Chapter 653 653: An Unspoken Understanding
“What are you still hesitating for?! As long as we strike now, we can definitely crush the enemy!”
Zara looked anxiously at the burning battlefield in the distance and the Stellar Empire’s royal guards rapidly closing in, urging Charles to act.
But Charles remained calm.
After finishing the last details of his plan, he stood up at once.
“You’re right. Let’s attack now! You go support General Sost. I’ll hold off the royal guards!” Charles said quickly.
Although his orders were not exactly the same as the plan they had discussed earlier, Zara didn’t hesitate.
She immediately turned into a streak of light, rushing toward the temporary camp of the Stellar Empire’s vanguard.
Meanwhile, Charles locked his eyes on Connell.
At that moment, Connell was charging at the front of the royal guards, eyes wide and determination carved into his face. To anyone watching, it looked as if he was ready to throw away his life to take down Withered Tree Fortress.
But Charles knew the truth—Connell was only acting.
“Your performance is truly convincing. But good acting alone won’t bring you revenge. If you want this to succeed, you’ll need to have perfect understanding with me.”
Muttering this under his breath, Charles summoned all of his mystical beasts.
“In this battle, you must look as fierce as possible, but don’t actually kill Connell’s mystical beasts. Just keep stalling them.”
With that, he sent them all out.
Rainbow was the first to fly forward. Before even reaching the sky above the royal guards, she revealed her full dragon form.
In the pitch-black night, a colossal rainbow-colored dragon suddenly spread its wings, covering the sky.
The sight stunned the royal guards.
Around the dragon, several other rare and powerful mystical beasts descended from the skies, rushing at incredible speed toward the guards.
From their intelligence reports, the guards quickly realized these beasts all belonged to Charles. And if the beasts were here, then Charles himself couldn’t be far away.
Moments earlier, the royal guards had been full of fire and confidence. Now, fear crept into their hearts.
Even before Charles himself appeared, his mystical beasts alone had already shaken them.
Connell raised his voice and shouted,
“Don’t be afraid! Just focus on fighting Charles’s mystical beasts together with mine! Leave Charles to me!”
His words immediately lifted the morale of the royal guards.
Then, spurring his horse forward, he charged straight ahead.
It didn’t take long before he saw Charles, standing there with the Chasing the Moon Bow in hand.
Their eyes met, and in that instant, both could see the fierce determination burning within the other.
Connell suddenly leapt from his horse, shouting loudly enough for everyone to hear,
“I will never fear you! For His Highness the crown prince, I swear I will kill you with my own hands!”
With that, he gripped his weapon and rushed at Charles.
Charles’s face grew solemn.
The moment Connell charged, Charles pulled back the Chasing the Moon Bow to its limit.
“You’re far too arrogant. You and your mystical beasts are nothing but trash. You’ll never be able to stop me!”
As his words rang out, arrow after arrow, wrapped in immense power, rained down from the sky.
But Connell dodged them all and closed the distance, rushing right to Charles’s side.
When they were less than two meters apart, Charles finally lowered the bow and pulled out the black gold long knife from his pocket.
The clash of his blade against Connell’s weapon sent out a massive shockwave.
The force rippled across the battlefield, shaking every royal guard and every mystical beast locked in combat.
The mystical beasts froze. The royal guards froze.
All eyes turned to Charles and Connell, locked in fierce battle.
Everyone knew Charles was stronger than Connell, but what they saw on the field told a different story—
Connell seemed to be the one pressing the advantage.
Like a madman, he launched attack after attack without pause.
Even though Charles’s power was greater, facing Connell’s crazed assault still forced him to fight with care.
The royal guards were deeply moved by the sight.
“If only everyone in the Empire fought like Connell, we would have crushed the Serpent Empire long ago. We might even be ruling entire regions by now.”
“His fighting style is insane though… he’s not defending at all, just attacking like a wild beast.”
