Chapter 88: The Death of a wang

Chapter 88: The Death of a wang

Deep within the shadowed valleys bordering the Crimson Nimbus Sect, hidden beneath a jagged cliff face, lay a secretive subterranean spirit cave.

The sanctuary was devoid of natural light. A few dim, blood-red spiritual lanterns hung along the damp stone walls. The air was foul with moss, stagnant water, and the metallic tang of scorched blood.

Deacon Wang sat cross-legged on a cracked meditation mat in the cavern’s center. His body was a ruin of what it had once been.

He was a man broken by the Heavenly Dao. His once lustrous black hair was now brittle and ashen white. His skin hung loosely over his bones, wrinkled and covered in dark, necrotic spots. His eyes, once sharp and commanding, were now sunken and bloodshot.

"Ugh..."

Wang coughed into a piece of white silk. When he pulled it away, it was stained with thick, viscous black sludge—the ruined remnants of his liquefied spiritual essence. The sight made his stomach churn with disgust and despair.

The pain in his Dantian was agonizing. When his Core Formation breakthrough had failed, the condensing golden core had shattered, sending volatile energy tearing through his meridians. His foundation was now a ruined, leaking vessel.

Every attempt to circulate Qi felt like his veins were being bathed in boiling acid. The agony was constant, unrelenting, a reminder of his catastrophic failure.

I must endure, he chanted in his mind, staring at the water clock in the corner. I only need to hold on until sunrise.

Drip... Drop...

The hour of the tiger was nearing its end. Dawn was approaching. Soon, his vengeance would be complete.

Wang’s cracked lips curled into a hideous smile. He had liquidated his entire fortune to purchase a premium assassination contract from the Blood Lotus Pavilion. Centuries of accumulated artifacts, spirit stones, and secret cultivation manuals—all gone.

But it was worth it. Revenge was worth everything.

He knew the rules perfectly. A premium contract guaranteed absolute death. The assassin was required to deliver the severed head to the client before sunrise. The Blood Lotus Pavilion had never failed a premium contract.

He imagined the door sliding open. He pictured Lady Yun tossing a blood-soaked box at his feet. He could almost see Lin Tian’s severed head inside, frozen in terror.

Once I have his head, I will send it to the Inner Sect Resource Hall, his thoughts grew manic. Let my treacherous wife, open the box. Let her see the fate of her little white face.

The thought of Madam Shen’s despair brought twisted pleasure to his ruined heart. She had betrayed him. She had used his son’s downfall to climb higher. Now she would pay.

Suddenly, the temperature plummeted. The blood-red flames flickered wildly, casting dancing shadows across the stone floor. Wang felt an inexplicable chill crawl up his spine.

He forced himself to stand, ignoring the tearing pain in his chest. His body screamed in protest, but he ignored it.

He looked toward the heavy profound-stone door. Beyond it were three layers of defensive arrays he had purchased from the Ghost Market. An Illusory Mist Array to confuse the mind. A Blood-Scent Warning Array to detect intruders. A Heavy-Earth Barricade Array to repel brute force.

None of the warning runes were glowing. There was no sound of arrays shattering. Everything seemed normal.

Yet the suffocating aura of shadows was leaking into the room. Wang’s instincts screamed that something was wrong.

"Lady Yun?" Wang called out, forcing a respectful smile onto his aged face. "Is that you, Mistress? I see my arrays did not hinder you. You truly live up to your legendary reputation."

He paused, his voice trembling with anticipation. "Did you bring the item? Did you bring the boy’s head?"

The heavy door did not explode. Instead, unlocking runes flared on its surface, and the door slid open silently. The arrays had been flawlessly bypassed by someone who knew their blind spots.

From the darkness beyond, a figure stepped into the dim red light. Wang’s smile froze. His eyes bulged. His pupils contracted to needlepoints.

It was not the Queen of the Ghost Market who entered.

It was a tall youth in pristine obsidian robes. His scarred face was set in absolute, predatory calm. His golden eyes looked at Wang not as a senior, but as one would look at a dying insect squirming in the dirt.

"Lin... Lin Tian?!" Wang shrieked, stumbling backward against the cold stone wall. His heart pounded with terror.

It was impossible. The boy was supposed to be a corpse. How was he standing here, completely unharmed, deep within Wang’s most secure safe house?

But the shock of Lin Tian’s appearance was overshadowed by a far more terrifying realization. As Lin Tian stepped fully into the cave, he no longer concealed his cultivation. The overwhelming pressure of a monstrous spiritual ocean descended upon the room.

Crack!

The sheer weight of spiritual pressure shattered the stone tiles beneath Lin Tian’s feet. Cracks spread across the floor like spiderwebs.

