Chapter 417:Home.

Chapter 417: 417:Home.

For a brief instant there was nothing except the strange sensation of distance collapsing around Atheline, and then cold evening air struck his face.

Stone appeared beneath his boots. The Dark Elven court surrounded them, more specifically, the palace teleportation grounds.

Guards reacted instantly.

"Your Majesties!"

The entire palace seemed to come alive within minutes.

Their return wasn’t treated like the conclusion of a diplomatic visit, it felt like the beginning of an emergency.

Atheline had barely crossed the first door when he noticed soldiers moving toward different sections of the palace.

Messages were being carried between administrative buildings, several officials had been summoned from their homes, and members of the royal intelligence network were entering and leaving through side entrances.

Klaith’s name seemed to be everywhere.

"Seal the northern gate records."

"Check everyone who departed during the last week."

"Search the librarian’s residence again."

"Someone inspect the archive passages."

"Where are the border reports?"

Atheline walked beside Lilith through the chaos, it was strange. Only hours earlier he’d watched another version of this palace collapsing beneath a war but now it was intact.

His eyes lingered on each familiar face longer than usual whenever they appeared. Nobody noticed except Lilith but she didn’t mention it.

Zelpher approached rapidly.

"Your Majesties."

"What have you found?"

She didn’t slow down.

Zelpher joined them.

"His residence has been searched. Most personal belongings remain there, which initially made it appear that he left unexpectedly, but we’ve found several inconsistencies."

Atheline looked toward him.

"Such as?"

"Documents are missing."

"What kind?"

"We don’t know."

Zelpher’s frustration was obvious.

"Klaith maintained his own catalogue system for some of the oldest records. We’ve compared the shelves against the central archive registry, but some records were never included in the general registry."

Lilith’s expression darkened.

"It’s really annoying that he was the person responsible for the registry."

"Exactly."

Atheline sighed.

"So the person we’re investigating was also responsible for recording whether the evidence we’re looking for existed."

"Unfortunately."

"Convenient."

Zelpher nodded.

"We’ve sealed his office, residence and every archive section he had direct authority over. Nobody enters without authorization."

"Good."

Lilith stopped.

"And Klaith himself?"

"No confirmed sightings."

"Border?"

"Alerted."

"Ports?"

"Alerted."

"Teleportation formations?"

"Locked down. Any nonessential outgoing teleportation now requires royal authorization."

She nodded.

"Keep it that way."

They entered the main administrative wing. The noble elder was already waiting and so were several senior councillors.

Atheline immediately knew there was a problem. Their expressions weren’t those of people bringing good news.

The Nobel elder stepped forward.

"Your Majesty, we need to discuss the wanted notice."

Lilith didn’t stop walking.

"No."

The councillor blinked.

"Your Majesty?"

"There’s nothing to discuss."

"The accusation is treason."

"Yes."

"Against Klaith."

Lilith stopped and slowly turned.

The corridor became quiet. The noble elder hesitated under her stare but continued.

"Klaith has served the royal archives for longer than some members of this council have been alive. His family has maintained historical records for generations. He has been trusted with documents that even senior nobles cannot access."

Atheline watched Lilith’s expression become colder with every sentence.

Another councillor stepped in.

"Nobody is saying he should be above investigation."

"Then we agree."

"But issuing a kingdom-wide wanted notice accusing him of treason before evidence has been presented to the council..."

"The evidence was presented to me."

Lilith’s voice silenced him.

The noble elder remained quiet. Unlike the others, he seemed more interested in watching Atheline.

The first councillor tried again.

"Your Majesty, with respect, the law..."

"I know the law."

"Then you know an accusation of treason against a royal official requires..."

"Do you know what else the law allows?"

The councillor stopped. She stepped closer.

"The Crown may issue an emergency arrest order against any individual reasonably suspected of acting against the survival of the kingdom."

"This isn’t an arrest order anymore. His name is being circulated as a traitor."

"Because I believe he’s a traitor."

Several councillors exchanged looks.

One finally spoke.

"Based on what?"

She stared at him.

"Information I cannot presently disclose."

That created exactly the reaction Atheline expected; murmurs spread. The noble elder raised a hand, silencing most of them.

"Your Majesty, you understand why that concerns them."

"I do."

"And?"

"I don’t care."

Silence.

Lilith’s newly comprehended Law of Darkness didn’t manifest physically, but Atheline could feel the change in the room anyway.

Her authority had always been formidable and now there was something underneath it, something deeper.

"If Klaith is innocent, he can return and answer my questions."

Nobody interrupted.

"If he’s innocent, he has nothing to fear from being brought before me alive."

Lilith’s eyes moved across every councillor.

