Side Three Hundred And Thirty-Four – Mori Eri
“Come on, let’s go!” Aiko enthused, eager to be off, and Eri nodded. At least she’s feeling happier, and I can tell this isn’t just her trying to put on a brave face. Aiko, you really are a pain sometimes. But I should be sympathetic… Aiko was pulling on her hand with great strength, and Eri let herself be dragged along by her friend’s energy, and that thought made her smile a little.
It’s just like back in Nishimorioka. At least after Akio left. If I was left to my own devices, I’d just keep to myself, but Aiko didn’t like that. At least I grew used to some interaction with the members of the Kyūdō and volleyball clubs…
Aiko turned back to her, and gave a broad, sunny smile. “Wow, Eri, you’re just so cute right now, I could totally eat you up! Ouch! I told you, not the head! I don’t want to really be an idiot!”
Sorry, it’s a reflex. Eri never used to tease Aiko physically, but now it just seemed right. “I only flicked your forehead, don’t be a drama queen. I’d have thought you’d have had quite enough stress over the last few hours.”
“I know, but… don’t just take my word for it! You’re drawing attention with that pretty smile!” Aiko waved her free hand, and indeed, some of the bustling crowds were watching them, mostly men, but also some women.
“I think you are attracting plenty too.” Eri grumbled. “I admit I picked your outfit myself, and it’s still tasteful, but also… a little sexy.”
“Oh Eri, you’ll make me blush!” Aiko was indeed a little red, as she let out an embarrassed titter. “You’re looking great too, of course.” She paused, her expression suddenly serious. “I’m glad you’re getting a date still, even if it’s shared with Shaeula. I’m grateful to you and Kana, for thinking of me, seriously. And even though it was sometimes painful, my date was also quite exhilarating, you know? Wow…” She fanned her crimson face with her free hand. “…who would have thought it’d be this warm in December? I’m boiling. Anyway…”
Eri chose to ignore her clear embarrassment and let her speak.
“I’m happy you won’t miss out on the experience. I’m pleased for you, Eri. Really. This was always meant to be. You’re my bro’s dear childhood friend. It’s a shame you can’t be alone with him, but… that’s life, I guess?”
“Shiro and Tan are in the same situation, so it’s not like it’s just me.” Eri shrugged. “Now if we’re going to talk, we should do it in private.” Their voices were both low, as they had excellent hearing, but even so, people were gawking, and Eri loathed being the centre of attention, that hadn’t changed. “So…” she raised her voice. “Shopping, an arcade, or a café?”
“I’m a bit bored of arcades, and it was never your scene, was it? You were always happier reading than moving your body, though… that’s changed, hasn’t it?” Aiko’s blue eyes glinted knowingly. “In fact, you put in more effort than anyone else. And I’ve already just eaten, so maybe leave the café for later? Besides… we dreamed of being able to shop in the big city, didn’t we?”
Eri nodded. You more than me. I was a little ashamed of being the girl with the hand-me-down, battered school supplies, a phone that barely worked, clothes that were Aiko’s old ones… but I didn’t much care for the words of others, and when Akio and Aiko shut down the whispers, the slight bullying, I put it out of my mind. My treasures aren’t things, but my time with Akio and Aiko…
“Yes, but now we don’t really need anything, do we?” Eri shrugged as they continued moving through the crowds. Aiko had spotted a tall building, Shibuya 109, that Eri had heard Kana mention as a place she enviously wished she could spend time browsing through. “After all, our days of poverty are over. And Akio spoils us.”
Aiko paused. “Yeah. That he does. In more ways than one. Speaking of…”
“Oh, hi there.” A voice sounded, interrupting them, and the two girls turned. This always happens. How frustrating…
Two older men, though they were probably university age, so there wasn’t a large age difference, had approached. They had a decent appearance, Eri supposed, not that she cared, though they were a bit flashy, with tanned skin, bleached hair and expensive, bright shirts. Seeing that they had successfully attracted their attention, the man who had called out to them on the street grinned brightly, teeth white. Raising one hand, he waved cheerily. “Sorry to bother you, beauties, but it’s Christmas Eve, and so when I spotted two angels who seem to have fallen off the trees around here…”
His friend chuckled at the cheesy pickup line, and Eri frowned, her good humour and smile evaporating, Aiko, however, seemed curious, tilting her head quizzically as he finished his greeting. “…we had to come over and check you weren’t lost. Besides…” His grin was one he probably thought was alluring, though to Eri it was just aggravating. “…we’re gentlemen, aren’t we?”
“Yeah man, we totally are!” his friend agreed enthusiastically.
“So we couldn’t help but come over. After all, two beauties like you, without a man on Christmas Eve, why, it made us sad, didn’t it?”
“Yeah, we had to come and offer you our company, since we’re at a loose end ourselves.”
Listening to the two trying to pick them up, Eri’s fist clenched, but Aiko seemed amused. “Wow, so this actually happens, huh? Kana did say that she got hit on by uni guys all the time, I guess the big city really is different to back home. So, asking us out, are you?”
“Why not? The way you said ‘uni guy’ means you’re younger than we thought. You probably don’t have much pocket money, right? As your senpais here, we’ll treat you to something. We saw you eyeing the one-one-nine. There’s a great little café in there, and while it’s probably crowded today of all days, you can window shop while we wait for a free table. Women like that, yeah?”
Aiko… Eri’s hand tightened, and she winced, before rolling her eyes. “Sorry to rein in your enthusiasm, but…” Aiko pointed to the hand she was holding, and the ring on Eri’s finger. “…my friend has already got a boyfriend.”
There was a pause, and the two men exchanged glances. Some of the passers-by were looking on in amusement, and Eri’s irritation was spiking. I’m not a spectacle. Sometimes being beautiful is indeed a curse. Yes, I understand Kana better now. Though she doesn’t have to worry about this anymore. She’s with Akio now. As am I.
