Jewels, you’ll go down in infamy.”

“Way to pile on the pressure.” I responded, faking annoyance. “No, I think I can do it, bring out the properties of all the adherence tied to such treasures. But here and now… I’m sitting with a treasure, so why wouldn’t I give you my full attention?”

“Flatterer!” she repeated her earlier compliment with a chuckle, before letting out a sigh. “However, by my best guess, my date is coming to a close. So… it’s time for you to face the music.” We watched one final song, before Yukiko departed for the Material. Shortly afterwards, Eri’s thoughts echoed in my mind, her tone exasperated.

You want more time? Don’t you know how fine you’re cutting things anyway? Oh, I don’t know why I bother, this was inevitable, the schedule is too tight. You made your bed, you’ll have to lie in it now, as mother-in-law Emily says. Just be warned, tomorrow you’re doing nothing but relaxing and having fun with us, all right? And we’ll force you to have an embarrassing lap-pillow sleep in front of everyone! Though how we’ll decide on whose lap, we can’t draw straws or Shaeula’s Fortune will just make her win…

Thanks, Eri. And apologise to everyone else for me will you? Since I know it’s not fair, giving Ellie more time, but… I ended up dragged into something different…

I know, Yukiko said it was crafting the Crown Jewels. I suppose it’s a story to tell around the table, isn’t it? Just… don’t push yourself too far, okay?

Don’t worry, I won’t. And I’ve got a load of Skills that have Ranked up to show for it!

As if that makes us less worried for your health. But… I suppose I’d feel bad for Eleanor if her date was just watching you mess with some treasures. The others think so too, so… show her a good time, okay?

I will do. And thanks again for your understanding.

Oh, we understand you extremely well. Anyway, we’re all heading back now anyway, so we’ll see you in a few hours, bright and early. This is the first Christmas I’ll be spending with you in our new home, so I want it to be special.

Oh it will be. Oh it most certainly will be.

After another few instant exchanges of thoughts, I was left alone, pondering the situation, when Yukiko returned, climbing the stairs below us. Once she reached the top and brushed past our privacy curtain, she gave me a winsome smile, enjoying my confusion.

“I know my date’s over, but since I was here anyway, I asked nicely if I could have an extra hour or two.” She sat down beside me again, taking my hand. “Nobody really minded, and just said I’d owe them a favour, so… how about an encore?” She winked playfully, and I grinned.

“Sure, why not?”

Meanwhile, back in London, I was applying Chirurgery to a rather bemused Melissa. She had resisted at first, unwilling to accept charity from me, since we had very differing opinions of my lifestyle and relationships with the opposite sex, but I had pointed out we were going to be family, and that her fiancé Henry had already received it, and that surely he’d like it when her health and beauty improved, to which my rather amusing, if not terribly perceptive, brother-in-law had agreed wholeheartedly, pleading with ‘Mel’, as he called her, to get it done, as if it was some sort of cosmetic surgery.

She’d still hesitated, perhaps after watching the rather painful experience Princess Diana and Prince Charles had been through moments prior, but Ellie had finally lost patience, ordering her to hurry up, as she was wasting her hard-won date. Unable to resist the intensity of a clearly frustrated Ellie, nor the fierce look in her sapphire blue eyes, Mellisa had relented, and that led to this. She was moaning and shivering under the pain, but bore it well, and soon I was done, Henry wiping her tears, sweat (and a little snot we pretended not to notice) away.

“All right then…” I explained one final time. “No matter how tempting it might seem, do not enter the Boundary unaccompanied, even here in the Palace. It may seem safe, being Ellie’s Territory, but we’ve seen accidents can happen. And if you enter anywhere else, there’s a high risk of injury or death.”

“They know. Enough with the lectures. I’ll take charge of them later!” Ellie was impatient, grabbing my hand. “I want to get going! I steeled my heart for this, and I’ll be bloody damned if I don’t get to have some fun!”

“It seems…” the Queen was still admiring the modified Crown Jewels in awe. “My dear granddaughter has reached her limit. It wouldn’t do to push her any further.” She then smiled radiantly at me, though there was definitely a cheeky edge to her grin. “And she’ll definitely regret it if you are put off by her tantrums.”

“Grandmother!” Ellie gasped, shocked. “I’m not having a tantrum, I’m simply eager to get going.”

“Fine. I shall leave it at that then. So, what’s the final plan?” she asked, and I explained.

