Chapter 889 Condition

Chapter 889: Chapter 889 Condition

Bella closed her eyes for a moment in pain.

The lawyer’s voice grew quieter.

"I have spent years watching all of you stand in the same rooms while behaving as though you belonged to different worlds. You competed with one another. You measured your worth by money. You compared your success. You fought over things that will one day belong to someone else anyway. Perhaps I am partly responsible. I gave you opportunities. I gave you wealth. I gave you education. I gave you everything I believed would make your lives easier but somewhere along the way, I failed to teach you the one thing that cannot be bought: how to value one another."

Bella wiped a tear from her cheek.

The lawyer continued.

"Therefore, I have decided to leave each of my grandsons what I know they value most."

Jacob looked down. Roman’s jaw tightened. Ashton listened carefully.

"You wanted shares. I have given you shares. You wanted properties. I have given you properties. You wanted a future secured by my wealth. I have given you the means to build that future."

The lawyer paused.

"But nothing comes without responsibility."

Jacob’s expression changed.

The lawyer looked at the next paragraph.

"There is one person I want you to protect."

Bella’s heart skipped. She already knew.

The lawyer looked directly at her. "Isabella."

Her eyes widened. Her breath caught.

"She is my granddaughter but she is also the person who brought warmth back into my life when I had begun to believe my family had forgotten how to love."

Bella’s eyes immediately overflowed with tears.

The lawyer continued reading.

"She never asked me for money. She never asked me for property. She only gave me something I had almost forgotten existed. Company. A reason to smile and the feeling of being loved simply because I was her grandfather."

Bella covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

Leo’s expression softened as he watched her. He gently rubbed her back.

William’s letter continued.

"Therefore, I am asking my grandsons for one thing. Protect Bella, because she is your family."

The lawyer’s voice became firmer.

"And I have one final condition."

Jacob looked up. Roman’s expression became tense. Ashton swallowed hard.

"If any one of you deliberately harms Bella, threatens her, conspires against her, attempts to remove her from the family, or allows anyone under your influence to harm her..."

The lawyer paused.

The room became unbearably quiet.

"...then every property and share I have left to that grandson will immediately be transferred to Bella."

Jacob’s eyes widened. Roman’s face went stiff. Ashton stared at the lawyer in disbelief.

The lawyer continued.

"This condition applies individually. If one person breaks the agreement, only that person’s inheritance will be transferred. But if all three of you fail her..." He looked down at the final paragraph. "...then every asset assigned to all three of you will become Bella’s."

Nobody spoke.

The lawyer slowly lowered the letter, but there was one final section. He began reading again.

"And perhaps you will wonder why I have done this."

William’s words softened.

"I am not trying to make Bella powerful. I am trying to make you understand that family is not something you remember only when there is an inheritance involved. I want you to stand beside one another. I want you to sit at the same table without counting who received more. I want you to celebrate one another’s happiness instead of secretly wishing for one another’s failure. I want my grandsons to stop looking at their sister as competition."

More tears were falling down Bella’s cheeks.

"She has lost enough people in her life. I do not want her to lose her family too."

The lawyer paused for several seconds.

Then he read the final lines.

"I don’t know whether you will obey me because you love me or because you fear losing what I have given you. Perhaps, in the beginning, it will be the latter. But I hope that one day, it will become the former. Because when all the companies disappear, when the houses belong to another generation, when your names are forgotten by people who once admired your success, the only thing that will remain is the love you gave to the people who stood beside you. Do not make the mistake of realizing that too late. Take care of Bella. Take care of each other. And, for once, be a family."

The lawyer slowly folded the letter.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Bella sat completely still, tears quietly slipping down her cheeks. She looked at the empty chair where William should have been. Her grandfather had thought about everything. Even after leaving, he was still trying to bring his family together.

Leo reached for her hand again.

Bella held it tightly.

Across the table, Jacob, Roman and Ashton remained silent with complicated expressions.

After the entire will was finally announced, the room slowly began to empty. The lawyer gathered his documents while the family remained unusually quiet, each person seemingly lost in their own thoughts. Bella didn’t want to stay any longer than necessary. Her heart still felt heavy from everything Grandpa William had written and she had no desire to discuss money or inheritance. She simply wanted to go home with Leo.

She quietly stood from her chair and adjusted her clothes before turning toward the door. Leo immediately stood as well, ready to follow her.

"Bella."

She stopped.

The voice came from behind her.

Bella slowly turned around and found Ashton standing there.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Ashton looked different now. The smug expression he had worn earlier was gone, replaced by an awkward uncertainty. He glanced briefly toward Jacob and Roman, who were still sitting at the table, then looked back at Bella.

"Bella..." he called again, softer this time.

She tilted her head slightly. "Yes?"

Ashton hesitated. He seemed to have something important to say but the words weren’t coming easily.

Bella waited patiently.

Leo remained beside her, silent but watchful.

Ashton finally took a breath and walked a little closer. "I wanted to talk to you."

Bella glanced at Leo. Leo gave her a small nod, silently telling her he would stay right there.