“Oh well. But you aren’t, are you?” he asked Aiko, and she shrugged, that cheerful smile still on her face.
“Nope. Still single.”
“In that case…” the men exchanged another knowing glance. “…why not hang with us anyway? We’ll keep you company. Besides…” His brown eyes glittered with the sort of enticing look Eri hated. I know I’m not being fair usually. Men are attracted to women, just like I feel that way for Akio. But…
“…your boyfriend can’t be that much of a gentleman, leaving you alone on Christmas Eve. Don’t worry, my friend here’s a good conversationalist, he’ll stop you from being bored.”
“Ouch!” Aiko let out a pained grunt, before forcing a smile. Eri apologised silently for the way her hand had tightened in a sudden vice grip. As the men seemed surprised, Aiko shook her head. “Oh, it’s nothing. But…” Aiko’s words were bright, and Eri couldn’t help but smile too, despite her anger, which froze the men momentarily. “Are you suuuuuuuuure…?” Aiko drew out the word in a singsong voice. “…that’s a good idea, you guys? Her boyfriend’s veeeeeeeeeery jealous, you know?”
“If so, he shouldn’t be leaving her alone today of all days. Still, his loss, our gain, right?” His friend also chuckled at his bold words.
“He’s busy, busier than you can imagine. So he left her to me for now.” Aiko insisted. “Anyway, you’ve probably heard of him.”
“Huh, why would I have?” the first man asked, and Aiko grinned wickedly, clearly enjoying herself.
“Because he’s the Hero of Britain, fiancé of Princess Mikasa, Oshiro Moonstone Akio.” My sis straightened her back, proud. “And you’re trying to pick up his sister, and his childhood friend and first fiancé.” She patted his shoulder gently. “So maybe you’d best give up? I’m flattered you think I’m cute enough to hit on, but if you keep pushing, Eri will probably beat you. And my bro is not the forgiving type when it comes to his women.”
With that, there was laughter from the few couples that were watching, and Aiko dragged Eri away. She gave the two stunned men one last frosty look, before shaking her head as they moved towards the entrance of the large department store building. “That was funny.” Aiko insisted, before pouting. “Except where you tried to crush my hand. My bones still ache.”
“Sorry. But I was frustrated.”
“I know.” Aiko chortled softly. “You really do only see my bro, other men are just dust to you.”
“That’s not… entirely… true.” Eri countered. “I can get along perfectly well with Akio’s friends, or the Fae like Ulfuric, or the brothers of Akio’s other fiancées who aren’t annoying. I know it well, I can’t be just a housewife anymore. I shouldn’t be. I need more.” They entered the large building, which was full of fashionable stores, and Eri watched as Aiko’s eyes sparkled. “I’m thankful that a lot of people have given me good advice. It’s a day for advice, it seems.” Eri narrowed her eyes as she looked around, uninterested. “This is the wrong place if you are looking for a gift for Akio. You have got him a gift, haven’t you?”
There was a long pause. “Haven’t you?” Eri repeated, and Aiko forced a smile, before pulling Eri in for a hug. Again, that drew the eyes of a number of fellow shoppers, and one girl muttered that it was heartwarming to see friends getting along.
“You know…” Aiko whispered. “…I’ve been in a funk recently. Ever since… well, you get it. Though it’s been building for a while. So I admit it, I forgot! I’ve been too worried… oh, screw that. What did you get him? Let me guess, you’re going to tie yourself up with red and white ribbons, and leave yourself under the Christmas Tree? It’ll be all ‘I’m your present this year, Akio, eat me up?’. If so, I can just do the same thing, can’t I? I’m sure they sell ribbons here… ouch! Quit it!”
Eri once again flicked Aiko’s forehead, her arm flexible enough to bend impossibly and reach, even in Aiko’s tight hug. She let go with a cry, rubbing at her forehead, and Eri sighed, feeling a slight headache coming on. “At least you’ve still kept your sense of humour. Of course, if it’s not a joke and you’re planning to…”
Aiko blinked, and suddenly went red as a tomato, probably remembering what Eri had whispered to her before, so that Akio couldn’t hear, which was a challenge, as his senses were incredibly acute. Aiko touched her ear that Eri had breathed into and frowned. “That’s not fair, Eri. I… don’t get you sometimes, not anymore. I’m grateful, but…”
“Let’s not do this here.” Eri dragged Aiko to the lift, and they were soon in a café, sitting down in one corner, as luckily there was one small table still uncopied by couples and groups of giggling women. Fortune at work, perhaps. I’ve always been lucky, I just never truly understood what I had until it was gone. Aiko was the same way. Luckily, what was lost has been regained, and it’s without price, and I’ll do anything, anything to protect my happiness, Akio’s happiness… and yes, Aiko’s happiness too. And I shouldn’t forget the others. Shaeula was right after all. Picturing her smug face, Eri shook her head. I don’t actually mind sharing my date with her. It’ll be chaotic, but… it’ll be fun. And warm. The warmth we missed when Akio was gone…
“Eri…” Aiko spoke hesitantly, seeing her facial expression. “I knew it, you haven’t… you don’t…”
“Quit babbling. It doesn’t suit you.” Eri insisted, smoothing her expression. It was a struggle not to show her Bakeneko features, even here in the Material, as she was under a lot of emotional stress, but it would only have caused a scene, so she persevered. It’s a lot easier with Split Thoughts, at least…
“I’m not babbling, I’m apologising!” Aiko insisted. “Besides, you… you looked scary.”
“As well I should. You said you were taking me out on a date, and so far all that’s happened is I’ve been hit on my a shady pickup artist, and my date’s suggested giving her most precious womanhood to someone else, her brother, no less.”