"But he disappeared before we returned."

One councillor shook his head.

"That doesn’t prove treason."

"No." She nodded. "It doesn’t."

The councillor seemed relieved, then she continued.

"But I’m not withdrawing the order."

"Your Majesty..."

"And I’ll make something else very clear."

The corridor became completely silent.

"If anyone here intends to interfere with the search for Klaith, conceal information concerning his whereabouts, destroy records connected to him or use their position to obstruct the investigation, you will follow him onto the wanted list."

Several expressions changed immediately.

Her voice remained calm.

"I don’t care how old your family is. I don’t care how many years you’ve served. I don’t care how offended you are that someone you trusted is being investigated."

She looked directly at the councillor who had objected first.

"This concerns the survival of the kingdom."

Nobody spoke.

"Contest my decision if you wish."

Darkness briefly moved beneath Lilith’s feet.

"But understand what you’re contesting."

The councillors fell silent. Then, almost inevitably, several of them turned toward Atheline. He stared back at them.

One councillor cleared his throat.

"Your Majesty, perhaps you can provide some clarification."

He almost smiled.

They were hoping he would soften Lilith’s position. Hormally, that wasn’t entirely unreasonable, he was often more patient in council than she was but today wasn’t normal.

"Klaith is dangerous."

The councillors became still.

He continued.

"I support every order the Queen has issued."

The noble elder eyes narrowed slightly.

"You’ve personally seen evidence?"

Atheline thought about the Protector standing over a battlefield.

"Yes."

"Can you share it?"

"Not yet."

That caused more murmuring.

His expression hardened.

"I understand why you dislike that answer." He stepped forward. "But listen carefully. Until we understand what Klaith has been involved in, nobody approaches him casually."

One councillor frowned.

"He’s a librarian."

Atheline looked directly at him.

"Then if I’m wrong, you can laugh at me later." His voice became colder. "But if I’m right, treating him as an old librarian could get you killed."

Nobody argued after that and the orders remained.

By midnight, the Dark Elven Kingdom had entered a state of high alert.

Klaith’s description was distributed throughout the capital and then beyond it. Border settlements received instructions to report anyone matching him. Ports were searched. Teleportation formations were monitored. Intelligence agents were dispatched toward places Klaith had visited during the previous several decades.

The royal archives became one of the most heavily guarded places in the capital.

Every record Klaith had touched suddenly mattered. Every journey he’d taken mattered. Every person he’d corresponded with mattered.

The Protector’s activities were reopened for investigation from the beginning.

Atheline knew the chances of simply finding Klaith hiding inside some inn were almost nonexistent.

A man capable of concealing himself for this long wouldn’t make such an obvious mistake.

But forcing him into hiding still had value. He could no longer move openly through the kingdom, enter the palace as a trusted historian, access the archives without resistance, and, most importantly, they knew his face.

The alert didn’t remain inside Dark Elven territory for long.

By the following morning, neighbouring kingdoms had learned that the Dark Elven Crown had accused one of its oldest historians of treason.

Then the details spread farther.

A suspected connection to the Protector.

A royal lockdown.

Border searches.

Within another day, messages were moving between kingdoms across the Elven Continent, and reports had already reached the Human, Demonic and Beastmen continents.

Atheline watched it happen from the palace. He couldn’t help remembering the ruined throne room.

He understood now how easily one event could spread outward until nobody controlled what came afterward.

Which was why he and Lilith deliberately released only the necessary information. They needed answers before they gave the world more reasons to panic.

Two days after returning home, Atheline stood on one of the palace balconies overlooking the capital.

He could feel the thing inside him again, a faint pulse.

He closed his eyes and his elements responded. Wind came first, naturally, then the others. But beneath them was that presence he couldn’t identify. Not an element, at least, he didn’t think it was.

Something connected to the orb or the Unaspected Ruin, perhaps even something connected to the Supreme Sovereign.

Atheline opened his eyes.

"You’ve been standing there for an hour."

He glanced behind him.

Lilith approached.

"Have I?"

"Almost."

"I was thinking."

"That usually causes trouble."

"Supportive as always."

She stopped beside him. He looked at her.

Her Darkness Law was still new, yet the difference was enormous. Even when she wasn’t deliberately using it, her relationship with darkness had fundamentally changed.

Atheline felt something uncomfortable. It was not jealousy but urgency. She had moved forward.

Draco was already a Sovereign, the corruption was changing, Klaith was involved with something ancient, unnamed Gods potentially existed somewhere beyond their understanding, and Atheline was still Peak Mystic.

He was extremely strong by modern standards but perhaps no longer strong enough for what was coming.

"I’m leaving."
