Chapter 27: Elli is tired
Chapter 27: Elli is tired
After purchasing everything that could help them for at least one month, Kai made the payment using the system card. He was a little nervous since he wasn’t using it for himself, and there was just a slim chance there was for the system would block the purchase.
While he had the amount in the account to cover it, he didn’t want to have his card declined in front of so many people...especially Jean.
Thankfully, it worked, and the cashier was quite content with the purchase, offering them a few discount coupons and advising them to even have the emergency ration card.
"What does it do?" Kai seemed interested, so he asked; meanwhile, to the side, Jean filled out the address slip.
"If a crisis arises in the locality, and we can’t have suppliers providing us with stock, we generally elevate the rate to sky-high." The cashier explained, "However, those with this card could buy the things at the same rate."
Kai fell into deep thought hearing that. Right. Dungeons appear without warning and anywhere in the world. Despite how secure their new residence might be, if a dungeon appeared there, Jean and Elara would be in danger.
"Sir?" The cashier called out, breaking his daze.
Kai shook his head and said. "I will think about it and contact you." Naturally, since he was leaving this locality soon, the emergency card would be of no use to him.
Soon, Jean filled out the form and took the baby carrier from Kai since he was holding the bags of groceries.
As they started walking back to their house, Jean said with a soft smile, "You don’t understand what you have done for me today."
Kai shrugged. "I just did a little compared to what they did. So don’t think about it."
Jean shook her head. "No, Kai." She turned to him and added. "The decision I made for myself was my responsibility, and those who helped me- you had no reason to be thankful for them. And yet you helped them just because I told you I knew them."
Smiling, she added, "Today, seeing you, made me hope that our daughter grows up to be like you. You are very kind, Kai."
The man was a little embarrassed now as he chuckled faintly and said, "You are pretty kind too. Just a little mean at times, but overall quite good."
Jean froze briefly and then raised a brow. "Mean, you say? Is that your old grudge?"
Kai shrugged. "I mean...back then, you always glared at me as if I had stolen your money."
Jean was flustered. "That’s because..." She paused and exhaled a sigh. "Well, I would sound much like my father, but I used to see you as my rival, and I hated it when I saw the absence of the same rivalry from your side."
Groaning she added. "You just didn’t care about it at all."
Kai was completely clueless about the rivalry, truthfully.
"I...just did the only thing I was good at. I never cared about ranks, to be honest."
"That’s how a genius speaks," Jean complained, eyes narrowed.
Kai was really seeing her new side today. After an emotional Jean, he could see a competitive one.
Soon, they reached the house and distributed their roles.
The baby was quite tired, so Kai took it upon himself to feed her the meal he had prepared earlier that day before, helping her sleep.
Meanwhile, Jean got busy with the celebratory meal she promised.
"Don’t overwork yourself since it’s just the two of us," Kai told her as he sat Elara down at the table, tied the apron around her neck loosely, and picked up the bowl of rice and vegetables.
"Don’t worry. I won’t make anything fancy." Jean assured him and began chopping vegetables first.
Meanwhile, Kai slowly brought the spoon closer to Elara and asked. "Who wants some rice? Come on, be a good girl now."
Elara slowly parted her small lips and ate half the spoon first.
And just then,
[Task: Feed your child for the first time]
[Reward would be added in the list being prepared...]
"..." Kai momentarily paused, seeing that. Just what in the world was the system deciding for so long?
He was rather impatient to know about the reward than excited. It’s like it was taking too much time unwrapping a gift.
Shaking his head, he was about to feed Elara more, but then,
"Mm..." The little one held his hand and rested her face on his wrist.
Not comfortable, she adjusted herself a little, pulling his hand closer so she could rest her head on it better
Her lips parted in a slow yawn, droopy eyes finally closing as she gave in to her slumber.
Kai could only stare at her with plain adoration and warmth in his eyes.
Jean also noticed the silence and turned...only to find herself smiling as the two adults exchanged a glance.
Jean slowly took out her phone to take a picture; meanwhile, Kai just watched his daughter with all love and tenderness.
Seriously, Kai has been blessed by an angel.

A/N: If you are wondering when the action scenes would begin, then don’t worry; Kai himself understands the necessity of becoming stronger. And soon, he would get a much stronger motivation too 👀