“I’ll bring Ellie back after our date, then a few hours later I’ll come by and take her and Princess Diana to the Ring Gate. Then we’ll get them both shifted over for the festivities. I’ll bring them back later. Due to the time zone differences you might get to spend some time with them still, if they aren’t too tired.”

“I see. In that case, do have fun, you two lovebirds.” the Queen chuckled.

“Finally. Let’s go.” Ellie pulled on my arm, but I was shocked to be stopped by Melissa. She seemed unsure, but finally opened her mouth to speak.

“Merry Christmas. Since I won’t see you tomorrow. But… when you’re all in England for New Year’s Honours…” she paused again, before swallowing her pride. “…I’ll invite Eleanor out, and… and all the others, for a meal, get to know them better. I at least owe you, and them… that, I suppose. I don’t approve of your lifestyle, but… I do know that it seems you care about them, in your own selfish way.”

“I do. And I’d thank you properly for your forbearance, but… Ellie’s going to pull my arm off if I don’t get moving. And growing it back is a bit of a nuisance. I lose arms too often, must be a Tyr thing…”

There was laughter at that, but Ellie wasn’t messing around, so I said my final words. “So, happy Christmas to you, Melissa, and to all of you. Though I might see you in a few hours.”

And with that, Ellie whisked me out, and soon we were slipping out of the Palace grounds, our breaths misting in the cold British winter air. “Thank God for that. I thought grandmother would never let us go.” Ellie grumbled. There were tourists and London revellers around the Palace, enjoying the lights around the historic building, but since it was dark, we slipped past them effortlessly, onto the Mall, and we quickly turned onto St James’s Street, heading for the suggested display of Christmas lights.

Hand in hand, I once more took in Ellie, charming in her tight jeans and lacy shirt, and tall for a girl, only a little shorter than me, and squeezed her hand. Her cheeks tinged red, and she glanced at me in surprise, and I happily planted a kiss on her cheek, making her blush harder.

“What was that for?” she asked, eyes wide, and I grinned.

“Just felt like it. Because I’m happy. Who wouldn’t be? A Christmas Eve date in London, with a beautiful, charming woman.”

“Don’t you mean dour, prickly and judgemental?” she groused, though I could tell she enjoyed my compliment. “I just… I should be endlessly grateful, you know?” As we walked, something drifted down and hit me, slightly cold, and I realised a few small flakes of snow were falling, adding a perfect ambience to the scene. “You put in a great deal of effort to create such wonders for grandmother, for Britain. Although…” Her sudden smile, rather handsome and charming, drew my eyes. “…you have helped yourself to those treasures in the Tower, and I owe you a number more still. That aside, I honestly don’t think Britain can repay you for all you’ve done for us. I don’t think I can either. But… oh, I wish I had the gift of the gab like my idiot brother Henry, or grandmother, but all I can do is be blunt… I don’t want our future to be about repayment. That’s not what I always wanted out of life.”

I draped my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. She blinked, but didn’t resist, and as we came close to Regent Street, the twinkling festive lights and music playing was definitely evoking a romantic atmosphere. The number of people around had grown massively, the streets crowded, and while Londoners had a notorious reputation for being brusque and minding their own business, being lost in their own little worlds, it was surely impossible for us not to be recognised.

“So, what do you want out of our relationship?” I asked. “Oh, and shouldn’t you be worried we’ll be seen together? I know we’re technically engaged, but the official announcement hasn’t been made yet, has it?”

“No, grandmother wants to do it after New Year’s Honours. She’s got a few surprises in store. You too can suffer from her whims like I do. Look forward to it.” She chuckled dryly. “But that aside, I’m not ashamed to be seen walking with you, and if rumours start… is it really a rumour if it’s true?” She shrugged. “You know, Melissa’s not so bad, really. She just has very strong beliefs on women’s empowerment, that sort of thing. I sympathise. Mother is the same, she’s campaigned against all sorts of social ills in the past, such as forced child marriages in some other countries. They want women to be independent, strong, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But sometimes…” We reached Regent Street and were immediately bathed in light, it being almost as bright as the day now we were close.

Very impressive… overhead, slung between two picturesque, old-fashioned brick buildings was a massive, illuminated Angel, towering over the streets from above. Many more lined the mile-long road, and strings of brilliant bulbs along the walls of the shops and other establishments were shining in a variety of blues, silvers and whites.

