Chapter 2439 - Revenge
Chapter 2439 – Revenge
Su Yi raised his hand, and Phoenix Song fell into his palm.
Su Yi gazed intently at it for a moment. Despite himself, he couldn’t help but sigh in relief.
That wisp of Yu Xinyao’s vital source energy was still intact. Yi Daoxuan’s vital source energy, however, had long since dissipated. All that remained was an imprint of his power.
This was perfectly ordinary, as the moment Yi Daoxuan reincarnated, all of the vital energy he’d left in this world dissipated.
Old Man Heart Demon really was one tough customer. He actually managed to get his hands on Phoenix Song, all in a bid to ruin my Dao Heart. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t achieve his aims.
Su Yi put Phoenix Song away.
Even without his first incarnation’s help, his Dao Heart would have been strong enough to face a shock like that without fear.
As for those three Eternal Source Powers… Su Yi looked at the three source energies the Progenitor-Level Outsider Celestial Demons had left behind, his expression a bit strange.
If he refined them, they’d surely transform his Dao Heart, physique, and soul to a shocking degree.
However… At least for now, Su Yi planned to do nothing of the sort. He’d seal them away instead.
“Daoist Brother.” Luo Yao, Wen Qingfeng, and the others walked up to greet him. All of them felt as if they’d narrowly escaped a brush with death.
Su Yi laughed and said, “I said it earlier: there was no need for you to go to your deaths. Now do you believe me?”
The group exchanged glances, then instinctively nodded. Who could possibly disbelieve him now?
“But things aren’t over yet,” said Su Yi. “Old Man Heart Demon and the others are dead, but the rest of the Outsider Celestial Demon army remains, and the mysterious figure within the Well of Turbulent Daos yet lives. We cannot afford complacency.”
Everyone felt solemn. They couldn’t help but recall what Old Man Heart Demon had said to Su Yi before he died: “Do you… really think you’ve won?”
There was no doubt about it. Old Man Heart Demon was dead, but he’d left backup countermeasures in place!
“Come on, let’s go back to Dao-Seeking City,” said Su Yi. He turned to leave.
Everyone was stunned. Luo Yao couldn’t help but ask, “Aren’t we going to the Thousand Deaths Mountains?”
“There’s no longer any need for that,” Su Yi said casually.
That’s right. There was no need for it. He’d left the city and headed into the mountains today, but they weren’t his real target.
Rather, he wanted to break through their enemies’ encirclement!
And the key to breaking through their encirclement lay in killing the three progenitors!
In other words, their enemies had assumed they were out of options, and that they’d had no choice but to seek refuge in the Thousand Deaths Mountains, but in truth, Su Yi had been leading them around by the nose.
Now that the greatest danger had been resolved, there was no need to actually go to the Thousand Deaths Mountains.
Luo Yao, Wen Qingfeng, and the others quickly grasped this. All of them were rueful.
“Had I known Brother Fuyou had this in the bag the whole time, I wouldn’t have been so worried!” Wen Qingfeng said with self-deprecation. When he thought back to his repeated insistence on going to his death for Su Yi, he felt rather awkward.
“This isn’t your fault. You have only Daoist Brother to blame for hiding himself too deeply. He obviously had numerous countermeasures prepared, but he kept them from us, making us worry for nothing,” grumbled Luo Yao.
Su Yi couldn’t help but laugh.
……
Not long after Su Yi left, a figure appeared before the Thousand Deaths Mountains. It was none other than the handsome young man who owned the Book of Legends!
His expression shifted erratically. Just… just what kind of opponent did I provoke?
Although he hadn’t witnessed the prior battle with his own eyes, it had caused too great a disturbance for him to miss. The commotion alone was enough for him to piece together much of the truth!
Fortunately, I didn’t recklessly attempt to get revenge. If I had, well, losing this soul body wouldn’t have been a big deal, but I’m sure that guy would have run off with the rest of the Book of Legends.
The thought filled him with lingering terror.
He was from the River of Destiny, and he was an expert of the Path of Eternity in his own right.
Yet now, he really did feel deep-seated, visceral dread!
Just who was that guy? How did he manage to use a page of the Book of Legends to manifest a book soul so terrifying?
Could it be that it’s really as Old Man Heart Demon said, and that one of his past incarnations was from the Eternal Heavens Domain?
No, this won’t do. I cannot stay in the Boundless Battlefield. I must leave as soon as possible!
The handsome young man immediately made a decision, turned, and left.
He obviously still hadn’t realized that he’d been marked.
……
Kaboom!
A muffled rumbling rang out as the skies shattered and a dried-up well appeared in a barren, lifeless plain in the Boundless Battlefield.
A rain of chaos light emanated from the well, but it couldn’t cover the startling sword gash on its surface.
“You think you’ve won, huh?” said a mysterious voice. “Little do you know… This time, you’ve done me an enormous favor!”
As that inscrutable voice rang out, a figure shot out of the Well of Ancient Chaos. The figure was indistinct and condensed entirely out of chaos light. There was no discerning his true appearance.
“It’s just a pity that I couldn’t take you down, too,” sighed the indistinct figure.
Moments later, he raised his hand. The Well of Turbulent Daos shrank countless times over, stopping only when it was the size of a fist, and landed in his palm.
Their plans had been absolutely seamless. At least, it had seemed that way. The outcome proved that no matter how seamless a plan was, no amount of planning could overcome an absolute difference in strength!