Aiko flapped her lips, mouth open in shock. “I… Eri…”
“That was a joke.” Eri insisted, deadpan, and Aiko’s red face darkened to almost purple, she was so embarrassed it looked like she might even pass out. As she slumped down, Eri waved over a server and placed a quick order for melon floats, as neither of them wished to eat much right now. Isolated again by the bubble of chatter and noise that made up this busy restaurant, Eri surveyed her best friend, pondering her words. I’ve already accepted that our lives will be what we make of them. They’ll never be normal, and… for me, that’s acceptable, so I’m accepting it. That’s the most important lesson I’ve learned since that day of both joy and worry, when Akio came back to Nishimorioka, Shaeula in his wake…
“I’m not sure it was funny…” Aiko pouted, and Eri raised one eyebrow mockingly.
“It was funnier than yours. Unless, like I said, it wasn’t a joke.”
“You know it was!” Aiko insisted. Soon two drinks were placed down, bright green, fizzy and with generous scoops of ice cream, topped with various brightly coloured sweets, floating within. Eri grasped her spoon and took a bite, her expression clearly showing she was unconvinced, and Aiko, dragged to Eri’s pace for once, kept talking rapidly.
“Look, I get how it sounds like I was asking my bro if he’d be prepared to make me his, but all I was really asking was for the surety that he’d be prepared to treat me as his most precious person if that was what I wanted. He’s the pervert that jumped straight to that!”
“Can you blame him?” Eri observed. “After all, you do make all the lewd, inappropriate jokes.”
“Yeah but… that’s because I like to tease him. Nothing more. Really!” Aiko repeated. “I like seeing my bro flustered, and… I like to be in his thoughts, okay? Either way, you should be disgusted with me. Either I was asking for my bro to… to take me, or… I was asking him to put me above you and the others. I… don’t get it. I love you for your kindness to me, but… I don’t get it!”
“It seems you don’t.” Eri idly picked at her ice cream, before taking a sip of the fizzy liquid. “Which is a black mark against you on this date. So far it’s not going so well. If you’re trying to seduce me… you’d fail anyway, as I’m faithful to Akio, but at least try and make it interesting.”
“You’ve changed.” Aiko shovelled ice cream into her mouth, cheeks bulging like a cute hamster as she swallowed. “I was always the teasing one. I think… that worries me too. I have lots of worries. I’m not worried about my bro anymore, but… you.”
“I had to change to be happy.” Eri agreed. “It felt awful, the jealousy, the fear, it all ate at me. Just like you felt, I imagine. But I realised that what I wanted was just to be with Akio. And that I am, and always will be. With you too. Though not in that way. I’m straight, and honestly, I wouldn’t cheat on Akio. Not even with you.” She winked and enjoyed Aiko’s embarrassed reactions. “As to why I’m not angry, I told you, didn’t I? I don’t care about morality, or what the world, our family, or even the Gods think of us. I care what we think, what Akio thinks, and yes, what Shaeula and the others think. And I’ll be blunt… if you said to me right now you were lying, and you did love Akio as a woman, any of us who turn against you or Akio over it wouldn’t be worth treating as a true sister.”
“I’m not going to say that!” Aiko puffed her cheeks again. “How many times do I have to say you’ve got the wrong idea?”
“Sure. And that’s certainly better for me, I won’t deny it.” Eri took a sip of her drink as she gathered her words. “I’m not inviting you.” She shrugged, eyes dark with brooding thoughts. “But… Aiko, I’ve swung my axe and taken lives. Killing is wrong, isn’t it? It’s a crime, even in self-defence. At least here in Japan. We’re a stupid country sometimes.” Eri shook her head, and Aiko had frozen, her own eyes wide with realisation. “I don’t feel any regret. That surprises me. Some of the others, they’re struggling with it. Me… I’d do it again without much thought if anyone threatened us, threatened our family… compared to that, my bloody hands… am I supposed to care if you want to… want to fuck your brother?”
“I don’t! I swear!” Aiko was nearly in tears at not just the repeated insinuations, but also Eri’s words. “I love my bro, I get it. I’m not in denial, I’m a brocon to end all brocons, but… you said it yourself, didn’t you? You just wanted to be with him! I’m the same, I want to be with him, with you, always. And with all those who are creeping into my heart! I just couldn’t bear that I felt there was a wall I couldn’t cross, that I’d be on the outside, less and less memorable in your hearts! It’s nothing immoral… ah…” Aiko realised she had made a mistake, and her sorrowful expression made Eri’s heart ache. “Sorry. Sorry. I’m not saying that the killing…”
“I don’t care. It’s the path I chose. To walk alongside Akio for ever. But it’s laughable, isn’t it? How small we humans are. Don’t do this, do that, that’s bad, that’s wrong, that’s good… I only have one guiding principle. I won’t do anything to make Akio sad. And I’ll do my best to make him smile. Because that’s all I really need. Because I know that he’ll be doing the same for me, so I’ll be happy too,”
Aiko was silent for a moment, masking her tears and embarrassment with her melon float. She drank deeply from it, before looking Eri in the eyes. “Sometimes I forget how straightforward you can be, Eri. I’m… sorry. I should have realised you were struggling with things too.”
“I’m not struggling. If anything, that’s the problem.” Her lips quirked in irritation. “A little voice deep down tells me I should be, that I should be more saddened, and that I should be dismayed at what you and Akio decided, but… I’m not. It all seems so straightforward to me. I think… I’m probably broken as a person, and always have been. I don’t get it. Mother and father are ordinary…”
“It’s surely my bro’s fault.” Aiko finished wiping her tears. “But I forgive him. Because… his YandERI, my Eri, is cute.”
