Legendary Beast Tamer: Every Beast I Raise Makes Me Stronger

Chapter 122: HER FIRST WORD

Chapter 122: HER FIRST WORD

Cinder stopped at the tree line, where the first small pines rose through the warm ground.

Aiden could not ride any further. He was not going to say so.

Cinder said it for him.

She found a hollow sheltered from the wind and lowered herself onto the ground. There was still enough daylight to see, but she did not get up.

You decided I’m finished for today.

Fine. I guess you know me better than I do.

He slid off her back.

What?

His legs took none of his weight, and he fell to the ground.

Nyx shadow stepped from his shoulder before he hit the ground, emerging in front of him.

It let out a small sound he understood as a laugh.

Cinder rubbed a paw against the ground, telling him to rest closer to her and that she’d been right.

Miasma had moved beside him. She put a foot on his leg, looking up at him.

"I’m fine. Thank you for worrying, Miasma."

He had never sat a mount in his life. Lamplighters walked.

A full day clinging to the back of a giant wolf, with no way to hold on except his legs, had left his thighs and lower back aching. Ninety years of lifespan hadn’t done a thing about it.

Nobody writes that part down.

He sat down where he landed, against her flank.

The others came in around them the same as every night on the road.

Nyx into the dark that was gathering. Miasma onto a warm stone. The cat onto Cinder’s back.

Aiden talked to them.

He always did, but after everything that had just happened, he found himself talking to Cinder more.

She had always listened to every word he said and never asked him to stop.

Months of telling my whole life to something that can’t tell it back.

Cheapest confessor a man ever had.

"I’d have given all of my years," he said. Quiet. "Up there. Every year I had. Every year I didn’t have. I’d have poured myself down to nothing for you without thinking twice."

Her fire moved against his back.

"That’s not normal. A man’s supposed to have something in him that says stop." He watched the dark come down between the pines. "I think the lung illness took mine on Sewer Row."

He said it lightly. That was how he said everything that would have broken him to say straight.

"So don’t do that again. Don’t decide for me that the price is too high."

He rested his head against her side.

"If it comes up a year short, I’ll still pay it."

Cinder snapped her head to within an inch of his face. Tears filled her eyes.

Before he could say anything, she rose and stepped back.

Fire erupted around her body. It gathered inward. It pulled in on itself and started looking for a smaller shape.

An upright one.

Aiden went very still. Nyx hid behind his back.

Even Miasma let her spines fall limply at her side, watching with an expression he had never seen on her face.

The fire drew in around her shape, condensed, and held.

The fire vanished at once.

Standing on the warm ground where the Solari Blaze Dancer had been was a woman.

Tall. Lean and strong, with the build of a soldier. Red hair with ember-bright tips, moving when she moved.

A long burn scar ran down one forearm.

Where the mane of fire had run along her spine, hair fell down her back.

Heat came off her, steady and controlled. She was holding it in on purpose.

And her eyes were fixed on Aiden.

Amber, with orange burning around the pupils. The same eyes he had known for months, now looking at him from a woman’s face.

She was beautiful. The thought came to him before he could stop it.

Aiden did not move. He didn’t know what to do or say. His thoughts had stopped forming. He couldn’t understand what he was seeing.

Miasma had frozen on her stone. Nyx had gone flat in the dark and stayed there.

The cat had fallen when the fire took a new shape and did not move at all.

It looked up at the burning woman and recognized her. Then it put a disappointed paw on its head when it couldn’t find its favorite spot.

The woman looked at Aiden for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

Her voice was rough and low. She was still learning how to speak.

"Aiden."

His name.

Her first word.

He had been a great many things nobody bothered to name. A sick boy on Sewer Row. A failed tamer who scored zero on the Academy array. A lamplighter with his name struck from a House ledger. A man not worth the boot it would take to step on him.

And he had spent months narrating his whole life to beasts who couldn’t answer, because they couldn’t answer, because that was safe.

Something in his chest came apart.

"Yeah," he managed. His voice was nothing. "Yeah. That’s me."

He tried for the joke and it came out wrecked.

"That’s unfortunate. I’ve said some very embarrassing things around you."

She stared at him. The corner of her lips rose slightly, then stopped, as if she didn’t know how to laugh yet.

Then she spoke.

"No more years."

Aiden stopped breathing. She had changed form to say these words.

He got his hand flat on the ground so it would stop shaking.

"That’s not your call," he said. "It was never your—"

"No more."

She did not say it louder. She did not need to.

"No more." She pointed at his chest. "You. I keep."

Aiden sat in a hollow at the tree line and could not find anything to say to that.

Then fire engulfed her human shape. Her body poured back into the wolf. She came down onto four legs.

The eyes stayed hers even after the fire went out.

The Solari Blaze Dancer lay in the hollow where the woman had stood, and she was not tired.

That cost you nothing.

You could put it back on right now if you wanted. You just don’t want to.

You said your piece, and you went back to being big and warm for the night.

The cat would declare its love if it could.

He put his hand on her head.

"Okay," he said. He did not promise. She would know if he lied. "I heard you. I heard you."

The system appeared in his vision the moment he stopped moving.

He sat with Cinder in the dark for a long time, until she fell asleep.

Across from him, Miasma watched Cinder. Her green eyes were brighter than Aiden had ever seen them.

Nyx didn’t sleep. It stood over Cinder’s head, nudging her nose as if it would make her transform again.

Eventually, he stopped staring at her and started thinking about what her new form meant.

Whatever it is, however she got it, nobody can know she has an avatar form.

Not the proctors. Not the House. Not a soul.

He thought about the Academy corridors and the men who filled them.

A Tier Three is a beast countries fight over. A Tier Three that stands up and says your name is something every kingdom would want to take apart to find out how.

Every tamer I’ve ever met would give their whole standing to own something that can do that. Every House would spend a decade’s income.

Vane’s men were already downhill with the smaller story: a dead wolf that turned into a beast with a mane of fire.

They don’t know half of it.

And the half they don’t know is the half that gets us both caged for good.

He was taking her west. Toward a city that had struck him off one book, and a hall full of proctors he had to walk into before a clerk struck him off another.

The one place I’m required to go. Carrying the one thing that can never be seen there.

He looked at the sleeping Cinder beside him.

"We’re going to have to act as if nothing happened," he told her. "I’m terrible at that."
