Chapter 63: Don’t Make Me Tie You to the Bed!
"Rong Shuyan..." she called his name in a desperate tone.
"There is enough money for you to live comfortably for the rest of your life," he continued, not giving her a chance to stop him. "Even if you never receive another tael from the Imperial Family, you will never have to depend on anyone."
Lin Xueyi stared at him in silence.
For some reason, the more calmly he arranged her future, the harder it became for her to breathe.
It was as though he was making sure she would have everything she needed after he was gone.
Everything except him.
Her fingers slowly tightened around the blanket. She truly hated the way he spoke about it so easily, as if leaving her behind was nothing more than another problem he needed to solve before he died.
"I don’t want your money," Lin Xueyi finally said.
She tried to ignore the headache still lingering in her head and leaned forward to take Rong Shuyan’s hand. "I just want you to go home with me."
[Besides, isn’t Yanyan the main character of this story? If he dies, won’t the whole world collapse?] Lin Xueyi wondered.
[But wait... if he really is the main character, shouldn’t he have some kind of main character halo?!]
However, after thinking about it more carefully, Lin Xueyi realized that Rise of the Sixth Prince was indeed the kind of story where the main character survived.
The problem was that he had to go through hell first.
[Even if he doesn’t die on the battlefield, he might end up being the one who gets his eyes gouged out instead!]
Just thinking about it made Lin Xueyi’s expression turn serious. "Your Highness, let’s just run away!"
Rong Shuyan looked at her and Lin Xueyi stared back at him with complete seriousness, clearly not joking.
"We can steal a lot of expensive jade and other valuable things from the manor and sell them," she said quickly, already making plans in her head. "Money might be tight, and we probably won’t be able to afford servants or cooks, but don’t worry. I can cook!"
[No, actually, I can’t cook! I always eat instant noodles or mantou!]
Lin Xueyi immediately pushed that thought aside. At least eating mantou every day was still better than watching Rong Shuyan lose his eyes.
Across from her, Rong Shuyan let out a heavy sigh. "Xueyi, the best way for you to survive is—"
"It’s impossible for me to survive on my own!" Lin Xueyi quickly cut him off. "My Father will definitely pressure me to clear Lin Chenghao of all the accusations against him, and if that happens, Lin Chenghao will definitely come after me!"
[Oh, who cares about Lin Chenghao! I just want Yanyan to be safe with me! I can even start planning our escape right now!]
After all, Lin Xueyi had read the entire book. Although there were many small details she sometimes forgot, she still remembered the important parts of the story quite well.
She could even find someone who could forge new identities for them while they were on the run.
[Although it’ll be difficult for Yanyan to disguise himself because he uses a wheelchair...] Her eyes quietly moved toward Rong Shuyan’s legs. [But in the book, he could use crutches instead.]
Using crutches was far from ideal for Rong Shuyan, but it was still better than nothing.
For a long moment, Rong Shuyan didn’t say anything. Meanwhile, Lin Xueyi was still holding his hand, her expression so serious that he knew she truly wanted to run away with him, even if it meant walking down a dangerous path with him.
However, after Rong Shuyan thought about it more carefully, perhaps leaving Lin Xueyi by herself wasn’t the right decision either.
She might know a lot about this world, but as someone from another world, it would still be difficult for her to survive here, especially since there would be many dangers waiting for her out there.
"Xueyi," Rong Shuyan finally said.
Lin Xueyi immediately looked at him.
"If things truly go wrong..." He paused for a moment before continuing, "then I will leave with you."
Lin Xueyi’s eyes widened. [He agreed?!]
"You mean it?" she asked enthusiastically.
Rong Shuyan nodded. "Yes."
Her face immediately brightened, but before she could get too excited, Rong Shuyan continued. "But only as our last choice."
The smile on her face disappeared just as quickly. "Why?"
"Because running away will not be as simple as you think." Rong Shuyan glanced down at their joined hands. "If we leave, the Imperial Court will search for us. We will have to avoid soldiers, officials, and anyone who might recognize us. We may not be able to stay in one place for long."