“Still trying to seduce me?” Eri chuckled softly. Aiko’s right though. It is good to get worries off my chest. Shaeula wouldn’t understand, and… Kana and I, we’re friends now, but we still don’t like to appear weak to each other. Shiro wouldn’t get it, she’s a very self-centred woman, so…
“This is a date.” Aiko snickered, her good humour slowly returning. “But my bro can be a cry-baby, so I best not. Breaking his heart over Christmas would be a shitty move for such an adorable sister as me.”
“You say that…” Eri smirked, feeling better. “…but since you forgot his present, it looks like you might have to go with your prior plan. I’m sure we can buy ribbons…”
“Eri!” Aiko gasped, sounding scandalised, putting a hand to her chest. “My heart can’t take your cuteness! Never mind me seducing you, I’ve fallen for you!”
“Sure you have. But then you’ll suffer your second rejection of the day…”
“My bro didn’t reject me!”
“Sure, I’m sure his tortured, weary expression as he considered you was a green flag.” Eri teased. “…that aside, as I’ve told you, I’m straight, and I’m not going to cheat on Akio. I know you’re joking though.” I suppose it’s only natural to be curious. Aiko promised me a fun time here so I might as well enjoy myself by teasing her… “You should have gone with that guy who tried to pick you up if you’re curious. See what a date is like.”
“No way. He’s not my type. Kana-chan’s right. Guys who try and pick you up in the street or in shops are the worst. Besides…” Aiko winked, and Eri sighed.
“Yes, you won’t lose to me, you insist. But I’m afraid you already have. Though I’m sure there are some ‘good enough’ men out there. Though if you are going to cause Emily some confusion and go for girls, best be swift, before Akio scoops them all up.”
Aiko was silent for a minute, swirling the drink with her spoon. “You know…” she began. “The old you would never have been able to joke about that so casually.”
“I surprised myself by being more adaptable than I ever imagined.” Eri agreed. “That and again, I have had a lot of good advice. Don’t worry, I’m always willing to listen to you, and so are the others. Not that some of them would be much help. If you make these jokes with Shaeula, you will end up in a threesome with her and Akio, even if she has to drag you there. So please don’t. She’s been good recently and isn’t pushing every woman she meets on Akio. Now she’s at least decided to just focus on a few she thinks will fit in and has started laying the groundwork. But I think she’ll have a hard time with some of them…”
“Yeah. She’s a free spirit, a storm.” Aiko agreed, waving over the waitress again and refreshing their drinks. “Still, if that did happen, you’d join in, wouldn’t you Eri? I’d be too shy alone…”
Seriously? Make up your mind, Aiko. No, that’s not fair. I know you are still joking, but… it’s not about Akio, it’s about how far I’ll go to keep Aiko in my heart… “I suppose I’d have to. But I keep telling you, I’m not into women. In fact, oddly enough, there’s not many amongst us that are.”
“I’ve been wondering though.” Aiko asked, once the new drinks arrived. Her face was pink, even her neck and ears, which showed she was embarrassed, but her eyes were sparkling. “I mean, it’s not like… like I’ve ever had sex, is it?”
Eri nearly spat out her drink at that, only her stats helping her maintain her calm. “I told you, it’s not about sex. I’d be happy just by being at Akio’s side, sharing his life. That’s what love is.”
“I get that. But… it feels good, right? Everyone seems to enjoy it.” Aiko pressed.
Now I know how Akio feels sometimes. That is not a conversation I want to have with Aiko, but… I’m not ashamed, and… we can share anything with each other. “I won’t deny it. But if you’re that bothered, just use a vibrator until you find someone.”
Now it was Aiko’s turn for her eyes to bulge and nearly leak her drink. “Wow. Wow. Just. Wow.” Aiko shook her head. “My Eri’s a perverted woman, talking about sex toys. I didn’t know you even knew about those things.”
“I’m hardly a noble daughter.” Eri’s retort was dry. “And you know that the two perverts back in our class talked about such things.”
“Oh yeah. Hentai kings one and two.” Aiko nodded. “But does that mean you… masturbate?” She lowered her voice, despite the noise and bustle of the restaurant meaning nobody could hear them.
“I don’t need to. I have Akio.” Eri snorted. “As for you… it’d solve a lot of problems and let out some frustration, I’d imagine. And now you live in a house with walls that aren’t paper-thin…”
“Wow, time out, time out!” Aiko fanned her red face. “This is going too far! But… maybe it’s date talk, I don’t know? It’s not like I don’t know what it feels like, but… I never stuck my fingers inside!”
“Really?” Eri was surprised, and Aiko seemed a little angry at that, so she clarified. Teasing Aiko is fun, but… I can honestly see why she might be frustrated sexually. Back in Nishimorioka, it wouldn’t have crossed our minds often, but here… she’s subject to Akio’s active life, and mine too, I suppose. Though of course I’m only with Akio. “I’d have imagined that your hymen was broken years ago. You’ve always been an active girl. I know that Natsumi told me once that despite horses being a noble pursuit, most girls don’t ride much until they get married, and if they do, they ride very gentle horses with trained gaits, to prevent damage to the proof of their chastity.” I think that’s a nonsense… or so I’d like to say, but honestly, if I didn’t get to experience a proper first time, I’d have been regretful forever…
“Wow, it’s so uncomfortable hearing you talking about that!” Aiko muttered, before shaking her head. “Yeah, honestly, it was torn when I was still in middle school. Not that it mattered. Like you say, a lot of athletes do break it. But what does that have to do with not sticking anything inside? That’s… I want my first time to be special, you know? Besides, now… oh Gods…” She slammed her head into the table softly. “…this is almost as bad as when my bro said he’d take me as a woman if I wanted. You both make my heart race. It grew back, okay? Ether Healing restored it. Huh…” Aiko paused, thinking. “Hasn’t yours then?”
