Chapter 408: Which Mrs. Taylor?
Chapter 408: Which Mrs. Taylor?
Dorothy replied, "Okay."
As Yvonne disappeared from view, Dorothy shifted her eyes back and, remembering something, took out her phone.
"Why do I have to lie to Yvonne, Stanley? She looks devastated."
On hearing it, Stanley had a faint smile curbing his lips. He replied, "It’s a long story. I’ll tell you about it later."
Dorothy had to resign herself to it. Then she said in a sweet voice, "When are we going out on another date, Stanley?"
Stanley frowned and said in a gentle tone, "I’ll call you when I’m free, pumpkin."
"Alright, don’t just keep me waiting, sweetheart."
She hung up at the expected "Yes" and then Yvonne’s frustrated eyes occurred to her.
She had to comfort herself that Stanley had a reason for it.
Soon afterwards, she left the cafe, little knowing that on the other end of the line, Stanley was sneering at her: "Idiot. You don’t know how to spell ’judgement’".
Just then, a nurse came in and said, "Mrs. Taylor has been expecting you, doctor." "Mrs. Taylor? Which Mrs. Taylor?" Stanley was confused.
"The one that frequents our hospital. I’ve heard that she is the mother of the president of Taylor Corporation."
Taylor Corporation?
"The Taylor Corporation?" Stanley wondered.
Her eyes soon lit up. He pulled up his gold-rimmed spectacles and said, "Let her in."
"Yes."
The nurse turned and went out.
Soon after, she came in with a woman following.
"This is Mrs. Taylor, doctor."
"Thanks. You may leave."
Stanley lifted his eyes and rested his gaze at Mrs. Taylor.
"Please have a seat, Mrs. Taylor."
The woman was Mrs. Taylor, Yvonne and James’ mother, in the flesh. Having suffered from a chronic disease, she had to frequent the hospital and take medicine
regularly each year.
She sat down.
"Dr. Levinston, this is my test sheet. Would you please help me with it?"
He took it out of her hand and checked on it.
Then he said, "Seems you’ve recovered very well, Mrs. Taylor. Just remember to take the medicine every day, and everything will be fine."
"Really? Thank you indeed, Dr. Levinston," exclaimed Mrs. Taylor.
"With pleasure," said Stanley, while writing down the results.
"As a matter of fact, your daughter-in-law is an old acquaintance of mine, Mrs.
Taylor," he assumed an air of carelessness.
"Is she? You know Yvonne?"
Mrs. Taylor was slightly surprised, then it suddenly occurred to her Yvonne was working here. "Oh, yes, yes. Stupid me. she used to work here. Of course you know her," chuckled Mrs. Taylor.
Stanley put his pen away and said, "By the way, how’s everything going with her?" Mrs. Taylor paused for a moment and answered, "Pretty well, thank you." "That’s good. Thought that misfortune would overwhelm her. Thank goodness." He said in a toneless voice as he passed the results to her.
...
Mrs. Taylor took the documents and asked out of curiosity, "What do you mean by ’misfortune’, doctor?"
Her expression of confusion confirmed Stanley’s speculation that the Taylors knew nothing about it.
And that could be of some service to him.
He decided to tell her the truth in a roundabout way.
"Fortunately, Yvonne didn’t take it seriously. And that’s good for her health. After all, not being able to have children is not her fault. And no one’s gonna blame her for that."
He pretended to be inadvertent.
Mrs. Taylor, however, was stunned at that.
"You must be mistaken!"
Stanley put on an air of guilt and said, "Hasn’t she told you about it? My apologies, Mrs. Taylor. Forget about it, please."
Yet it only intensified Mrs. Taylor’s curiosity.
She bombarded him: "Tell me the truth, Dr. Levingston, what happened to my daughter-in-law?"
She looked rather stern.
Stanley took off his spectacles and replied, "I’m sorry, Mrs. Taylor, but as a doctor, it’s my duty not to breach a patient’s privacy. But if you persist, I can recommend a doctor to you. He’s in charge of Yvonne. He may know more about it than I do."