"Liquid Qi..." Wang whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. His Dao Heart fractured into a million pieces. "You stepped into Foundation Establishment?! How is this possible?!"

"You were merely at Qi Gathering days ago!" he shrieked, his voice cracking with disbelief. "How could you condense a liquid foundation so quickly?!"

Wang felt as if the heavens themselves were playing a cruel joke on him. He had sacrificed everything to form a Golden Core, only to fail. And this Outer Sect trash had effortlessly crossed the heavenly chasm into Foundation Establishment?

"The Heavenly Dao is vast," Lin Tian spoke, his voice a low baritone that shook dust from the ceiling. "Your narrow vision could never comprehend it."

"No! This is an illusion!" Wang roared, coughing black blood. He looked wildly into the tunnel behind Lin Tian. "Where is Lady Yun?! I paid the premium price! Three thousand spirit stones! She guaranteed your death!"

"You did pay a premium price," a sultry voice echoed from the shadows.

Lady Yun emerged from the darkness. Her skin-tight purple suit hugged her curves. Her silver-white hair cascaded down her back. The fatal frost that once plagued her was gone, replaced by radiant vitality.

Wang’s eyes lit with manic hope. "Lady Yun! Slay him! He is right in front of you! Kill this bastard! I will find a way to pay you double!"

Lady Yun did not draw her daggers. She walked gracefully to Lin Tian’s side. Under Wang’s horrified gaze, the untouchable Queen of the Ghost Market lowered her head and took a submissive step behind the youth.

"You... you..." Wang pointed a trembling finger at them. His mind simply could not process the scene. A Foundation Establishment cultivatore acting as a subservient vassal to a newly ascended youth?

"Thank you for your contribution, Deacon Wang," Lin Tian sneered, hands clasped behind his back. "If you hadn’t sent the Queen of Shadows to my doorstep, I might not have found the catalyst required to consolidate my foundation."

Wang’s eyes widened to the point of tearing. The ultimate truth crashed down upon him, crushing his soul. He hadn’t bought an assassination. He had delivered a cultivation vessel directly to his enemy.

He had engineered his own total destruction.

"Ahhhhh! Lin Tian! You devil! I curse you!" Wang screamed, his throat tearing. His voice echoed off the cavern walls, filled with pure, unadulterated rage.

He forcefully ignited the last remnants of his life force. His scorched meridians flared with chaotic red light. He intended to detonate his Dantian and drag them both down with him into oblivion.

Swish!

Lady Yun vanished.

Powered by the Abyssal Void-Shadow Empress Art, she merged completely with the shadows. No fluctuation of spiritual energy. No displacement of air. No sound whatsoever.

Before the chaotic red light could travel up his chest, a streak of abyssal darkness flashed across Wang’s neck.

He froze. His crazed expression locked in place. The red light extinguished like a snuffed candle.

A thin red line appeared across his throat. A second later, his head slid cleanly off his shoulders, tumbling to the floor with a dull thud. Dark blood erupted from his severed neck before his body collapsed backward.

Lady Yun materialized a few feet away, flicking a drop of blood off her dagger before sheathing it at her thigh. She immediately returned to her submissive position behind Lin Tian.

"A flawless strike," Lin Tian praised softly, his divine sense confirming that all traces of Wang’s life force had been permanently severed.

"It is only because the Sovereign’s art guided my hand," she replied softly, her eyes shining with devoted pleasure.

Lin Tian walked forward, looking down at the decapitated corpse with No pity,he raised his right hand.

The Primordial Yin-Yang Imperial Sutra flared in his Dantian. A cluster of golden Yang fire ignited in his palm. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed it onto the corpse.

FWOOSH!

The tyrannical fire consumed flesh, blood, and bones instantly. In less than ten breaths, the former half-step Core Formation expert was reduced to fine gray ash.

Lin Tian waved his sleeve. A gust of spiritual wind swept the ashes into the underground river outside, washing them away forever.

Deacon Wang was erased from the cycle of reincarnation. To the outside world, it would seem as if the injured Deacon had simply gone missing during his retreat.

"It is done," Lin Tian murmured, feeling clarity in his Dao Heart. The obstacles of the Outer Sect were swept clean.

He turned, his figure framed by dim red light. His gaze pierced through the rock, looking toward the towering peaks of the Inner Sect.

"Let us return, Yun," he commanded, a dark smile curling his lips. "The Inner Sect Promotion Tournament is about to begin. Madam Shen is waiting. It is time to show the elite geniuses what true power looks like."

"Yes, my Sovereign," Lady Yun bowed deeply, melting into Lin Tian’s shadow as they walked out of the dark cavern, ascending toward the apex of the cultivation world.