“No. I’d imagine that’s because I don’t see myself as a virgin, whereas you do.” Eri explained her thoughts. “It’s not like I couldn’t, but there’s no benefit in having one. It’s actually uncomfortable, the first time. It’s our hearts that matter.”
“Ever the experienced woman. Everyone back in Nishimorioka would be shocked.” Aiko marvelled. Finishing off the ice cream on her second float, she sighed. “Wow, we got lewd, didn’t we? In all seriousness… so like, you’ve been in orgies with my bro, so… you don’t do stuff together? The hentai kings used to talk about threesomes and stuff. Though they’ll be lucky if they ever so much as sniff a girl in their lives…”
Eri narrowed her eyes. Seriously, Aiko, so persistent. “Are you sure you’re not coming out? It’s not like I care. I’ll support you.”
“No, I swear I’m not! But you can’t blame a girl for being curious!”
“Unconvincing. Maybe you’re just a pervert. Though how you can reconcile your lusting after girls with your thirst for Akio I don’t…”
“Eri, stop bullying meeeeeeeee!” Aiko interrupted, and Eri’s lips quirked into a smile.
“I can’t help it. You’re completely vulnerable right now. It’s like you’ve finally opened up to us, but you’re now totally defenceless. Anyway, to answer your question…” Eri genuinely pondered it. “…sure, I’ve been together with others when we make love, but we’ve never done anything particularly dirty with each other. Our lips have met when we’ve given Akio blowjobs, and we’ve shared some of his cum, but…” She trailed off as Aiko was covering her face with her hands, practically glowing with heat. “Maybe I should stop. Aiko, you’re such a child in some ways. So bold but it’s all just a front.”
“Yeah, that’s me. I joke about everything, but I’m all talk. It’s probably why I was so floored when my bro answered my pleas… seriously, if I had asked him, and he said yes like that, I don’t know what I’d have done…”
Hmm. “It’s fine. I know Akio finds your naivety cute, it makes him protective. I feel the same way. Look, Aiko.” Eri was serious now. “There’s no rush. I know it can be frustrating, and you feel left out. But your time will come. And if it doesn’t… I’ll look after you forever.”
“And show me the pleasures of the flesh?” she teased, despite her red face, and Eri rolled her eyes.
“Still trying to seduce me, huh?” Eri finished her second drink. “If that day ever comes, you’d need Akio’s permission, and I’m not doing it without him…”
“Wow, no way! Now even you’re conspiring against me!” Aiko giggled, finishing her own drink, before taking Eri’s hand, surprising her. “Thanks a lot. For everything. I know I’ve said it, but… I should have been supportive of your worries too. I… didn’t see you were having problems.”
Oh, Aiko… Eri waved a hand dismissively, embarrassed in a way she wasn’t usually, even when talking about Akio and sex. “It’s fine. I promise. Compared to the stress you’ve put me through today, it’s nothing. Now…” Eri narrowed her onyx eyes. “…about that Christmas present?”
“Oh shit! Yeah… I don’t need to get it now, as I’ll have time after our date and before the concert, but… if I don’t get him a gift, I’ll be too ashamed to face him! What did you get him?” Aiko suddenly froze. “Shit, what do you get the man who has everything? We’ve never had this problem before.”
“I’d have thought you of all people would have worked it out, Aiko.” Eri’s grin was now mischievous. “We have the ultimate advantage. After all, what did we do when we were children?”
“Oh!” Aiko’s eyes widened. “That’s awesome! You’re still so smart, Eri. But…” Reaching over, she grabbed Eri’s hand and winked. “Now I don’t want to wait! Help me out, okay? After all, right now, we’re dating!”
“Dream on!” Eri scoffed, but she squeezed Aiko’s hand back. Really, you’re almost as whimsical and impulsive as Shaeula. But that’s just how you have to be. We love and prefer the troublesome, boisterous Aiko, cracking jokes and being inappropriate, rather than the afraid, sullen and jealous Aiko. So… I’ll humour you. Just like Akio, I’ll go as far for you as you need. Just as I know you would for us. After all… what’s any small compromise, compared to what we’ve endured, what we’ll have to do in the future? For happiness… none of us will ever stop or back down, that I promise you…
“But since you asked so earnestly, I’ll help you out. But you’d better make it worth my while!”
“Want a kiss? I’m shy, but for you…” Aiko teased, pursing her lips, and Eri pulled her to her feet.
“Come on. Ironically, I’m sure that what we need should be around here somewhere, but since it’s your gift, you can pay…”
***
“Don’t be shy, Eri!” Aiko was putting on a face like a dirty old man, her lips loose, her eyes wide, as she shoved Eri into the changing room, clothes in hand. Beside her was the wrapped bundle of the unfinished Christmas gift for Akio.
“After all, you said it yourself, we’ve both seen each other naked no end of times! It’s perfectly innocent!”
“Sure it is.” Eri sighed. I’m happy she’s in high spirits. I’m not overly comfortable she’s spending money on clothes for me, but that’s definitely something I shouldn’t worry about. Not anymore. I guess old habits are a pain to break, though these aren’t her used clothes anymore… “But I’ll humour you. We’ve still got time, since Hyacinth and Shiro are up next. I do think we should spend some time with Shaeula before the concert though. And you need time to prepare your present.”
Entering the changing room together, Aiko drew the curtain shut, placing the clothes she’d picked down. “You’re right. I need to flirt… I mean make up with…” she giggled cheerfully. “…Shaeula too. I’ll make you jealous!”
