Chapter 2341 - It Seems I’ve Seen Her Somewhere Before
Chapter 2341 – It Seems I’ve Seen Her Somewhere Before
Su Yi laughed. “I’m different from you. When I conduct my affairs, I consider who’s on my side first. I worry about right and wrong later.”
“‘Who’s on your side?’” Mu Bai said coldly. “Are you saying you plan to stand on that witch’s side?”
Su Yi shook his head. “You’ve misunderstood.”
Mu Bai furrowed his brow. “What exactly are you trying to say?”
His attitude was domineering, and he sounded displeased.
But Su Yi just laughed, not the least bit concerned. “You’ll understand later.
He stretched out his hand and snapped his fingers.
Splurt!
The kneeling woman was reduced to ash.
Mu Bai’s expression mellowed considerably. “I see you have at least a speck of a conscience.”
“You’re mistaken,” sighed Su Yi. “I just didn’t guess that she’d give me wine like that.”
Wine brewed in human hearts? The very thought was repulsive.
Mu Bai wasted no more time on talk. He swung his saber, slaying every last one of the wicked rogue cultivators gathered here.
Su Yi didn’t stop him.
When the rogue cultivators first entered the hall, he noticed that some were yao cultivators, and ruthless ones at that, the type to kill a man then lick their weapons clean. That was part of why he’d chosen to distance himself and sit in the corner.
But there was no denying it; the sight of them gathering to drink and discuss the Dao was quite interesting.
If not for their heinous crimes, tonight’s Snowy Night Discussion of the Dao would have ended peacefully.
People were complicated. Even the cruelest, most brutal people had sides of them others didn’t know about.
The reverse was also true. Even the loftiest and most noble of people had often committed vile acts others didn’t know about.
Black and white, right and wrong. In the boundlessly vast God Domain, no standard for measuring them had ever existed.
But now, when Su Yi saw Mu Bai, he saw an altogether different possibility.
The hall was permeated with blood. Corpses lay strewn across the ground.
Mu Bai was gathering the spoils. He did it with such practiced familiarity that it was obvious he’d done this many times.
It seems he isn’t the rigid sort. He understands how to put things to good use, and how to let each battle strengthen him in preparation for the next, thought Su Yi.
He could say with certainty that Mu Bai’s principles made him a pariah in the Opening Origins Daoist Sect. Acquiring cultivation resources through the sect was surely incomparably difficult.
Perhaps this was why he’d chosen to gather the cultivation resources he needed from the evildoers he slew.
In doing so, he could strengthen himself. He was using his saber and effort to grow!
“Might I ask your name and surname, sir?” After gathering the spoils, Mu Bai suddenly looked at Su Yi.
Su Yi laughed. “I’m just a passerby.”
Mu Bai frowned. “Why were you with those fiends tonight, anyway?”
Su Yi was at a loss for words, but he quickly understood. So, the kid is suspicious of me.
When Su Yi didn’t say anything, Mu Bai’s gaze sharpened. “If you aren’t willing to answer, would you dare to let me test you with the Spiritblood Treasure Mirror?”
He flipped his palm, and a black treasure mirror floated above his palm.
The Spiritblood Treasure Mirror.
A treasure that examined the blood and qi.
They said that the more sins one committed, the denser the air of sin around you. Such mirrors could supposedly sense and reveal it.
However, as mystical as the mirrors were, they weren’t omnipotent. Many secret arts could break them.
“Sure,” Su Yi said with a laugh. He flicked his finger, and a wisp of blood shot into the mirror.
The black Spiritblood Treasure Mirror lit up. Ring after ring of dense, bloody light appeared on its surface.
Mu Bai stiffened, and his eyes widened. Just how many people must this guy have killed to have accumulated such dense, bloody light?
Even more shockingly, as the mirror continued probing, it quivered as if unable to take it. In the end, it split, exploding into pieces in Mu Bai’s hands!
He stood there in a daze, his expression shifting and uncertain.
When he next looked at Su Yi, his gaze was full of astonishment. Don’t tell me… that this guy is a deeply hidden old monster?
A chill coursed down Mu Bai’s spine as he realized that he’d likely run into grave danger!
“Did I scare you?” Su Yi took out a jug of wine and had a sip.
Mu Bai took a deep breath, then said calmly, “Those unafraid to die aren’t concerned about such things.”
Su Yi asked with great interest, “If I let you leave here alive, will you still view me with enmity later?”
After a moment’s silence, “I’d investigate your background first, then investigate your sins. I’ll decide whether or not to kill you after gathering sufficient evidence!”
“You’d just consider the evidence?” said Su Yi.
“That’s right,” Mu Bai said calmly.
Su Yi asked, as if all of this were perfectly normal, “And what if I’m a leading expert of the God Domain, a figure on par with the Dipankara Buddha of the Western Paradise Spirit Mountains or Master God Yun Xiao of the Three Purities Daoist Court?”
Mu Bai didn’t even miss a beat. “I said it already. No matter who they are, I only kill based on evidence! Those leading experts you mentioned are no exceptions!”
He spoke calmly and without hesitation.
Su Yi gazed intently at him, then said, “I’m actually rather eager to see if you’ll do as you said you would.”
With that, he took out a talisman and handed it to Mu Bai. “This contains a secret art for sensing blood and qi. It’s far more reliable than a Spiritblood Treasure Mirror. Consider this compensation for destroying your belongings.”
Mu Bai was stunned. He accepted the talisman, and saw that it recorded a secret art called “Sensing Hidden Profundities.”
The name alone wasn’t enough to draw Mu Bai’s attention, but when he read the talisman’s contents, he was unwittingly immersed, and he soon forgot himself completely.
