Chapter 56 | Mira Loves Eating Noodles
Chapter 56: Chapter 56 | Mira Loves Eating Noodles
Kai looked at her.
"The accessible seating," she said. "You called ahead."
"Yes," Kai said.
She looked at the wall.
"Most places," she said. "When you call ahead. They put the accessible table near the service exit. Or the kitchen." She paused. "This one was in the corner with the glass view."
"I noticed," Kai said.
"The Braille menu," she said.
"You noticed that too," he said.
"Yes." She looked at the hallway. "Did you request it."
"When I made the reservation," Kai said. "I wasn’t sure if they’d have one. They did."
Shira was quiet for a moment.
"Mira liked the noodles," she said. To no one in particular.
"I know," Kai said. "She finished the bowl."
"She never finishes bowls outside."
"She finished that one."
Shira looked at the wall.
"Good," she said.
She went to her room.
Kai sat on the couch.
’Good.’ Same word as Thursday. Same flatness. Same weight inside it.
He pressed his palm to the cushion.
Both rhythms. Home. Settled.
The system chimed.
『 INVESTMENT RETURN — PUBLIC OUTING. 』
『 FINANCIAL BREAKDOWN: 』 『 Restaurant booking — rooftop, accessible seating, Braille menu: 4,200 coins. 』 『 Transportation — accessible cab, round trip: 840 coins. 』 『 Meal — three servings: 2,100 coins. 』 『 Total invested: 7,140 coins → ×500 = 3,570,000 coins returned. 』
『 Previous account balance: 377,065,847 coins. 』 『 Current account balance: 380,635,847 coins. 』
『 NON-FINANCIAL RETURNS: 』 『 Protection event registered. Host intervened verbally on behalf of both wives in a public setting. No Gift. No authority. Just the specific kind of calm that makes people recalculate. 』 『 Sincerity rating: ABSOLUTE. 』 『 Gale Strike Echo — precision upgrade. Rotation initiation time reduced by 0.2 seconds. 』 『 Resonance Echo — Level 1.5 advancing. Emotional frequency detection added. Host can now detect when vocal cord activation is involuntary versus deliberate. 』
『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 1.9 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 1.9 / 10. 』
『 The system notes: 』 『 Mira Elys read her own assessment record from the Vanguard archive. 』 『 Host told her about it at the restaurant. 』 『 She has not had access to her own records since the incident. Her family removed her from the official registry. Her assessment history was not transferred. 』 『 She did not know the top-ten-percent result was still on record somewhere. 』 『 She finished the bowl. The system notes this separately because it has not happened before. 』 『 Host does not know what Mira Elys did in her room for forty minutes after returning home. 』 『 The system does. 』 『 The system is not going to say. 』 『 Some things are hers. 』
Kai read the last four lines.
He read them again.
He put the phone down.
He pressed both palms flat on the cushion.
’Some things are hers,’ he thought.
He sat with that.
Through the wall — Shira’s room. The deliberate quality, the small movements. But underneath it tonight something that felt different from the usual. Lighter. Like something that had been held a long time had been set down for a moment without deciding to.
Through Mira’s door — still. No audio reader yet. Just stillness.
Then, forty-seven minutes after they got home — the Resonance Echo caught it.
Not the Gift frequency.
Something else.
Her voice. At fourteen percent function. Making a shape that was not a hum and not a word but was somewhere between them. Held for eleven seconds. The longest yet.
She stopped.
Silence.
Then and this was new , she started again. But differently. Softer. Like she had decided something in the silence and was trying the decision out.
Nine seconds.
She stopped herself.
Kai sat on the couch with both palms flat and felt it through the wall.
’Eleven seconds,’ he thought. ’Then nine. You stopped yourself twice but you started again twice.’
’Both times you started again.’
He closed his eyes.
He thought about Mira at the restaurant finishing the bowl.
He thought about Shira’s hand on the table, finger pressing down. Not practicing. Just there.
He thought about two women in the back of a cab arguing about a noodle shop like it was the most important dispute that had ever needed resolving.
He thought: ’Next week. Green awning. East side of the commercial block.’
’I’ll call ahead.’
He fell asleep with both palms on the cushion and both rhythms under his hands.
—---
Monday.
Five days until the hearing.
Kai was up at five. Both rhythms present. He made tea. Started the specialty rotation. The morning moved through its rhythm the way mornings did now.
Breakfast was quiet. Good quiet.
Mira came out with her hair down and the whiteboard uncapped before she even sat.
The board came up immediately.
The noodle shop. Did you call.
"It’s Monday morning," Kai said.
Did you call.
"They don’t open until nine."
It’s nine-oh-three.
Kai looked at the clock.
It was nine-oh-three.
’She’s been waiting since nine,’ he thought.
He picked up his phone and called.
Green awning, east commercial block. He confirmed the reservation while Mira sat across the table eating her porridge with the particular expression of someone supervising an important task.
He put the phone down.
"Sunday," he said. "Noon. Accessible seating."
The board: Braille menu.
"I asked."
And.
"They’re getting one printed."
She lowered the board and ate.
Shira had been looking at her bowl for the past minute with the expression she used when she was trying not to look like she was paying attention to something.
"The fermented vegetable side," she said. To her bowl. "If the noodle shop has it."
"I’ll ask when we get there," Kai said.
She picked up her spoon.
Mira’s board appeared one more time.
She’s been thinking about that side dish since yesterday.
"Mira," Shira said.
Since the cab.
"Eat your breakfast."
The board went down. Mira ate with great innocence.
Kai drank his tea.
’Good morning,’ he thought. ’This is a good morning.’
==========
He spent the first part of the morning on dungeon research.
The licensing board had sent a preliminary file through — the same file Han Dori had forwarded, with the B-rank provisional review notation. Kai read it twice. C-rank provisional license, effective backdated, with the board’s recommendation for B-rank assessment sitting in the attached notes like something that hadn’t been decided yet.
He wrote in the notebook: B-rank assessment. Six-month evaluation. Keep running.