“Me? It would be Akio who would be…” Eri grumbled, eyeing the clothes Aiko had picked out, which were definitely stylish, but not the sort of thing Eri usually wore. But then, I suppose that’s the point. “I’m beginning to suspect your motives…”
“Ah, that’s no fun then.” Aiko surrendered with a wink. “Though seriously, I do owe Shaeula too. And want to spend time with her. She said it herself, didn’t she? Akio will make sure we all live long, happy lives, so I shouldn’t have been worrying.”
“No, worrying is fine. Worrying alone is the problem.”
“Yeah, got it. No need to keep repeating it, I promise I understand. Anyway…” Aiko nudged her bag of supplies aside. “We’ll need to hunt down that slacking cat and get her to transport this to the Boundary for the finishing touches. Really, Eri, I’m in awe of how well you know my bro.” She rubbed her cheek against Eri’s as if she was a cat herself, smiling broadly. “It’s something I should have thought of myself. I guess there’s a gap between a sister and a girlfriend in that regard. However…” Her excitement was palpable. “…as a sister, this is something I understand, so consider this a present to my bro too.”
“Sure, sure.” Eri agreed, pushing Aiko away, then releasing the clasps on her dress. She stepped out of it and placed it neatly on one of the hangars.
“Underwear too! You don’t get to avoid buying lucky underwear! You’ll even get to use it, unlike me! Wow, just thinking of it…”
“Okay, calm down.” Eri shook her head. She’s getting rather hyperactive. It’s been fun though, I’ll admit. They had shopped for a while, and not just for Akio’s present. Eri and Aiko had bought little gifts for their family and friends. Nothing expensive, even though they had money, gifts were about the thoughts of the giver, not price tags. It was a surreal experience though, making a call to their driver, who came and collected all of the bags. Our lives have changed so much. And I’ll fight to defend it. I will.
Aiko had been amusingly and also annoyingly clingy, teasing her constantly, and Eri, unwilling to concede, had fired back with a number of pointed jokes, many of which had left Aiko red-faced and shy, at least for a few moments, until she recovered. At one point they had been stopped by a group of people who had seen posts of Aiko and Akio in the batting cages, and they had mistaken her for one of Akio’s girlfriends again, which had been a funny misunderstanding. Serves her right. I do have a lot of sympathy for him, there’s no other way to take what Aiko was asking him, at least from how she describes it. But I’ll let her denials convince me. It’s certainly less stressful that way. I don’t want to imagine the heartbreak that would occur, and sadly, I can all too clearly.
Taking off her bra, she then slid down her panties, now naked. Aiko was looking her up and down with satisfaction, muttering to herself, but Eri didn’t take the bait. I’m not embarrassed, why would I be? If I can make love to Akio surrounded by the others, even serve him together, this is nothing…
“Huh, this bra is strange…” Eri was confused at first, but Aiko chuckled.
“You never were into fashion much, were you? Me neither, obviously we couldn’t afford it, but at least I listened to some other girls and read a few articles online. The top is a bit daring, so if you wear an ordinary bra, the straps and cup will show through. It’s really cute for such a strapless bra.”
“I can’t argue.” Eri liked the colour, a bright crimson. It reminded her of stargazing with Akio and Aiko in Nishimorioka, the colour of Betelgeuse, one of the stars she used to adore watching with whatever makeshift telescopes they could cobble together or borrow from the school. I miss those days, but… I wouldn’t go back. Not anymore. This now is the present I want, and I wish for Aiko to want it too.
She fiddled with it for a while, and with a cheeky grin, Aiko reached out to help but Eri swatted her aside. “I know you’re playing, but… I was serious earlier.”
“Wow, no fun! I’ll just watch then. My bro’s stingy, keeping you… ouch! Not the head again…” Eri’s tail appeared, whacking her. It then vanished in a faint puff of aether, which dissipated quickly.
“It’s my own pride. If the only way to make you happy was to be your lover… I’d do it. I’m no weaker than Akio.” Eri promised. At that, Aiko’s breath was indrawn, and she looked surprised, only for Eri’s tail to appear and bang her on the head again. “Why so shocked? Our relationship isn’t so weak. I’d… I’d kill for you. This isn’t a challenge in comparison. But then… I’d hope you’d return the favour with what I would need to make me happy.”
“I get it. Wow, damn… all roads lead to Rome, as mom would say. But…” Her blue eyes were serious now, none of her prior teasing. “I appreciate it, Eri. And I’d have done the same for you. If you were going to waste away in Nishimorioka, I’d have… taken care of you.”
“Liar.” Eri pulled on the matching red panties. The design was surprisingly similar to the ones she had picked out for Aiko, which might not have been a coincidence. “You were going to run off to Tokyo. I don’t blame you, but…”
“Wow, I’m being so misunderstood.” Aiko snickered. “We both know that was a hopeful dream, I didn’t believe it could happen. My bro scrimped and saved even while in high school, doing odd jobs, and he worked all through uni.”
“And he wasted money on gifts for you, like your Kyūdō Yumi.” Eri countered, as she looked at the daring skirt Aiko had picked out. It was black with red, glittery lining which shone through as one moved, and it was far shorter than Eri would normally wear, not that she liked skirts and dresses much anyway.
“Don’t remind me. My bro really was good to me, to us, and never asked much in return. I’m still going to be angry he ditched us… I’ll have to be honest with myself, but I get it. Oh, and I know the skirt is short, that’s the beauty of it. It’s the novelty! Hinata wears them that length all the time! Besides, it’s just family and friends tomorrow. It’s not like you’ll be wearing it outside.”