“…sometimes it’s not so bad to be seen as weaker, cherished. Look, I’m a Princess, some might say the Princess, as the British monarchy is seen as the gold standard worldwide for royalty, though that’s quite unfair to Yukiko. It still seems strange me using her actual name, rather than calling her Mikasa. Well, every country has their customs…”

We had attracted some notice now, a muted buzz of conversation hidden below the music playing in the streets, and soon phone cameras were pointed at us, taking pictures and video, but we paid them no mind. The snow was beginning to fall a little heavier, the dark skies above now reflecting the lights of London, giving the sky a silvery cast that reminded me of the Boundary, and on spotting a stall selling what I wanted, I led Ellie over. In fact, it’s fortunate that there’s another street vendor right here too… a double win.

“…and it’s not for me to judge.” Ellie continued solemnly. “Though judge I do. I’m sorry, I can be quite the self-centred woman. But… arrangements persist here. Mother and father were hurriedly pushed together, and it wasn’t harmonious, not for many years. But grandmother and our parents insisted we’d get to make our own choices. Though the advent of all this mess changed things… wait, what are you doing?” Ellie seemed puzzled as I quickly bought a long woolly coat and a scarf from one vendor, before draping the coat over her shoulders, and wrapping the scarf around her neck, before also tangling it around mine, keeping us close. I then went to the vendor next door, who unlike the first, who didn’t seem to recognise us, was staring at us with wide-eyed, trembling awe.

“Don’t be alarmed, we’re incognito.” I said in my impeccable English, touching my free finger to my lips in a gesture of silence. “That warm mulled wine looks awesome. I’ve got to keep her free hand warm, right?”

“Yeah… uh… yeah, sorry. Two mulled wines coming up!” He recovered, passing one to Ellie with trembling hands, and she took it in her free hand. “It’s… an honour to be patronised by you, Princess… and you, uh, Sir Hero…” He passed me mine after I’d paid.

“Oh, I’m just Eleanor today, pay me no mind. Having a Christmas Eve stroll with… with my sweetheart.” Her face was as red as her wine, and that provoked a further shocked reaction. “Anyway, Hapy Christmas, good sir, and may your wine sell well.”

With that we walked back into the crowd, and she murmured “It’s warm.”

“I hope so. It’s starting to snow, and while we don’t fear the cold anymore… you said it yourself. Sometimes it’s good to be spoiled.”

“Yes.” She lifted the wine to her lips and took a sip. “I think so. I sometimes wonder if I deserve it, you know? I know that those I killed were traitors, that… that Sarah, locked away over Christmas in some barren prison, betrayed me, betrayed Britain, but… my hands still shake sometimes.” She tried to laugh it off, making a quip. “Despite claiming to be busy, and with no shortage of female admirers, I dare say David will visit her tomorrow. Poor fool. But it makes me think that love isn’t so simple…”

“It isn’t. But it is powerful.” I promised. “Don’t worry. I won’t ever betray you.” My voice was quiet by her ear, and our hands, entwined together like lovers, each other’s heat keeping us warm, the flakes of snow melting on contact, tightened, our grips firm, as if never wishing to let go.

“I know. I know. I’m a boring woman too, you understand? Security and honesty are more valuable to me than fiery passion. But… passion is important. I don’t want a loveless marriage, or to spend years making it work, like mother and father. I want it from the start. Oh, this isn’t bad.” She took another sip of her warming, spiced wine. “You’re quite the gentleman. I know the Japanese are said to be polite, but… aren’t you also supposed to be bad with women?”

“The stereotype isn’t terribly untrue.” We were attracting attention, and surprisingly, the busy London crowd along Regent Street was parting for us, allowing us through unimpeded, though hundreds of people were filming us now. Seeing that, Ellie showed off, holding her mug of hot wine in place with aether, waving regally with her now-free hand. Seeing me looking, she winked, her blue eyes sparkling.

“I wanted to show the fruits of my labour. Anyway, you were saying?” She retrieved her wine, revelling in the awed mutterings of the watching crowd.

“I was saying it’s true. We Japanese are a reserved people, so we find dating a bit hard. Fortunately, my mom, as you will soon find out… apologies in advance, by the way… is extremely friendly and forthright, and me and my sis picked up a bit of that. I was still terribly shy though. But… just as you’ve changed, oh Green Knight, so have I.”