“But although I failed to achieve both of my aims in a single operation, I’ve borrowed Su Yi’s hands to resolve my greatest latent threat. Now, I can naturally return to the Path of Eternity and far surpass my past self!”
As the indistinct figure pondered out loud, his figure wriggled and contorted. In the blink of an eye, he’d taken on Old Man Heart Demon’s appearance!
“Of course, things aren’t over yet! Su Yi, no matter what, you can forget about leaving the Boundless Battlefield without first paying a heavy price!” whispered the figure who now looked just like Old Man Heart Demon.
It wasn’t just his appearance, either. His disposition, presence, and even his mannerisms were identical to Old Man Heart Demon’s.
Were Su Yi here to see him, he’d undoubtedly question whether or not Old Man Heart Demon was really dead.
“Old Man Heart Demon” glanced down at the crack on the well. Despite himself, his heart ached; he felt as if it were dripping blood.
This was his supreme treasure, his ultimate killer weapon, and he’d gone to great lengths and paid an enormous price to acquire it, only for it to be all but destroyed in a single slash!
He might well be able to repair it, but not any time soon.
“Just you wait. I’ll make you pay an unbearable price for what you’ve done!” said the man who looked like Old Man Heart Demon. All the while, his expression didn’t even ripple.
He put the well away, turned, and left.
……
The Outsider Celestial Demons stationed throughout the Boundless Battlefield were biding their time, ready for battle, when all of them were ordered back to their bases.
All of them received ill tidings. Progenitor Huan Yan and Progenitor Huang Qi were dead. Only Old Man Heart Demon yet lived.
This news shook the heart of every last Outsider Celestial Demon. Fortunately, Old Man Heart Demon was there to oversee things. He quickly quelled the chaos and restored order to the ranks.
That very day, Su Yi and his companions returned to Dao-Seeking City.
They were back in familiar territory, but Luo Yao, Wen Qingfeng, and the others couldn’t help but feel as if a lifetime had passed since they were last there.
Before they left, their lives hung in the balance, and they’d prepared for the worst. They’d fought their way through their enemies’ ranks, never once even considering that they’d soon return.
But none of them celebrated. All of them knew that this wasn’t really over yet.
Killing the three progenitors wasn’t enough to quell the flames of hatred and fury in their hearts.
Severing this blood debt was a simple matter. All they had to do was rip the grass up by the roots!
Su Yi went straight into seclusion upon their return.
He’d been so pressed for time after breaking into the Undying Realm that, as soon as he’d stabilized his cultivation base, he led his friends away from Dao-Seeking City. He didn’t even have time to go into seclusion first.
Now, he finally had a chance to calm his heart and focus on his cultivation.
That aside, on their way to the Thousand Deaths Demon Mountains, Su Yi and his companions had gathered an abundance of trophies, including no small number of rare Undying source energies.
They were just the kind of cultivation resources Su Yi needed.
As for Undying Divine Crystals and other such treasures? They now struggled to satisfy the needs of his cultivation base.
Time slipped by. Soon, half a month had passed.
Everything had been peaceful in the interim, with no waves of any kind. The armies of the Outsider Celestial Demons had never once appeared near Dao-Seeking City.
Luo Yao, Wen Qingfeng, and the others watching over the city found this surprising, but none of them dared to get complacent. They scrupulously did as Su Yi commanded before going into seclusion; none of them took so much as half a step beyond the city’s walls.
It was for this reason that they had no idea what was happening outside the city.
“Luo Yao, what do you think Old Man Heart Demon’s backup plan was?” asked Wen Qingfeng.
They’d been discussing this matter for the past few weeks, analyzing the situation to see if they could figure it out.
But they’d yet to come up with any definite answers.
“This is the thirty-third time you’ve asked me that in the last two weeks,” said Luo Yao, a bit exasperated.
Wen Qingfeng was instantly sheepish. “I… I’m just worried is all.”
“We’ve already analyzed the situation, and we’ve concluded that there are three possibilities,” said Luo Yao. “First, he might have just been bluffing. Perhaps all he wanted was to scare us before he died, and we can simply disregard him.
“Second, his so-called backup plan has something to do with the mysterious person inside the Well of Turbulent Daos. If so, it’ll be hard to guess the specifics.”
“Third, he really has prepared countermeasures, and they’re extraordinarily dangerous. If so, I’m certain they’re designed to target Daoist Brother Fuyou’s weak points.”
Luo Yao paused, “Given Old Man Heart Demon’s character, I think the first possibility is unlikely. There’s no way he’d be so juvenile as to make empty threats before he died.
“But the second and third possibilities seem highly likely.”
She’d only just said this when Su Yi suddenly emerged from the grand hall.
“There’s no point in trying to analyze all that,” said Su Yi. “Our next step is to take the initiative to attack and get revenge. As for Old Man Heart Demon’s countermeasures? If they exist, they’ll naturally come to light while we’re getting revenge.”
Luo Yao and Wen Qingfeng’s spirits soared as they walked up to greet him.
“In that case, when do we begin?” asked Wen Qingfeng.
“Right now,” Su Yi said casually. “I just don’t know whether or not the Outsider Celestial Demon Army is ready to ‘welcome’ us yet or not.”
Luo Yao and the others exchanged glances, their hearts boiling over with the will to fight.
The day they’d been waiting for was finally here!
They’d been trapped in Dao-Seeking City for countless years, watching helplessly as one old friend after another died bitter deaths. Who else could possibly have understood their agony, torment, despair, and grief?
But now, their chance to seek revenge had finally arrived! Who wouldn’t have been eager?