“Fine.” Eri agreed. “But you’re changing the subject.” She put on the skirt, before pulling on red stockings with black ribbons and detailing. She then took the black top, which was daringly backless and armless, and was stopped from being vulgar by the fact the cleavage was hidden by a flourish of scarlet lace. It too was double layered, with red beneath the black, and when Eri was dressed, she admitted she was surprised how sexy it was, while still being charming. Aiko has a good eye…
“I know. Oh, don’t forget the heels. I know they aren’t your style, but… you have the grace for them. Anyway, if I did go to uni… you could have lived with us. At least I thought that. Wow, Akio’s home was a pokey dump. If I did live with him there’d have been no privacy, we’d have been stumbling on each other in compromising situations all the time! It would have been hell if we three were crammed in there. Unless you were actually dating my bro, it wouldn’t have been right.”
I see. She’s given it some thought, at least…
“Anyway, I’m not lying. Just like bro left you, I’d have… but I swear it would have been temporary. At least… I thought so. After all, when I got a job, I’d have money… but…” She bit her lip. “…bro never came back. So… maybe I’d have done the same, lived my own life. Sorry, Eri.”
“Don’t be.” Eri pulled on the black heels. Standing up, she admired her reflection again. “It was my fault for being the weakest of us. But I’ll never be weak or a coward again. That me is dead.” She then chuckled, her ears and tail appearing, the tail freely able to appear from the backless top without messing with her skirt, which slid down just a little, making it a touch less scandalous. “Maybe I should have wished the same, but I didn’t have the bravery. I always needed you, needed Akio, to fill me with courage. Now…” She patted Aiko’s shoulder, surprising her. “…I don’t mind listening to your worries.”
“Wow, role reversal. But…” Aiko looked Eri up and down and let out an admiring whistle. “…I like the strong, confident Eri! My date is the cutest!”
“You’re plenty cute yourself.” Eri chuckled. “So, are you buying this outfit?”
“Yeah!” She gave a thumbs-up. “My Christmas treat for you and my bro! So, have you got me a gift?”
“I’m not as mopey and forgetful as you.” Eri insisted. “But as to what, wait and see…” A role reversal, huh? Maybe it is, but then… no relationship can stay the same for ever… but the emotions and affection at the heart of them can…

“You really were here, totes cool!” Sana-san, the gaudily dressed, simple yet good-natured daughter of one of Akio’s subordinates said with foolish surprise. She was with two other gyaru-style friends, who were gaping at them, which Eri found a little rude, but not unusual. They had continued their shopping for a while and had eventually ended up in a little restaurant with a view of the iconic Kabukichō Ichibangai archway, the torii-style electronic gate.
“Sure were.” Aiko had posted pictures into the various group chats they were in of their ‘date’, which honestly had felt more like when they were younger, more innocent. Aiko had played up constantly, teasing her and trying to get a reaction, but Eri was wise to her games, and just enjoyed their time together. “I didn’t know you’d be about, Sana-chan. Oh, where are my manners? I’m Aiko, this is Eri. No need to bother with formalities. Sana-chan’s friends are surely our friends too!”
As the two girls blushed, mesmerised by Aiko’s charms, Eri rolled her eyes. “Cheating on me already?” she joked, and Aiko shook her head.
“Perish the thought. I wouldn’t do that to you, Eri! Anyway…”
“Oh, yeah. This is Toko-chan and Ranko-chan.” Sana-san sat down, gesturing for her friends to do the same, though she felt a little embarrassed. “You sure we can interrupt you today? I mean, we’re at a loose end, so…”
“It’s cool.” Aiko insisted airily. “Eri’s stubbornly resisting my flirting anyway. You’d think I wasn’t cute, the way she rebuffs me!”
“Nah, it’s totes not that.” Sana-san’s smile was rueful. “You’re a beauty, Aiko-chan, and everyone knows it. She’s just totally head-over-heels for your brother, isn’t she?”
Eri nodded, and Aiko waved a hand grandly as the newcomers sat down. “Yeah, my bro’s such a lucky dog. If he hesitated too much longer, maybe I’d have needed to snap her up myself!”
“Whoa, never knew ya felt that way!” Sana-san managed, and Eri rolled her eyes.
“She doesn’t, she’s just in high spirits. After all… Christmas has always been a bit of a rough time for us, especially the last couple of years. Now…”
“Yeah, I get it.” Sana-san agreed, picking up a menu, and Aiko offered to pay. The girls tried to refuse, but Aiko insisted, so they gave in. “My home’s been a nightmare… though my bitch of a stepsister has been quiet at least, ever since she lost her bet. Still, I’m spending Christmas at dad’s. And… there’s some ceremony tomorrow I’ve been sked to go to.”
Eri nodded. “Yes. For Adamant members. I don’t think it’s a big deal, but it’ll be something to remember.”
“I’m like… wowed, ya know?” one of Sana-san’s friends, Ranko-san gushed. She was fairly average in appearance, and Eri wasn’t exactly a fan of her extreme style of fake tan and heavy makeup, but it did make her stand out. “I don’t get it, but… it’s like she’s part of some superhero club!”
“It’s not like that, ya feel me?” Sana-san waved a hand, embarrassed. “And I’m totes a nobody compared to the rich girls and tough women they have in the group.” She paused, clearly embarrassed, yet a bit proud. “Dad didn’t want me to join. He says… uh, what was it, oh yeah, it’s totes the ‘connotations’ of it. I told him to grow up, I mean, not like your brother’s going to give me a second look, ya know?”
She lowered her voice as drinks were brought over, brightly coloured fruit cocktails to be sipped through decorative straws. “There are a few groups going out together today, strengthening their bonds. But I’m totes out of place there. But nobody bullies me, everyone’s a good girl. And I’m feeling like I’ve got a purpose, a dream, ya know? To be somebody I can be proud of…” She grinned impishly then. “And to totes put my bitchy stepsister in her place again, ya feel me?”
