Chapter 15: I Am Your Mate!
Chapter 15: I Am Your Mate!
Meris paced back and forth in the master bedroom. It’d been a full whole day, yet Dante hadn’t returned with Selene.
[He’s not back yet?]
"No." She said into the phone call she was having. "What is he still doing with her at the hospital? He could have just left her there."
[Which hospital is it?]
"NEO hospital." She asked, "Should I just go there and see for myself?"
[To do what? You’re his mate. Do you want to appear so desperate?
"Mavros!"—
The sound of a car pulling into the compound sounded. Meris lifted her gaze to the window. "I think he is back."
She hung up and hurriedly slipped her feet into her slippers. She made her way down the stairs, coming to a stop at the very last staircase.
She looked over.
Dante had just walked into the foyer with Selene following beside him.
The three came face to face with each other. Dante stopped and so did Selene. They stared at Meris, who was also gazing back at them with a panicked look on her face.
"Dante," she said his name.
Dante stuffed his black-gloved hands into the pocket of his pants. "Why aren’t you asleep?"
"How could I possibly sleep?" she asked. "You’ve been away for the entire day. I was restless. You’re my mate, Dante, isn’t it normal that I worry like this?"
"You didn’t need to."
"Dante!" Meris clenched her hands. She looked over to Selene, whose arms were folded. She pointed a finger at her. "Did you have to stay at the hospital all day with her?"
"She was hurt," Dante responded. His tone was cold, clearly displeased with the entire situation. "It was my duty to look after her. She is my guest."
"Dante!"
She stomped her feet on the floor.
"How can you say this? You have a mate, I am your mate! You can’t be this way with another woman. Don’t you understand that it hurts me?"
He frowned. "Hurt you? I didn’t do anything with her. I merely took her to the hospital. What are you getting at?"
Meris took a step forward, advancing to stand right before Selene. She met her at the same eye level, saying, "Have you ever wondered that maybe she also intends to get under you?"
Dante lifted a brow.
Selene immediately narrowed her eyes.
Both man and woman were equally stunned.
"What?" he rasped under his breath.
Selene pointed to herself. "Me?" Then she pointed towards Dante. "Get under him?"
Dante eyed at her. He his brows at her implication, tilting his head in curiosity. What did she mean by that question?
Selene took a step forward, further closing the inches of distance between her and Meris. She smiled. "I remember vividly you said I was no competition. What has changed?"
"You are not!" Meris spat. "A wild, undesirable omega like you can never be!"
"Then what’s the problem?" Selene retorted, amused with laughter twinkling in her pupils. "Why did you make this claim? Get under his bed? You really think I’d ever want to sleep with Dante? Him?"
She looked at the man.
Dante was also staring at her, face squeezing in displeasure the more she spoke.
"Do you think I’d ever sleep with you, hm?" she asked him.
And when he didn’t answer her, she approached closer to ook directly into his eyes. "Tell your mate, Dante. You’re really not my type. And I don’t want to get into your pants, not even for a second. I’m only a contract wife, one that will end soon."
She glanced back at Meris. "And what are you so afraid of?"
"You’re his mate. Don’t you understand that when alphas, especially supreme alphas, have mates, they really can’t notice other women because their mate is the only thing occupying their brain? Alphas are possessive of their mate, obsessed with them. So tell me, what are you so afraid of? What makes you think he could ever be tempted by a wild omega like me when you’re his mate? Or..."
She thoughtfully rubbed her chin.
"...am I getting something wrong here? Is there something I don’t know?"
Panic sizzled up Meris’s back instantly. She blinked rapidly, throat bopping as she deeply swallowed.
Selene eyed her, a smile curling at the edges of her lips.
She slowly walked up to Meris and lifted her hand to flick a finger against her forehead. "Say...why are you sweating so much?"
She waved a hand over herself.
"It’s not hot in here. The air conditioner is very much turned on. So then why are you suddenly sweating?"
Then she turned toward Dante.
"Are you two not mates? Is there a mistake? Or is your mate naturally just so insecure and paranoid?"
"You..." Dante’s jaw twitched. "Enough of this nonsense." He stormed over to her and grabbed her by the bicep.
"What are you doing?" She looked him up and down.
He glared at her first before he glanced at Meris. "Go upstairs and wait for me. We’ll talk."
Meris’s eyes fell to where he held Selene. She secretly balled her fists so hard, her knuckles turned paper white. Then without saying a word, she turned around and stormed away.
Dante roughly dragged Selene away towards the storage room he’d given her. She struggled in his hold.
"Let go of me."
She hissed at him.
"Let go of me, Dante!"
Dante pulled her into the room before letting go of her. She staggered on her feet, managing to steady herself. Then she snapped at him, "What was that for?!"
The man shoved his hands into the pocket of his pants.
He grunted, "Your safety is in my hands, yes, but you also need to be careful and not throw yourself into problems. Don’t think I’m some knight that will always be at your beck and call."
"Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?" She snarked, "I didn’t see you save me from getting my head split or pois..."
She went quiet.
He narrowed his eyes on her. "What were you trying to say?"