“Our battle no longer matters. The outcome of this war rests entirely on Charles and Connell.”
The royal guards truly came to respect Connell.
In their eyes, he was the only one willing to risk everything to complete this mission.
The battle between Connell and Charles was incredibly fierce.
Even the other battlefield could feel the shock of their clash.
General Sost and Zara began to worry.
They had thought Charles would easily crush Connell and the royal guards, but no one expected the fight to turn into a war of attrition.
In this situation, they felt they needed to finish off their own enemies as quickly as possible.
Maxwell and Aldany, of course, knew what had to be done.
There was no way they would allow Sost and Zara to break free and support Charles.
Even though both of them had their own disputes with Connell, at this critical moment, they knew they had to stand united.
“We need to strike first. Just defending won’t hold the enemy back!” Aldany said urgently to Maxwell.
He could sense that Sost and Zara were preparing to pull out from the battle.
Maxwell still hesitated.
“You really want to attack now? If we push forward, our line could collapse instantly. The losses we’d suffer would be devastating.”
“The battle has already reached its most critical moment!” Aldany’s tone was firm and unyielding.
“We can’t afford to hesitate anymore. We must take the initiative. We absolutely cannot let these enemies interfere with Connell’s fight.”
Aldany had already made up his mind.
Even if Maxwell refused, he was prepared to send in the Serpent Empire’s elite warriors under his command.
Maxwell sighed at those words.
“Fine, we’ll do it your way. What a stroke of dumb luck for him—fighting like a madman, and somehow he’s actually managing to suppress Charles.”
Though Maxwell agreed to Aldany’s plan, in truth, he had no intention of celebrating Connell. His words carried more sarcasm than praise.
Aldany ignored the remark. All he wanted was to act quickly.
The members of the Ancient Academy, together with the Serpent elites, launched an attack.
Their sudden charge successfully tied down General Sost and Zara.
Sost felt both anxious and angry.
“We can’t let them hold us here! Go support Charles—I’ll deal with their attack!”
With that, Sost launched a new wave of counterattacks.
The Ancient Academy’s warriors and the Serpent elites suffered heavy losses.
But none of them retreated.
Because by now, the truth was obvious to everyone.
This battlefield no longer truly mattered.
The one who emerged victorious between Charles and Connell—would be the one who decided the fate of all.
Taking advantage of General Sost’s strike, Zara quickly broke away from the battlefield.
Without a moment’s hesitation, she rushed to Charles’s side.
At this point, Charles was still being pressed back by Connell, but his disadvantage was shrinking.
Anyone watching could see that the gap in strength between Charles and Connell was getting smaller.
The royal guards grew anxious.
Then Zara suddenly appeared on the field.
Her arrival removed any suspense from the fight.
Charles joined forces with her, and together they launched a fierce assault on Connell.
Facing the combined pressure of two opponents, Connell was quickly forced onto the defensive.
He shouted to the royal guards,
“Run! I can’t win this fight anymore. You must report everything that happened here to His Highness! His Highness will surely make the fairest judgment!”
Hearing this, the royal guards scattered in retreat.
Staying now meant nothing but waiting for death.
As they fled, Connell gathered all of his mystical beasts together.
“I will never surrender so easily! My beasts will buy me the chance to escape!”
His mystical beasts charged straight at Charles and Zara.
Charles instinctively dodged, and Zara quickly followed his lead.
Though Zara felt she could have blocked the attack, since Charles had already avoided it, she knew she couldn’t recklessly stand her ground.
Using that brief opening, Connell fled the battlefield at full speed.
By now the royal guards had already escaped far away and could no longer see what was happening behind them.
The grave look on Charles’s face faded. He stood calmly, gathering all of Connell’s mystical beasts into his hands.
“For now, you’ll stay with me. It won’t be long before I send you back to your master,” Charles said with a gentle smile to the beasts.
Zara, watching this scene, wore a look of both doubt and astonishment.
