Chapter 128 What’s going on with you?
Chapter 128: Chapter 128 What’s going on with you?
"No, she’s mute," Cedric said with a smirk, leaning back in his chair. "Even if I wanted to fall in love with her, she wouldn’t even be able to say my name."
His voice was casual, dismissive, the way he always spoke about Daisy. But as the words left his mouth, something strange happened. His heart felt uncomfortable, as if a needle had pierced through it. A sharp, unexpected piercing that made his chest tighten.
He ignored it.
"Hahaha, true," Jessica laughed carelessly, throwing her head back. "If you ever loved her and if you had sex with her, she wouldn’t even be able to moan out your name. What’s the point of a woman who can’t even make a sound in bed?"
She laughed again, clearly amused by her own words.
But she didn’t notice.
She didn’t notice the way Cedric’s expression stiffened. The way his blue eyes grew distant. The way his jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
Because in that moment, his mind wandered somewhere else entirely.
He imagined cornering Daisy on her small bed. That tiny, cramped room with its old furniture. He imagined her looking up at him with those big, dark eyes. Eyes that held fear, yes..but also trust.
He imagined her breath catching as he leaned closer. The way her chest would rise and fall faster. The way her fingers would curl into the sheets beneath her.
She wouldn’t be able to say anything. Of course not. She couldn’t speak. But her eyes would say everything. Her eyes always said everything. Wide, vulnerable and full of unspoken words that he had never bothered to read.
He imagined her closing her eyes slowly, as if she had decided to trust him. Her lashes would flutter against her cheeks. Her lips would part slightly and then she would let him get closer..
The more he imagined it, the more heated his eyes became.
A strange warmth spread through his body. His breathing became slightly uneven. His hands curled into fists on his desk.
He saw her face so clearly in his mind. Those delicate features. That soft, pale skin. The way her caramel hair would spread across the pillow. The way she would look up at him without fear, without hesitation.
What would she look like if she trusted him completely?
The thought sent a jolt through him.
Jessica noticed the heat in his eyes, the way his pupils had dilated. A satisfied smirk spread across her face.
She thought he was feeling hot because of her.
She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a husky whisper.
"You’re thinking about me, right? How you will feel inside me, hmmmm?"
Cedric blinked.
Reality came crashing back.
Jessica was sitting on his lap, her arms around his neck, her red hair falling over her shoulders.
Not Daisy.
He looked at Jessica.
"...What?"
Jessica laughed, running a finger along his jawline. "I said, you’re thinking about me."
She pressed closer. "Aren’t you?"
Cedric opened his mouth.
He wanted to say yes. He should have said yes. That was the easy answer. The expected answer.
But the words wouldn’t come. Because he hadn’t been thinking about her.
He had been thinking about Daisy.
The realization hit him like a cold wave. His expression shifted, the heat in his eyes fading.
Jessica noticed the change. Her smile faltered for just a moment.
"Cedric?"
"I have work," he said abruptly.
He gently pushed her off his lap and stood up, walking toward the window.
Jessica stared at his back, her eyes narrowing.
"...What’s going on with you?"
"Nothing."
"Cedric."
He didn’t turn around.
Jessica stood up, smoothing her dress. Her voice was calm but there was a hint of sharpness to it.
"You’re acting strange."
"I’m just tired."
"Tired?"
She laughed but it was colder this time.
"You’ve never used that excuse with me before."
Cedric finally turned to face her. His expression was unreadable.
"I’ll call you later."
Jessica stared at him for a long moment.
Then she smiled. It was a calculated smile, one that didn’t reach her eyes.
"Fine."
Jessica had just reached the office door when she felt a firm arm wrap around her waist from behind.
She paused. A pleased smile slowly spread across her lips. She didn’t turn around immediately, letting the moment stretch, enjoying the feel of his arms around her.
Cedric rested his chin lightly against her shoulder, his voice lower than before.
"Sorry, baby. I got distracted."
His embrace tightened ever so slightly before he brushed a brief kiss against the side of her neck. The touch was light, almost gentle, a stark contrast to the coldness he had shown just moments ago.
"Let me make it up to you."
Jessica’s smile widened immediately.
"Oh?"
Cedric turned her gently until she was facing him. His blue eyes met hers, calm and composed.
"Let’s have dinner together." He looked into her eyes. "At Jafer’s Romani Restaurant. Your favorite."
Jessica’s eyes lit up. A moment ago she had been convinced something was wrong with him. Now, hearing those words, her earlier doubts melted away like ice under the sun.
She looped her arms around his neck again, unable to hide her excitement. "Really? You remembered?"
Cedric nodded. "Of course."
Jessica grinned triumphantly. She knew it. Whatever had distracted him before, it couldn’t possibly compare to her. It never could. She was Jessica. She was the one he loved, the one he chose, the one he kept coming back to.
She leaned forward and kissed his cheek, leaving a faint trace of her lipstick. "I forgive you."
A faint smile appeared on Cedric’s face. "Good."
He picked up his car keys from the desk. "Let’s go."
Jessica happily slipped her hand into his arm, her expensive heels clicking against the marble floor as they walked out of the office together. Her red hair swayed with each step, and she pressed herself close to him, savoring the feel of his warmth.
Neither of them spoke.
Jessica was already looking forward to dinner. She imagined the candlelight, the wine, the way Cedric would look at her across the table. She imagined him reaching for her hand, whispering sweet things, making her feel like the only woman in the world, while he would talk about how much he hated Daisy.