Su Yi sat in his wicker chair, gazing out of the hall.
It was the latter half of the night. He wasn’t sure when, but the snow had stopped. The distant mountains were pristine white, like a snowy cloak glittering with starlight.
Cold winds whooshed past.
Su Yi waved his sleeve through the air, and the campfire blazed once more, lending the hall a hint of warmth.
A long time passed before Mu Bai reacted as if awakening from a dream.
“Might I ask… why you taught me this wondrous technique, sir?” asked Mu Bai.
Su Yi pondered briefly. “I just want to see how far you can walk down this path, and whether or not you can truly one day intimidate the world’s evildoers.”
Su Yi took a sip of wine, then gazed into the distant mountains and rivers.
“The God Domain doesn’t differentiate between good and evil. If, one day, you could establish rules that everyone would have no choice but to respect… that would be even better.”
Mu Bai stood there, rooted to the spot. He was dazed, but also moved.
A while later, he put away the talisman, then clasped his fist. “I’ll remember this benevolence, but if I discover that you’re a heinous sinner, I won’t let you off!”
Su Yi smiled and didn’t argue.
Mu Bai had nothing else to say, so he just turned and left.
Su Yi watched him leave, then flipped his palm.
The Blade of Heaven’s Loathing floated into the air.
“The boy’s Dao Heart is pure, without fear or dread. Even rarer, the path he seeks resonates with me.” An energy fluctuation emanated from the Blade of Heaven’s Loathing. “Despite the passage of countless years, he’s the first person to ever resonate with me like this!”
Su Yi agreed completely. “He really is a rare one.”
He’d said all that to Mu Bai earlier, in part because he admired Mu Bai’s conduct and Dao, and in part because his imposing, saber-like presence had resonated with the Blade of Heaven’s Loathing!
This was truly outside of Su Yi’s expectations.
After all, neither he nor Mo Ye, who’d owned the blade previously, had ever truly become its master.
Yet now, Mu Bai, a mere Void Realm True Immortal, had resonated with the Blade of Heaven’s Loathing. How could Su Yi not be surprised?
The Blade of Heaven’s Loathing said directly, “I want to help him!”
Su Yi thought for a moment, then said, “l need to see more before I make a decision. Let’s wait and see.”
……
The night quickly receded. Soon, a new day would begin.
It had snowed overnight, and the mountains were cloaked on white.
Mu Bai was on his way back to his sect at top speed.
Over the past three years, his sect had faced an unprecedented crisis. It was beset by difficulties and strife both internal and external.
Even though Mu Bai was just an outer sect disciple, and even though his sectmates rejected and avoided him, he refused to remain a bystander.
He was an orphan. An outer sect elder had brought him back to the sect while he was still a swaddled infant, adopting and educating him.
To Mu Bai, the sect was his home. He didn’t care about his sectmates, but he did care about his home.
It was just a pity… that the elder who’d adopted him had been long since killed by heretical cultivators while on a trip outside the sect.
…
Six hours later.
The sky was now clear and bright, and the mountains and rivers were shrouded in silver.
Mu Bai silently calculated the distance. I’ll reach the sect in an hour.
Suddenly, a figure shot toward him. “Mu Bai.”
Mu Bai looked over, instantly solemn.
Fu Yong!
He was a servant, an attendant of Immortal King Lu Hui, the master of Spirit Suppression Palace.
Fu Yong was also a mighty Saint Realm yao cultivator in his own right!
“Senior Fu Yong, what are you doing here?” Mu Bai clasped his fist in greeting.
Fu Yong looked ancient, with a long, thin face and sunken eyes, and he had violent tendencies. He said expressionlessly, “What do you think?”
Mu Bai furrowed his brow, then shook his head. “I don’t know.”
“You’re really going to put on an act?” Fu Yong said icily, his expression terrifying to behold. “Earlier, I received a call for aid from one of my family’s juniors. She said she’d run into you, you jinx! Would you dare say that this never happened?”
Mu Bai said calmly, “I did indeed kill a woman of heinous crimes earlier, but I am confident that if you knew of her sins, you’d approve of how I handled this.”
Fu Yong’s gaze was unsightly. “You’re saying you already killed her?”
Mu Bai nodded.
“You wicked creature!” roared Fu Yong, his face ashen. “It’s no wonder the whole sect sees you as a jinx! How could you do something so devoid of conscience?”
“Senior, that evil woman deserved to die,” said Mu Bai.
But before he could explain any further, Fu Yong roared, “You deserve to die! Murderers get the death penalty!”
Boom!
He attacked directly, a radiant silver whip tearing through the sky and cleaving at Mu Bai.
But it was then that an arc of fire exploded into being, effortlessly burning the silver divine radiance into ash.
Fu Yong’s pupils constricted.
Mu Bai had already drawn his saber and readied himself for battle when he froze, too.
A moment later, the two of them saw a slender, graceful figure in the distance, bathed in the light of the heavens. She was a movingly beautiful woman in simple Daoist robes, but her plain attire did nothing to obscure her charms.
Fu Yong looked stricken, and he hurriedly greeted her. “Old servant Fu Yong greets you, Elder Wen.”
Mu Bai sheathed his saber and greeted her too. When he looked at the moving beauty in Daoist robes, there was undisguisable admiration on his brow.
Wen Ruoxue.
A legendary rising star of the Opening Origins Daoist Sect!
Meanwhile, in a place no one could see him—
When Su Yi laid eyes on Wen Ruoxue, he fell into a daze. She seems familiar. It seems I’ve seen her somewhere before.