“That’s not true, Sana-chan! You’re as good as anyone, you know!” Toko-chan, a short girl with her hair elaborately piled up, insisted, and her friend echoed her. Eri leaned back, shaking her head, and glanced at Aiko, who grinned.
“I remember when you brought your sister. She was a funny girl.” Aiko reminisced. “That concert was great. Speaking of… since Red and White are now training with us, we have loads of tickets to their concert later. You coming, girls?”
Seeing the painful hope in their eyes, Sana-san nodded. “Sure. I have money now, it’s all good. I even get paid, it’s totes a great deal, being an Adamant girl. Though it’s hard work, and that’s the truth.”
“No pain, no gain!” Aiko insisted. “Anyway, you stick with us!” She then snapped more pictures of them all and posted the selfies in the group chats. “So anyway, got all your Christmas shopping done?”
“Yeah. First year I felt any respect for my dad in ages.” Sana-san agreed. “I hope he’ll be happy, but I’m not good at picking out gifts for old men, ya feel me?”
“I wouldn’t call him old. Just some advice” Eri observed, and Sana-san blushed as her friends laughed.
“That’s totes a shock, ya don’t normally say much.” Sana-san observed, and Eri rolled her eyes, while it was Aiko’s turn to laugh now.
“Eri’s not one for interfering… except in my business. Though that’s what’s so cute about her!” Aiko blew Eri a cheeky kiss and leaned in conspiratorially. “So, a question for you girls, though it might be more relevant for you, Sana-chan. You… saw the media footage, yeah? Of the terrorist attacks?” At their nods, Aiko continued. “You… know it was a life-or-death battle, right? In your case, Sana-chan, I know you’ve been at the waterfront, clearing monsters who wash up on shore.”
“Yeah, it’s not my favourite, ya know. But I did it.” She swallowed. “How can I not, if young cuties like little Marika-chan, and that Arisa-chan from Adamant can? I’ve totes got my pride, get it? But you’re saying… could I do the same?” She shook her head. “I don’t know. I’m not so smart, ya feel me? But that’s what the training is for, am I right? Like being in the army, I guess?”
“So you’re prepared…” Aiko pressed, and Eri realised what she was doing. Oh, Aiko. This is far more endearing than all your fake flirting. You foolish, wonderful friend…
“…to take a life in the defence of yourself and others?”
“Damn, way to put a girl on the spot, am I right?” She turned to her two friends. “Toko-chan, Ranko-chan, if it was our school which was attacked by terrorists, and I had to draw my sword to protect ya both, would ya blame me? Fear me? I wouldn’t blame ya both if ya did, but…”
“Never.” Toko-chan insisted. “We don’t hate the police, or the self-defence force, do we?”
“That’s right, don’t be stupid. That ya’d fight for us, that’s like crazy inspiring, yeah?” Ranko-chan agreed.
“See?” Aiko puffed out her chest triumphantly. “Eri, you swing your axe to protect. Just like you did in Kyoto. Thanks to you, Marika-chan and the others are still here with us. And you protected our home, and our families.” She turned to the girls who had joined them, expression serious. “Eri here, it’s been eating her up that she’s not sad she saved so many lives. It’s just crazy, isn’t it?”
“I may be dumb, but I think it’s totes not the saving. But…” Sana-san’s brown eyes were serious. “…I don’t think it’s right to cry over those who are wicked, ya feel me? Besides, ya looked beautiful then, ya know? Like some Shinigami, a grim reaper of the battlefield. I know a lot of those in Adamant respect ya and look up to ya. I do too. If anyone tells ya that what ya did was wicked, even yourself, then I’ll totes stick up for ya!” Her weird street-slang gyaru accent was thickening as she spoke rapidly with great seriousness.
“Exactly! Well said!” Aiko cheered. “I knew I liked you, Sana-chan!” She was so bright every word was an exclamation. “Eri’s always been a brooder. It makes her adorable, but… she’s a grown woman now, she needs to get over childish habits!”
“You’re one to talk…” Eri grumbled. “It’s not like you weren’t moping over your problems, being a martyr and suffering in silence. But you can’t fool us.”
“Seems like she’s over it.” Sana-san giggled, pulling out her phone. “There’s videos and photos of ya out with your brother all over the internet. Totes sweet. Ya look so good together. I’d think ya were lovers if I didn’t know better, ya feel me?”
“Aha, no way.” Aiko slapped the table, chuckling ruefully. “Blood related sister, one hundred percent guaranteed. It was fun though. And I even beat my bro, though… I had to get him to keep his eyes shut, and even then, there was only one strike in it…”
“She was worried about being left behind, forgotten.” Eri rolled her eyes. “Sana-chan, you’re an outsider, what do you think?”
“Whoa, seriously? Aiko-chan, I thought ya were smarter than that! Your brother totes adores you, as does Eri-chan here, and I know Shaeula does too, and the others.” She shook her head, incredulous. “Forgotten? No way. There are women in Adamant who wish they could be as close to him as you, ya feel me?”
“Exactly.” Eri approved. See? Everyone is aware of it but you. I don’t even think death could stop Akio from coming back to us. I know you’ve been scared of that too. But… we just have to have faith, and when faith isn’t enough, that’s when we need to be strong. “But she was depressed and forlorn, so we’ve had to spoil her all day…”
“Eri, you’re embarrassing me! Soothe my heart with a sweet kiss!” Aiko leaned over, pursing her lips and making sloppy noises, but Eri extended a finger and flicked her forehead again. As she cried out in mock-pain and the girls giggled, enjoying the banter, Eri shook her head. I can’t say this hasn’t been fun. I do… feel a little better. Not that I was letting my feelings cause me distress. Though… it’s certainly pleasant to be understood. Now then…
She turned her attention back to the table, and the amusing so-called date. Might as well relax, until later…
