Chapter 129: All Hail the God of Onions | Gacha Bonus
They’re actively, collectively pretending not to look while also bowing their heads like I’m the Pope and they’re hoping for a bite-free audience. Not one of them makes a move or blinks or even breathes loudly. It’s a wall of awkward, terrified reverence. Even the cocktail girls have the "don’t make eye contact, or we die" look.
The closest blackjack dealer actually shakes as I pass. He’s a shaved-head, ex-military kind of guy, probably bench-presses small cars for fun. But his eyes fix on my scales, and the muscle in his jaw goes tight, like he’s prepping for one last stand before the inevitable. The two rat girls running the roulette wheel bow together, synchronised like they’ve rehearsed this for every changing of the mob head. One of them is trembling so hard the entire table rattles.
The slot machine tech, a tiny human dude not even out of high school, just straight-up drops his tools and kneels on the carpet, hands up like I’m about to deliver the final judgment. He stays that way the whole time I’m in his line of sight.
Slightly to the left, two more human staffers have written "welcome new owner" in dry-erase marker across a whiteboard, but so shakily that "owner" looks more like "onion." I’m not sure if it’s fear or genuine respect but either way, I am now the God of Onions to these people.
The slither to the front door goes on forever, like a parade route where all the floats are just different flavors of existential crisis. By the time I reach the velvet ropes, the entire casino is locked in a trance, waiting for me to say or do something terrifying or brilliant or both. The power trip is undeniable. So is the sour heat that coils in my gut. I didn’t sign up to be Emperor of Onion’s and Minimum Wage Trauma Victims.
But I make it to the entrance without eating anyone, which feels like personal growth.
I keep my head high anyway, hood flared just enough to look intimidating and not like I’m internally screaming, which I am, a little.
Hana falls into step beside me, unbothered as always.
"This way, young lord," she says, gesturing toward the main doors with the kind of ease that makes me think she’s made this exact trip a hundred times before, just never with someone who has actual scales.
The doors open onto the street and the cold night air hits my scales, and for a second, just a second, I let myself believe today is over.
It is not over. I can already feel it not being over, but I’m going home first, and everyone else’s problems can wait until tomorrow.
The car ride back is a blur of neon and Hana humming something under her breath, and by the time we pull up to the tower, I’m just about ready to shed my skin from exhaustion alone.
The elevator ride up feels like it takes a year. I keep replaying the casino floor in my head, all that noise, all those people who wanted a piece of me one way or another, chips sliding and voices shouting and some idiot in a suit trying to get me to co-sign a debt I didn’t even understand the terms of. My hood is still half flared out of pure habit by the time the doors open on the penthouse floor.
Then I slither inside, and the door clicks shut behind me, and it’s just quiet. No shouting, no sirens somewhere off in the dark, no smell of spilled liquor and desperation. Just cool air and the soft hum of the city far below the windows, muffled like it’s happening to someone else.
I make my way down the hall toward the bedroom, and the second I nudge the door open with my snout, all that tension in my coils just melts right out of me.
They’re both asleep.
One of them is curled up on her side with the blanket kicked half off, hair a mess across the pillow, one hand tucked under her cheek like a kid. The other is sprawled out on her back, arm thrown over her eyes like she fell asleep mid-complaint about the light, mouth open just enough to let out this tiny little snore that is, against every instinct I have as an apex predator, extremely cute.
[System: you’re not an apex predator; you’re a soft cock.]
What does that make you then?
[System: a legend.]
They look soft and warm, completely unbothered by the fact that a bulletproof twizzler is about to slither into bed with them, which, if I think about it too hard, is either a testament to how much they trust me or how little self-preservation they have left after being bonded to me. Probably both.
I don’t think about it too hard; I don’t think i can think anymore tonight regardless.
Old Mate you said past 12 I’d turn into my original form?
[System: Oh, I was lying; just fuck with you. I liked the idea that you were like Cinderella.]
Ah, well it worked, scared me.
[System: good! Imagine if you did turn back into your original form, haha, that would be terrible. I was more upset that you rolled the luck skill, i wanted you to bottom out Hana.]
I glide up onto the mattress, careful not to jostle either of them too much, and curl my body between them like some overgrown, scaly body pillow. My hood folds flat against my upper coils, no need to look tough in here.
My tail hooks lazily around the bedpost just to keep from sliding off, and I let my head rest right between the two of them, tongue flicking out once to catch their scent, warm and familiar and mine.
One of them mumbles something in her sleep and shifts closer, tucking her hand against my coils like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
Huh.
