How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World

Chapter 149: Little Ningning’s Fear

Chapter 149: Little Ningning’s Fear

To describe it, it is like he was walking down the street, minding his own business, and then a group of cops suddenly called him over because his face looked barely legal.

That kind of feeling.

Wei Chen looked at the little troublemaker, suspicious of the child’s tantrum about not wanting to go back.

“Do you perhaps know that if you go back now, you would get spanked by your Fourth Mama?”

The sentence struck the child’s heart like a piercing arrow. Her eyes welled up with tears that were about to fall. She turned toward Wei Chen and looked at him with large, adorable eyes, as if she were a child from a poverty-stricken orphanage or a child on a UNICEF poster.

“Chenchen… help me… I don’t want to get punished by Mama.” The child pleaded.

Wei Chen let out a long, tired sigh. “Haaaaa… didn’t I tell you to go back even before all this?” he continued with a shrug.

“It’s just a spanking, maybe a few more spankings because you’re quite naughty. But in the end, you’ll be fine. Trust me.” He tried to console the girl and make light of the situation.

After all, she had just snuck out of the house for a few hours. It was not that bad. Besides, she was a little girl. She would not get introduced to her dad’s belt, would she?

“You… you don’t understand… this time… it just won’t work that way. I’ll definitely get more than spankings. I… I might get thrown out of the palace, waaaahhh!” The little girl started to wail. She cried and let it all out.

“Come on, it’s not that bad, right? You just snuck out of your house for a few hours. If you’re so afraid, I’ll help talk to your mom and ask her to be more lenient.” He tried to console her once again.

“I… I… I don’t think that’ll help.” The girl shook her head.

“Now you’ve made me curious. What happened? What did you do other than sneaking out of your house?” Wei Chen grew suspicious. If this situation escalated, it might screw him over too.

The little girl did not say anything. She handed the artifact that looked like a tablet to Wei Chen. The tablet-like artifact displayed the news on its screen.

It was breaking news from the Underworld.

On the news, Wei Chen recognized the reporter who usually reported on the largest news channel in the Underworld.

“Breaking news. This is UNN, Underworld News Network. I am Wen Xiao.”

The popular reporter continued speaking as the screen changed to investigators examining a trail inside the Underworld Palace.

“In a shocking turn of events, the Princess of the Lord of Death has been kidnapped by unknown assailants. Authorities have declared martial law across the core territories, sealing off key portals and ley lines to trap any rogue factions and make escape nearly impossible for those involved.”

The scene changed again, showing enforcers breaking through the main gate of a steel fortress.

“This brazen act has already triggered a massive purge, wiping out over fifty percent of the rogue elements in the Underworld’s heartland in a single ruthless day.”

As the reporter continued, the scene shifted once more. Now it showed the furious Yan Rongjun walking out of a fortress that had been cleaved in half by her halberd, blood splattered all over her leather armor.

“Sources close to the investigation confirm that the former Supreme General of the Underworld, now the Lord of Death’s second wife, Lady Yan Rongjun, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the initial response, leveraging her unparalleled might to crush the insurgents.”

“Investigators and enforcers are working around the clock, combing through the labyrinthine catacombs and forbidden areas to identify the kidnappers and locate the hidden princess. The Lord of Death himself has not yet returned from his routine inspection of…”

Hearing this, Wei Chen placed the tablet face down. He massaged his forehead, trying to ease his rising stress.

This thing…

Would….

Definitely screw him over!

“Are you crazy? This happened, and you asked me to help you? You do know that I’m your dad’s subordinate, right? If Ms. Youqi finds out that I helped you like this, one report from her would screw me over.” Wei Chen snapped at the little girl, making her teary eyes even worse.

“Ughhhh… what… what should I do… Chenchen, help me. Please~” The little girl shook Wei Chen’s arm, pleading with him.

Wei Chen massaged his face with both hands, groaning.

“Ughhh… I don’t know, kid. This is way beyond my pay grade already. If your mom finds out that you’ve been with me all this time, she’ll definitely slap me to death.”

“Uuuuuu…” The girl cried.

Wei Chen had a headache as well. If he forced her back, he might get scolded later by his boss, especially if this mischievous girl decided to throw mud at him. But that would not be a big deal, since she was the one who snuck out of the house.

But this? This was already beyond his control. Things had escalated far beyond the worst case scenario in his mind.

The entire Underworld was on lockdown. Martial law. All because this little girl had snuck out of her house. This was insane. This kind of shit?

He couldn’t take it.

Now… if he could just make sure he was affected as little as possible… Wei Chen thought to himself. Then his eyes fell on the little girl.

She was crying and sobbing as if the world were ending.

“I’ll bring you home, and I’ll help talk to your mom, okay?” Wei Chen patted the girl’s head.

At that moment, he thought that if he wanted to help the little girl a bit more, and in turn help himself, he might need to bring an apology gift as well. He decided to go to the kitchen to cook something nice and quick.

“Let me prepare an apology gift first, and then I’ll bring you back. The gift might make your mom less angry at you.”

“Let’s say…” Wei Chen’s tone rose a level, changing into baby talk. “You help make it for her as an apology. How about that?” he asked.

The girl nodded. “Umm… thank you.”

Hearing that, Wei Chen let out a sigh of relief. At least this girl knew when she should stay put.

“Come with me and help too. Otherwise, I can’t tell your mom that you helped make it,” Wei Chen said with a smile, waving his hand for the girl to follow him.

“Ummm…” The girl nodded and followed Wei Chen.

In the kitchen, he decided to make a big Cheesy Garlic Bread menu. It was fast to prepare, and this little troublemaker could help too. At least she was in the Nascent Soul realm. She should be able to help cut things.

Wei Chen gave little Ningning a premade loaf of bread that he had prepared beforehand. It was a standard type of bread one could easily find in a modern-day convenience store, but not in this world.

“Cut it into a heart shape like this, okay?” Wei Chen said, demonstrating for the child before letting her try.

After a good three minutes, the child had finished her job. It had to be said, this child with Nascent Soul realm cultivation was pretty impressive when it came to cutting things.

“Now it’s my turn. You can wait in the dining room. You can play with Max while you’re waiting,” said Wei Chen.

The child was still downcast. She only nodded and walked back to the dining room.

What Wei Chen did not know was that right now, the child’s heart was quivering in fear. She was afraid that her parents would really throw her out. She was afraid that what she did would cause Wei Chen to get into trouble.

She was old enough to understand that Wei Chen, as the one involved, might suffer because of her.

Her mind reeled back to the words of an old servant who had once threatened her, saying that her parents would throw her out of the house if she became too naughty.

Because it had been so effective, the old servant often used those words to scare her whenever she misbehaved. As time passed, it became a shadow in her heart and grew into an instinctive fear.

She thought about Wei Chen and his cooking, about the one who always made delicious food for her. She did not want him to get into trouble because of her. Her mind drifted to the news about kidnappings.

What if she really got kidnapped? If that were true, then Chenchen would not get into trouble because of her, right?

With that thought in mind, she walked out of the Flying Ark building and jumped out of the ark, looking for some bad guy to kidnap her.

After about half an hour, Wei Chen walked out of the kitchen with a giant box of Cheesy Garlic Bread in his hands. He had chosen a nice wooden box from the array of gift boxes provided by the quartermaster.

He walked into the dining room but the only one there was Max.

“Huh? Where did that girl go?”