With that, he passed her a business card.
Mrs. Taylor took it, had a look at it, and left with a word of gratitude.
Shortly after she was gone, Stanley made a call.
"Dr. Lynne, you know what to say, don’t you?"
He hung up the phone with a satisfactory grin.
It seemed that a storm was about to befall the Taylors.
Yvonne had been unhinged ever since she was out of the cafe.
She came in the hope of catching at a life-saving straw, only to be driven to the depths of despair.
Now she felt like that as a female, she was deprived of one of the most important rights: the right of birth.
Even the most advanced medical technologies couldn’t solve her problem.
The death penalty was pronounced.
Yvonne found herself in a desperate plight.
In a trance, she was home already, yet she failed to pluck up the courage to enter it.
Suddenly, there came a knock on the window.
She looked up and saw the familiar face of James’.
She rolled down the car window.
"What are you doing here, sweetheart?" James asked.
Contemplating James, she appeared a bit more resolute, having made up her mind to confess it.
With this thought in her head, she opened the door and got out.
"You’re home early today," Yvonne asked.
His car was not far away, indicating he was home just now.
James said, "I left a document home. You look ill. What happened?"
Yvonne concentrated her attention and replied, "I’m good. Probably because I didn’t sleep well last night. Just need to take a nap."
James felt relieved.
"Let’s get in. It’s cold outside."
With that, he pulled her into his arms and was prepared to go home, yet Yvonne just stood there.
"What’s wrong?" he asked.
Looking at his worried eyes, Yvonne decided she couldn’t take it and must confide in him now.
...
Yvonne closed her eyes at the thought and uttered, "I have something to tell you. It’s important."
Her resolute expression startled James a bit.
He said, "Let’s talk inside."
"I prefer somewhere outside."
James realized what she was about to say was of great significance and said, "As you wish. Get in the car and wait a minute for me to get the document."
She nodded and followed him with her eyes. When he’s out of sight, she turned, ready to get in. But then a white Phaeton stopped before her.
She recognized it was Mrs. Taylor’s.
And as expected, the person out was Mrs. Taylor.
Yvonne’s face hardened, yet she soon recovered herself and went up, "Good afternoon, mom."
Mrs. Taylor’s eyes swept her face impassively.
"What are you doing here? Home’s not far."
Her tone was as usual, yet Yvonne sniffed a scent of coldness in it.
She replied, "I’m just going in."
Without further exchange of words, Mrs. Taylor left.
Yvonne followed her after a short pause.
As they entered the house, James came downstairs with a document in his hand.
He was surprised to see Yvonne here and asked, "Haven’t we agreed to go out?"
Mrs. Taylor heard it and looked back as she was about to enter her room.
"Go out?"
James nodded.
Mrs. Taylor’s sight shifted from James to Yvonne, and she said, "It’s almost time for dinner. Let’s have dinner first."
James was about to refuse, but Yvonne signaled him to be silent.
James agreed, despite his curiosity.
He said, "All right, but I’ll have to deliver the document to the company. It’s important."
Mrs. Taylor walked into her room.
James blinked at Yvonne and said, "I’ll be back soon." Yvonne replied with a nod of the head and saw him off.
Yvonne had a feeling that Mrs. Taylor treated her differently from the past, yet she wasn’t quite sure about it.
In the evening, Mrs. Taylor asked, in the presence of Yvonne, James to go to her room to have a conversation, and they talked well into the night.
Yvonne was vaguely aware what happened... Mrs. Taylor found out about it.
Now she needn’t worry about how to tell James the truth, and she heaved a sigh of relief at that.
Finally she was freed from the desperate plight.
Yet it didn’t seem the anxiety had left her.
What was she worried about?â€Â"about? â€Â"That he’d desert her? That Mrs. Taylor would detest her and force them to divorce. To these questions she had no ready answers.
She was now in a panic.
"What’s up, Yvonne?"
As James entered their room, he saw the nervous Yvonne and asked her.
