Chapter 80 Sudden Opportunity
Chapter 80: Chapter 80 Sudden Opportunity
"Sir, let me call with my own number," Mr. Henderson said, unable to watch Rafael spam the innocent, clueless girl any longer. He had been standing there for the past ten minutes, watching his boss dial the same number over and over again, each time with the same result. Straight to voicemail. Every single time.
He was not surprised. If someone called him that many times, he would have blocked the number too. He would have blocked the person and reported them for harassment without a second thought.
Rafael looked up from his phone, his eyes wide, his mouth open. His dark hair was messier than usual from running his hands through it in frustration. His tattoos seemed to pulse with his agitation, the intricate designs shifting with every movement of his arms.
"Oh, shoot!" Rafael exclaimed, his voice laced with sudden realization. "Why did you not suggest this before? I have been calling her for days! Days! And she never picks up! I thought she was ignoring me! I thought she hated me! I thought—"
Mr. Henderson raised his hand, stopping the flood of words with a single, calm gesture. His face was patient but his eyes held the weary expression of a man who had seen too much over the years.
"Sir, you called her seventeen times in the past two days. Seventeen. If I were her, I would have blocked you after the third call."
Rafael blinked, his expression shifting from excitement to sheepish realization. "Seventeen?"
"Yes, sir. Seventeen. I counted."
Rafael rubbed the back of his neck, a guilty look crossing his face. "That is... a lot."
"Yes, sir. It is."
Rafael sighed, running his hand through his already messy hair. "I did not realize I was calling that many times. I just wanted to reach her. To give her a chance. To—"
"I know, sir. You have explained. Several times. Which is why I am calling with my own number."
Mr. Henderson pulled out his phone and dialed.
Rafael leaned forward, his eyes fixed on the phone, his hands clasped together like he was praying to every god he could think of. His leg bounced with nervous energy.
Meanwhile, Daisy was feeling cheerful.
She had woken up early, the morning light streaming through her small window and painting warm stripes across her faded quilt. Her knees were still sore but healing. The bandages had been changed, and the scrapes were starting to scab over. She had eaten a small breakfast in her room, made with her own kettle and her own supplies. The sun was warm, the sky was blue, and she was preparing to go out.
She was just about to leave when her phone rang.
An unknown number.
Daisy hesitated.
She had been getting a lot of unknown calls lately. She had blocked one number already, the one that had called her over and over again. She had told Annie about it. Annie had told her to be careful. To never pick up unknown numbers.
But this was different.
For some reason, she felt like picking up. A strange intuition tugged at her, telling her that this call was important.
She answered.
"Am I speaking to Daisy Winter?" a voice said. It was an old, mature voice. Calm, professional and kind.
Daisy did not speak. She could not.
The person on the other end waited. Then he spoke again.
"Ma’am, I know you are mute. If you can hear me, shake something. Tap something. Anything."
Daisy tapped the table beside her. Two quick taps.
The voice on the other end responded immediately. "I heard it, ma’am. I got it. My name is Mr. Henderson. I am the manager of Kuursh Pharma Limited. I just received your job application and I was wondering if you are free to give an interview tomorrow. I will send the whole detail to your email."
Daisy’s eyes widened.
Her heart stopped.
She stared at the phone, her mouth open, her hands trembling. Her mind raced, struggling to process what she had just heard.
A job interview. An actual job interview. Someone had actually seen her application. Someone had actually read her resume. Someone was actually interested in her.
"I know this is sudden," Mr. Henderson continued, his voice warm and reassuring. "But your qualifications are impressive. Your degree in perfumery, your grade jumping achievements, your skills. We would like to meet you in person and discuss how you can contribute to our company."
Daisy pressed her hand to her chest. Her heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her throat.
"If you agree," Mr. Henderson said, "tap the table twice again."
Daisy tapped twice.
"Excellent. I will send you the details by email. The interview will be tomorrow at 10 AM. Please arrive on time. And ma’am?"
Daisy waited.
"I look forward to meeting you."
He said a few more words, professional and polite and then he hung up.
Daisy stared at the screen.
The call had ended.
She had a job interview.
She had a job interview.
She had a job interview!
She clapped her hands over her mouth, her eyes wide, her shoulders shaking. She wanted to scream. She wanted to laugh. She wanted to jump up and down and dance around the room. She wanted to call Annie and tell her the news. She wanted to tell the whole world.
She did not do any of that. She just sat there, frozen, her heart pounding, her eyes shining with tears of joy. A single tear escaped and rolled down her cheek.
Back in the office, Rafael was practically vibrating with excitement.
"Oh, you are so good, Mr. Henderson!" Rafael exclaimed. He threw his arms around the older man and hugged him tightly, squeezing him like a long-lost brother. "You are the best! The absolute best! I could kiss you!"
Before Mr. Henderson could react, Rafael planted a kiss on his oily cheek.
Mr. Henderson froze.
His face went pale, then red, and then pale again. His eyes widened in horror.
He pushed Rafael away, his hands firm and decisive, his expression one of utter disbelief.
"Sir," Mr. Henderson said, his voice strained, "please do not do that ever again."
Rafael grinned, completely unrepentant, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "You are my favorite employee. My absolute favorite. I am giving you a raise. A big raise. A massive raise. You can buy a new car. A house. A yacht. Anything you want."
Mr. Henderson straightened his tie, his expression carefully neutral, though a hint of exasperation flickered in his eyes. "I do not want a raise, sir. I want to continue doing my job without being kissed on the cheek."
"Fine. No more kisses. But you are still the best."
Mr. Henderson sighed, the sound long and weary. He had been working for Rafael for years. He had seen him do many strange things. But this was a new level of strange.
