Chapter 512 - 511: Bluffing
Chapter 512: Chapter 511: Bluffing
Nathan Foster looked over and saw Chester Lynch walking towards them.
"Why are you still up so late?" Nathan asked casually.
"Couldn’t sleep, just went for a walk. Didn’t expect Mr. Foster to be up as well," Chester said as he walked up to Nathan.
Nathan let out a soft "hmm" and continued to watch the two people sitting on the grass in front of him.
Chester followed Nathan’s gaze, and after a moment, he chuckled.
Nathan turned his head to look at him just as Chester pointed to the spot where the two people were sitting.
"Uncle, it was right there, the second day after school started. South and I couldn’t sleep, so we went for a walk and ended up sitting right there. But then we were spotted by campus patrol and had to run to the nearby woods to shake them off. It’s kind of funny when you think about it."
Nathan’s gaze darkened as he listened to Chester, much like the night around them.
"Funny, is it?"
Nathan’s voice was cold, whereas Chester seemed not to hear it at all.
"Quite funny. There were many couples around us, but they insisted on chasing just the two of us. We ended up surrounded. At the time, she was wearing pajamas, with no makeup. I had no choice but to hold her face close to me, so no one would see her. Thinking back, if anyone had seen South and exposed her identity, it would have been really bad."
As Chester finished, his gaze returned to Nathan.
"Mr. Foster, you seem unhappy?"
"Should I be happy?" Nathan’s hands were in his pockets, and his gaze was sharper than before as he looked at Chester.
Chester smiled slightly and spoke:
"Mr. Foster, I’ve always known South’s identity. It was I who switched the dorm room. I’m pursuing her. The Foster and Lynch Families have been close for generations. If I were with South, shouldn’t you be happy? I think Sir Foster would be pleased to know; it would fulfill his long-held wishes."
Back in the day, Sir Foster had tried to matchmake Stella Foster and Chester Lynch’s uncle, though they never got together, leaving a sense of regret.
Nathan’s earlier anger dissipated into smoke and vanished.
Nathan was calm now, saying lightly:
"In military terms, there’s a phrase called ’bluffing.’
At this point, a small bug landed on Nathan’s shoulder. He flicked it off and smiled, continuing:
"The essence of bluffing lies in the word ’bluff.’ What is bluffing? It’s a lack of confidence, a lack of assurance. That’s why you need to make a show, to cover up that lack. You want to pursue her? Fine, I’ll be watching."
After speaking, Nathan turned and walked away.
Chester listened to Nathan’s words, sensing the obvious disdain in them, as if he didn’t even consider him a contender.
Chester turned to watch his retreating figure and suddenly spoke:
"Mr. Foster, the two of you can’t be together."
Nathan stopped in his tracks and turned back to look at Chester.
Nathan knew that it was likely the first night he returned, when he brought South to the field, that Chester had seen them.
"Whether we can be together or not isn’t for you to decide."
Nathan said this and then left the field.
When Nathan reached the door of the room, he saw the light was still on inside. He wondered whether South was asleep.
Nathan took a deep breath and suddenly felt like laughing.