“Ah, you’d be Tyr, yes? And you even lost the hand saving me.” She chuckled, sounding as if she was having a very good time. Even the thickening snow couldn’t deter her, she just flicked up the collar of the coat I’d bought her with aether to shield her neck. “It’s not like I can talk big, is it? David’s always laughing at my naivety. But… at least everyone likes you. David thinks he’s a wise older brother-type though. But Sir Arthur, he just wants me to be happy. And of course, Aditi and Mary-Jane respect you… and Cassie looks up to you a lot. Though I think she’s more in awe of Shaeula, honestly.”

“I can’t say I blame her.” I chuckled, as we turned off onto Carnaby Street. We were being followed, and a buzz was moving through the streets of the capital, but we paid them no mind, lost in our own conversation, our cheeks nearly touching due to the scarf. “These are very impressive.” As opposed to the more muted colours of Regent Street, whites, blues and so on, the lights here were a riot of red, pink, purple, green and more, actually reminding me of the streets of Tokyo at night. Lit up sculptures and massive cubic bars of overhead bulbs gave the street a festive atmosphere, further enhanced by the attention we were drawing and the fuss that created.

“But I’m glad. After all, it’d be horrible if your parents didn’t like me, and worse if your team didn’t. After all, we’ll be in life-or-death situations together in the future. But… it’d be utterly the worst if you didn’t like me.”

That froze her, and I could see the blush working its way across her face and down her neck. Swallowing, glancing around, she made up her mind and leaned in, kissing me gently on the lips. The crowd went wild, and unlike in Japan, where there’d have been loud sounds of camera shutters, due to the anti-peeping laws mandating all phones had them on and unable to be turned off, here we were being filmed silently. Though calling it silent when the crowd is so boisterous is a bit…

“How bold.” I chuckled, licking my lips as we parted, further deepening her blush. “Trying to steal the Queen’s thunder?”

“I think after today, with what you’ve done to the Principal Coronation Regalia, you can steal whatever you want and she’ll think it a bargain. So will I. It means a lot to me, even if it was frustrating, using up my time. But…” She kissed me again, and this time her mouth opened and our tongues entwined. She was like Yukiko, a rather clumsy, unpractised kisser, but she was enthusiastic, and a quick learner. The crowd was cheering and clapping, and I even heard one vender start giving away free drinks to celebrate ‘The Princess and the Hero!’.

“That… was bold of me, wasn’t it?” she breathed as we pulled apart. “But I’m no longer an old spinster. And the damn tabloids can stop speculating about my love life. If nothing else, that’ll be a bloody blessing. It tasted strange though, sour. Makes my chest clench.”

“I’ve heard it said it tastes sour when you’re truly into someone.” I parroted some Japanese wisdom I’d heard.

“Oh, so… yours must have tasted like a particularly sharp lemon then?” she asked, and I gave her my answer with another kiss and a tight hug. When we finished, her blue eyes moist, her knees shaking a little bit, and her breath coming fast, she leaned against my shoulder.

“You’re rapacious. I can see grandmother will have to rush the wedding.” She chuckled weakly, but her eyes were sparkling. “Even in these trying, unprecedented times, you have a way of making me feel like the world is ordinary. Even when I argued with you at the gala over such petty matters, it was… a welcome distraction from weightier obligations. But now… with such powerful treasures, Grandmother can surely safeguard Britain effectively.”

“You could too… it just has to be from the bloodline.” I pointed out, as we kept walking and sightseeing. One young girl, perhaps in her early teens, shyly came up to us, holding a bunch of pretty white flowers, and Ellie bent down, looking her in the eye, politely taking them. We chatted to the starstruck girl for a while, before her parents sheepishly came and collected her, but with a smile, Ellie waved her smartphone using aether, triggering the Bluetooth exchange, and a photo of Ellie and me together was sent to the girl, who blinked at it in surprise.

“Our secret, okay?” Ellie winked, once more proving she was good with children. “It’s not a photo released to the public, so it’s just for you. Now, don’t tell anyone until we’re gone, all right? Otherwise Akio and I can’t enjoy our date in peace.”

“I understand. You’re so beautiful, Princess, and so brave! Can I be like you when I grow up?”

“Oh, you can be.” Ellie patted her head, making the girl squirm happily. “If you’ve got guts you can do anything you set your mind to.”

After that sage advice, her parents dragged the girl off, apologising profusely, and Ellie paused, frowning. “What’s that look for?”

“Oh, just thinking that you’re definitely cute.” I chuckled, once more enjoying her exaggerated reaction. “So, was this worth the wait?”

“Absolutely.” Ellie agreed. “I’m carefree, though… tomorrow makes me nervous in other ways.”