"And with my current condition..." Rong Shuyan continued calmly. "I cannot travel quickly."
Her eyes immediately moved toward his legs. Rong Shuyan’s condition was already bad enough even when he had proper medicine, servants, and a carriage.
Running away would be completely different.
They might have to travel through forests or mountains. There could be days when they had no proper place to sleep, and if someone found them, Rong Shuyan couldn’t simply jump onto a horse and escape.
[But if Yanyan in the book could do that, doesn’t that mean it isn’t impossible?] Lin Xueyi wondered.
However, before Lin Xueyi could think about it any further, Rong Shuyan spoke again. "I will be a burden to you if we really run away like that."
Oh.
He actually had a point.
Even in the book, when Rong Shuyan was on the run, he truly had to rely on Eunuch Shen and Physician Liu.
However, that was only possible because Eunuch Shen and Physician Liu had already gone through something that brought them closer. But that moment had not happened yet, so even Lin Xueyi wasn’t sure whether they would follow Rong Shuyan or not.
Therefore, it was only natural for him to think that he would become a burden to her.
Lin Xueyi thought about it for a while before finally nodding. "Alright then," she said reluctantly. "Running away will be our last choice."
Rong Shuyan gave a small nod.
"But you have to promise me something too!" Lin Xueyi said.
"What?" Rong Shuyan asked, tilting his head to the side.
"If things really become impossible, you can’t suddenly decide to send me away by myself," she stated.
Rong Shuyan was silent for a moment before answering, "I promise."
Only then did Lin Xueyi finally relax. [Good. At least we have a backup plan.]
Lin Xueyi was about to continue planning when she noticed the tired look on his face.
She suddenly remembered that Rong Shuyan had barely slept last night because he had stayed beside her while she had a fever.
"You should sleep too," she suggested.
Rong Shuyan shook his head. "I’m fine."
"No, you’re not!" Lin Xueyi protested.
"You barely slept last night because you were taking care of me," Lin Xueyi said. "And you’ve been dealing with military matters since this morning. You need to rest."
"There are still things I need to—"
"They can wait for a while!" Lin Xueyi shouted and before he could argue again, Lin Xueyi pointed toward the bed. "Now, sleep."
Rong Shuyan stared at her for a moment, but the thoughts running through her head made it difficult for him to refuse.
[Yanyan, don’t make me tie you to the bed just to make you sleep!] She spoke in her mind.
[Although... how am I supposed to tie him up?]
[Maybe I can use the blanket?]
Rong Shuyan’s eyes widened slightly when he heard that. He quickly shook his head before Lin Xueyi’s thoughts could become even stranger. "Fine. I will sleep for a while."
Not long after, Rong Shuyan moved his wheelchair closer to the bed and carefully shifted himself onto it. Lin Xueyi quickly reached out to help him, supporting his arm until he was properly settled.
Once he lay down, she pulled the blanket over him. "Sleep."
"I already said I would," Rong Shiyan said while letting out a heavy sigh.
"Then close your eyes," ordered Lin Xueyi.
Rong Shuyan gave her a helpless look before finally doing as she asked.
Lin Xueyi watched him for a while, making sure he wasn’t pretending.
[He really looks tired.]
The faint dark circles beneath his eyes were enough to make her feel guilty again.
After all, he had barely slept because he had spent most of the night watching over her.
She carefully lay down on her bed again as well. [Just two hours.]
[I’ll sleep for two hours too.]
Perhaps because both of them were already exhausted, the tent soon became quiet.
Almost exactly two hours later, a soldier came to inform them that General Zhou had returned.
By then, Rong Shuyan was already awake.
After making sure Lin Xueyi was feeling well enough, he allowed General Zhou to enter.
"Your Highness." General Zhou cupped his hands. "The birds are ready."
Rong Shuyan immediately became more alert. "Then, let’s do it."
