Chapter 397 - Chapter 397: Chapter 390: Vitality
Chapter 397: Chapter 390: Vitality
“To put it this way,” Director Zhu placed the x-ray film on the table, “this young girl was raised by an old traditional Chinese doctor, so she’s been exposed to our traditional medicine since childhood. She claims to be a simple village doctor, but it’s not that simple, you see. You should all know that many aspects of our traditional medicine have been lost to time, aspects we can’t even begin to comprehend or imagine.”
“Perhaps what this young girl knows are these very things.”
“I asked her once, and she gave me two words,” Director Zhu held up two fingers. Indeed, just two words.
“Vitality.”
“The reason we wanted to amputate Mr. Huang’s leg is that it has necrosed. It’s dead and hence, gone.”
“So we had to cut it off because if we didn’t, the infection could spread to other, healthy parts of the body. But what if the leg was alive? In that case, the leg could be saved, and the little girl’s Divine Needle might be the thing bringing life back to the remaining vitality in the leg. That’s why it could be possible to save the leg. I’m not sure if this is the right interpretation, but it’s somewhat along these lines.”
Other doctors seemed to understand at this point. As for the so-called ‘vitality,’ they might need a lot of time to comprehend it fully. However, this glimmer of vitality is what they, as doctors, want to hold onto. They don’t want to give up on it because sometimes, this glimmer of hope can save a person’s life.
How precious life is. As doctors, how could they not understand or know this?
And they are the ones who bring vitality to their patients.
Tang Yuxin placed the lunch box she was holding onto a table next to her.
Mr. Huang could now sit up. Though he couldn’t move his leg, it felt much less painful than before. Recently, he even felt a tingling sensation in it.
Having this sensation is a good sign, signaling that his wound is recovering, healing. In a while, the bandages would be removed and he’d be able to walk again.
“Did you bring me something good?”
Mr. Huang asked with a smile, now in much better spirits, sometimes even joking around with Tang Yuxin. Tang Yuxin found him to be a fun person to be around, not realizing that in the military, he was a stoic enforcer, who could sometimes be heartless to a fault.
But he was aware that his status had changed. He was not the man who used to deal with priceless artefacts worth millions, but an ordinary patient whose legs were almost completely destroyed in an explosion. If it weren’t for the young doctor, his legs would have been gone by now. He was conscious when he was first admitted to the hospital; he heard the doctors say his legs had to be amputated. Everybody echoed that sentiment – after this, he would have half a body, no legs.
Later, pain woke him up. By then, he had already undergone surgery. When he regained consciousness, the first thing he asked the nurse was why there was still pain in his legs when they were said to be gone.
The nurse told him that his legs were still there. Gu Ning had brought a young doctor from Beijing who kneeled on the floor, performing a surgery that lasted over ten hours to save his legs. The young doctor had also mentioned that the injury was extremely painful, but he had no choice but to endure it.
When he heard that his legs were saved, he was instantly brought to tears of joy, unable to contain his emotions.
He was fifty years old, and he had never felt the urge to cry like this. He truly wanted to kneel and thank the heavens, to thank fate.
He let out a sigh; the worst was over. His legs were still there, which meant they were healing.
Tang Yuxin took out a small bowl and spooned some of the food from the thermos into it. She then placed it in front of Mr. Huang who picked up the bowl and smelled it.
“The smell doesn’t seem too pleasant?”
Despite his comment, he didn’t show any distaste, lifting the bowl and drinking its contents immediately.
“Chinese medicine?” He placed the bowl back down after finishing, “It’s quite bitter, though.”
“It is a bit bitter,” Tang Yuxin scooped another bowl for him, saving the remaining for the afternoon.
“Why do I need to drink Chinese medicine?” Mr. Huang asked Tang Yuxin. Regardless, he trusted her completely, even if she were to ask him to drink poison, he would do so without batting an eye.
“To flush out the toxins in your leg.”
“There are toxins in your leg now, but because it’s bandaged, they can’t be expelled. So we can only resort to this method.” Tang Yuxin put the thermos aside, planning to reheat the remaining contents for Mr. Huang in the afternoon.
Can it be ingested? Mr. Huang wanted to ask, but in the end, he didn’t. Whatever Dr. Xiaotang said was right. A few hours later, he finally understood what Tang Yuxin meant by flushing out toxins.
After a while, he started to sweat, and his urine output increased. It was yellow, but after all the sweat was expelled, his leg felt much lighter, as if it didn’t hurt or itch anymore, but felt extremely comfortable instead.
Even a fairy couldn’t shake Tang Yuxin’s standing in his mind at this point.
Dr. Xiaotang was truly a miracle worker. He believed she was a potential recruit for their main hospital. Even if she wasn’t, he’d try to get her transferred to their military. He wondered how many soldiers, how many talents this one pair of medical hands could save in the future.
However, he was overestimating Tang Yuxin’s abilities. No matter how skilled she was, she was only one person. Each surgery took several hours, sometimes more than ten. She only had twenty-four hours in a day, not forty-eight or more.
She couldn’t possibly save everyone. They needed everyone’s help.
Mr. Huang probably drank the herbal medicine for about two weeks. The sweat on his body gradually changed from a yellow hue to a normal one, and he could feel strength returning to his leg, although he still couldn’t move it at will.
Today was the day the bandages on his leg were to be removed,
Several doctors and nurses were already there. They wanted to witness the birth of a miracle, curious as to how a pair of legs that had been sentenced to death managed to heal.
Tang Yuxin carefully unwrapped the bandages, and while Mr. Huang appeared calm, only he knew how tightly he was gripping the blanket next to him. Yet, like everyone else, he kept his eyes glued to his own legs, which seemed to have somehow become those of another person.