“You and me both. But at least it’ll be happy chaos.” I promised. “Anyway, as I was saying before that girl stopped us…” I was holding the flowers for Ellie now, like a gentleman. “…you could certainly use the Crown Jewels too.”

“Are you insane?” Ellie shook her head, and the melting snow that was dusting her dark hair scattered. “Wear St Edwards Crown to battle? What if it was damaged, or worse still, broken? I’m sweating just thinking about it.” She bit her lip anxiously. “You can’t say that doesn’t happen, can you?”

“No, you’re right.” I agreed, thinking of all the weapons I’d wrecked, the armour that had been destroyed. “But even as precious as they are, lives are more important. But it’s a luxurious choice to have, isn’t it?”

“Oh, absolutely.” Ellie agreed, as we strolled through Carnaby Street and then turned back towards the Thames, where the streets were less packed. Obviously the crowd was still following us, and no doubt due to people posting on social media it was thickening. With a sly smile, I offered a suggestion.

“So, shall we leave the crowd behind? I’m feeling a bit self-conscious.”

“I wouldn’t mind, but…” Ellie began, and at her word, I scooped her up into a princess carry. She let out a rather undignified squeal, and then we were airborne, as I leapt high into the sky. My reserves of elemental energies were barely recovering, after the vast drain I’d experienced forging the Queen’s Crown Jewels, but I could still manage a few tricks with the wind element that had started regenerating. Copying some of Shaeula’s moves, I stepped off the solidifying air, emerald sparks scattering, and after a few such jumps, we’d crossed several streets away, and while we made quite the commotion landing, at least the crowd had thinned.

“How was it?” I asked cheekily, letting her down, and she brushed at her coat and jeans in silence, before smiling faintly.

“Quite the experience. I can move quickly in battle myself, but I can’t do that.

“It shouldn’t be hard for you to learn, you’re blessed in terms of the ability to brute force elements.”

“Oh, so you want me to suffer?” she grimaced, and I shook my head.

Want is a strong word, but suffering now for safety and happiness later… don’t worry, I’ll hold your hand, hug you and kiss you until you’re all better. But… you really should maximise Ether Healing too. It’ll synergise with your favour from the Green Man. Maybe you can do both at once?”

“How… thrilling… a prospect.” Her tone was dry. “But I suppose I must look forward to such a joyous struggle in the future. I’m not going to be left behind. Britain isn’t going to be. Fortunately… grandmother can likely hold off a London-style invasion by herself now.”

“Don’t be too reliant on the treasures. Firstly, eventually the adherence will be used up, and secondly, no matter how strong the gear, if the one wielding them makes a mistake or is blindsided, then there’s no victory to be had. But… this is too gloomy a topic for our date, isn’t it? Shall we press on?”

“Yes, I suppose so.” Ellie agreed. Over the river, the London Eye, the towering Ferris wheel, was lit up, and with our keen eyesight, we could see the passengers within, often couples. Seeing that, Ellie pouted. “We should have done something like that. A little privacy, but still a breathtaking view.”

“Oh, I don’t think that’s impossible. Not that, but…” I grinned, pointing to the Shard, that towering glass skyscraper, a bit under a mile away. “…as it so happens, I made us a reservation. Fancy it?”

Ellie’s eyes sparkled with anticipation. “Perfect. Yes, I most certainly do.” We hurried over and soon were travelling up in the lift. We then stepped out onto the seventy-second floor, which was completely devoid of people, except for one member of staff, who was waiting or us with a magnum of champagne.

“I’m sorry for our lateness.” I apologised, and the impeccably mannered man shrugged.

“Not at all, sir. It’s an honour to see Princess Eleanor and Akio Oshiro here. Besides, the fees paid are very generous. We have no complaints. Now, I’ll leave you to each other’s company.”

“You… rented out this whole platform?” she asked, shocked, and I grinned.

“Sure did. The old me is screaming about the cost, I’d barely have been able to afford our entry, never mind blocking it out for hours. But… I wasn’t kidding when I said we’d be rich soon. And this is special, isn’t it? Our first proper date. I wanted you to remember it, always.”

“Oh, no fear of me forgetting.” Ellie grabbed the bottle and with a smile flicked her finger, a bead of water slicing off the foil and wires securing the cork. She then twisted it out effortlessly, a dull pop sounding. She poured us out some of the bubbling liquid, handing me a glass. “If anything, I’m surprised at how I’m feeling, like a fresh-faced idiot at eighteen again. Not that there’s anything wrong with being young and foolish. After all, I was quite good at being old and foolish.”

