Chapter 10: I Dare You!
Chapter 10: I Dare You!
Seconds ticked by, bit by bit.
"You know, this was quite smart of you lots." Selene scoffed. "This is a poison that is not only hard to detect but also kills slowly. If I did, it would take a while to take effect, and by the time I am dead, it could be ruled as maybe an allergic reaction. But this is good. Since it’s a slow poison, we can sit here for as long as you want while it eats at you. You’ll writhe in pain, and eventually, just gradually, it will kill you. Take your time and think."
"You foreign bitch!" The head cook snapped.
Selene looked at her. "What is with this insult? Your alpha brought me here."
"So what? Do you think we’re afraid of you just because you’re a wife sold off by your father?"
"What did you say?"
"Yes. You’re just such a useless daughter that your own father had no choice but to use you as a trust deal. A sold wife." The head cook scoffed, chuckling in disdain, "You step into our pack and you think you can act as you please. Alpha’s wife, my foot! The alpha doesn’t even care for you one bit. Pfft, you aren’t even allowed to dine in the dining hall. Just who do you think you are?"
Selene gazed at this maid.
Never would a maid speak to her in this manner. It was comical to say the least.
"What?" The head cook snapped. "What are you glaring at me for? Want to slap me? I dare you."
Selene raised a brow. She tilted her head slightly, arching a smile before slowly rising to her feet. Without saying a word, she began to walk towards the head cook.
The head cook frowned. "You—what are you trying to do—"
Selene lifted her head and descended her hand across her face, slapped her hard.
PAH!
The sound resounded across the entire kitchen space.
The others gasped. Ellenor, who was still choking, looked over, eyes growing as wild as a saucer.
The slap had been so heavy, the head cook’s face twisted over to the other side.
She touched her cheek in disbelief and blinked rapidly before slowly lifting her head to meet Selene’s eyes.
"You...dare to slap me?"
"I did." Selene shrugged. She smiled. "What are you going to do now? Beat me? Try."
"YOU!—" She raised her hand to slap back. Selene, however, grasped her by the side of her head before she could and slammed her head into the nearby wall.
The head cook’s brain rang with piercing pain, and she dropped to the floor, drooling off her mouth as she tried to catch her breath. Blood trickled down the side of her head.
Selene chuckled.
"I’ll say it again. I will never bully first. However, if anyone mistreats and bullies me, I will fight back, and it will not be pretty."
She glanced at the others. "Do any of you want to have a go?"
They didn’t even think before they hurriedly shook their heads.
"Good." She walked back to the chair and sat down. Then she threw one leg over the other. She pointed at Ellenor. "Will you talk?"
Ellenor looked at the others. "Please help me..."
But they shifted away from her. What could they do when even the head cook couldn’t even deal with Selene? She was doomed.
"Them?" Selene clicked her tongue, shaking her head. "They can’t help you. Even if they take you away, before you get to the hospital, you will die. So?"
Ellenor tried to speak, but just then, she hiccupped, wanting to vomit. Nausea was kicking in.
"Oh? Would you look at that?" Selene chimed.
Ellenor’s eyes widened. She was going to die. I’m going to die.
She quickly shook her head and hurriedly crawled towards Selene. She grabbed her leg. "I’m sorry! Please, I am sorry!"
Seeing what she was doing, the other maids quickly dropped to their knees. They joined in and begged, "Please! Have mercy!"
Selene let out a deep breath. "I’ve made things easy for you. Simply tell me who put you up to this, and I’ll give you the antidote. Why are you complicating things? Don’t you want to tell the truth and save yourself?"
"No! No! I want to!" Ellenor begged. "It was her!"
"Who?"
"The madam! It was the madam who made us do it!"
The madam? Selene narrowed her eyes. Meris?
The other maids chimed in, confessing.
"It was the madam."
"She made us do it!"
"We had no choice," Ellenor cried. "If we didn’t do it, our families’ lives would be in danger. Please...please, I’m begging you. I don’t want to die!"
Selene’s expression grew terrifyingly cold. She secretly balled her hands by her sides, but then she suddenly smiled.
"Okay." She reached into her pocket and took out a small bottle. "Here you go."
She tossed it at the maid.
Before coming, she’d made sure to bring along antidotes as well. She was meticulous, knowing that in an enemy territory...anything could kill her.
Standing to her feet, Selene walked to the door. But then she paused.
"And where is your madam?" she asked.
"In the master bedroom," one of them answered.
"I see." She spared only a single glance at the head cook before she left, slamming the door shut behind her.
She stalked towards the stairs and began to walk up to the second floor.
She beelined towards the master bedroom and stopped at the door. A little smile played on her lips.
I thought if I just minded my business, I would spend a month here and leave without trouble. But it doesn’t look like that is the case. SOMEONE already wants me dead.
Taking a deep breath, she lifted her hand and left three light knocks on the door.
Inside, Meris sat at Dante’s table, watching herself in the mirror. She was combing through her head, and the moment she heard the knock, she paused. She turned her head and frowned.
"Who’s there?" she asked.
No response came.
She slowly stood up. And gradually began to approach the door. She grabbed the door handle, pulled the door open, and what she saw was Selene standing with an expressionless smile on her face.
Selene said, "Hi!"