“You’re hardly old. Cheers.” I clinked my glass against hers, and we took sips of the expensive vintage. “Not bad, though honestly, I think I prefer the stuff we’re creating in the Boundary.”

“Best send grandmother a case then.” Ellie suggested, before her expression shifted. “And I believe I’m older than you, you know.”

“Yeah, but there’s only a year or two in it, isn’t there? And as we’re going to live more than a thousand years… that’s just a rounding error.”

“I see. Yes, when you think about it like that, it does seem like I’ve been foolish. Melissa too, no matter how worthy her intentions. But…” Ellie sipped at her champagne, before leaning in for a kiss, and I obliged. When we were done, she licked her lips, thinking. “But it might be lonely…”

“Nope. That’s why we are all in this together, all working hard. Shaeula’s right about one thing. Long lives are frightening, it’d be easy to just drown in ennui and become jaded, but… if we’re all there, and we help our families remain young too… well, it’ll just be a nice long adventure, won’t it?” I clinked my glass against hers.

“I suppose it will. Quite the wild ride at that.” she mused.

“No kidding. The Pantheons beyond Earth… even if we live to be a million, I bet there’d always be something new to experience. And even if there isn’t… I promise not to get bored of you.” I said that with a smile, showing I was joking, and before she could answer, in the distance, over London, some fireworks bloomed, shooting into the sky, exploding in flowers of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and silver.

“It reminds me of the Boundary…” Ellie remarked, watching, the light reflecting off her beautiful eyes.

“it reminds me of all the Etherites I sank into your grandmother’s gear.” I chuckled, pulling her close, and as she rested her head on my shoulder, we watched the display, drinking champagne. “But I suppose to be here like this with you, it’s a cheap price to pay.”

“I bet you say the same to all the others…” she grumbled, and I conceded.

“Similar. My compliments, just like my gifts, are tailored individually, as is my affection.” I promised. “I don’t see you as just one of many, but as Ellie.”

“Good. Because I feel like I’m going to very much enjoy being Ellie. Perhaps that’s even stranger than the events of the past few months.” We clinked glasses again, drained out champagne, and I poured us out fresh glasses as we watched the fireworks.

“To us, then.” I toasted, and she reciprocated.

“Yes, to us. The Princess and her soon-to-be Knight. Cheers!”

“Cheers!”

We clinked and drained our glasses, getting another refill, and as the fireworks, likely a display by some festival or company, died down, I reached out for Ellie, and we kissed, watching the fading sparks, before I whispered in her ear that sadly it was time to go.

“I know.” she murmured, clutching the coat and scarf I’d bought her. The snow, still a gentle dusting, shone under the lights of the viewing platform, giving the scene an idyllic appearance. “It’s very much a shame.”

“But, on the bright side…” I chuckled. “I’ll be seeing you again soon, won’t I? And it may not be a date, or us spending time alone, but… it’ll be fun, I can promise you that.”

“I suppose that’s the case. Though I can’t help but wonder, if I’d been nicer to you when we first met, and less rude to the others…”

“Oh, I’ve forgotten that already.” I grinned, grabbing some of the falling flakes. “It’s all melted away, like this snow. No point dwelling on what-ifs, when the this-is’ are so good.”

“You certainly have a way with words. I can see why the others keep an eye on you.” She drained the rest of her champagne. “I suppose we should return then. I’ll change for tomorrow, or rather today now… I expect I should dress to impress?”

“Keep it classy though.” I grinned, and she punched me gently in the shoulder.

“I’m a Princess. One thing I can manage is classy.” She offered me her hand, and I took it, and soon we were heading down the lift, ready for a short run back to the Palace. All right then… best head back to the Ring Gate. I glanced at my own watch. That way I’ll make it for everyone’s gift opening. Apologising to Ellie that she’d be the one that had already opened her presents, we quickly reached the Palace, moving through the streets like lightning, through Ellie was starting to pant a little due to my pace.

Once I delivered her safety back, I said my polite farewells to her mother and father, and Princess Diana mentioned that she’d be eagerly awaiting my return. I laughed that off, and with one final wave, I dismissed my Material body and restored it back in Japan.

No kidding you’re eager. Though I bet you’re not half as eager as my mom is. Now then… I stifled a yawn. Happy Christmas, happy Christmas everyone…
