Chapter 382: Understanding Something from the Past
"...Saluvia, what the hell is this that happened to her? Why did she suddenly end up like this?" I ask Saluvia in frustration. Kali is asleep in another room while Saluvia examines Evelyn's body, which changed out of nowhere.
I was gently tending to her body and caressing her cute face while she slept, but then changes started happening at an alarming rate all over her body.
She got bigger. Her horns, wings, teeth, and nails changed, and her power skyrocketed. Not to mention these weird tattoos that appeared all over her body before vanishing shortly after — tattoos that completely remind me of the ones Saluvia has on her body.
And since the tattoos reminded me of the ones Saluvia has, I decided to call her over to assess Evelyn's body. But she's been at it way too long, and I'm already getting frustrated and stressed.
Especially because, theoretically, Evelyn's body shouldn't just "change" out of nowhere. Her body should be preserved in the physical state it's in because she's a living puppet.
"...I'm... not sure what to tell you about this. I've never seen anything like it before, but I can indeed see tattoos marked all along the pathways where her magic circulates, and they really are similar to mine. But my tattoos can't produce nearly the same effect as Evelyn's."
"First, I need to make something clear. These tattoos are biological. They're like, for example, the patterns on an octopus that change when it attacks or hides. Plenty of animals have visible 'patterns,' so these aren't ink tattoos or anything magical."
"My tattoos are something from the past. They were a physical trait that maximized magic output and reinforced a few other things in the body, though mine can't be hidden."
"The ones Evelyn has, on the other hand, are much more... precise, if that's the right word. They mark exactly where they're supposed to mark and function properly, unlike mine, while also being able to hide and reveal themselves only with specific magical signals. But normally, Evelyn shouldn't have these."
"After all, these tattoos practically disappeared ten thousand years ago, and only a few tribal demons are rarely born with them — and they generally don't even work. Seeing Evelyn have them, and having them function so well, is strange."
"If I had to mention a time when they were like this, it would be around twenty-five to thirty thousand years ago. The founder of the demonic kingdom who pioneered this continent also had these tattoos, but after that era, they greatly diminished." She explains while touching Evelyn's body.
"Why did they diminish?" I question, wanting to understand everything. And even if I don't like Saluvia, her experience is undeniable.
"Because they were no longer useful. Despite their function aiding magic, it wasn't as necessary after a certain period, when civilization grew and stricter rules reduced the fighting."
"Now, getting back to the matter..."
"Her wings and horns have become better suited for combat — not that it matters when Evelyn doesn't even know how to fight — but her magic has indeed increased significantly. It's now on par with yours, whereas before, Evelyn had less than you." She states it like an evaluation.
'As much magic as me... in seconds...' I take a deep breath. Even if she has more magic, it doesn't matter. She's still bound to me forever, and it's not more power that will help her break free.
"...What could have caused this? And if this body changed, then her other bodies changed too, didn't they?" Rationally, there's no way only this body changed, so I think something happened to Evelyn on the angelic continent. I'll check on Evelyn's body in the castle in the demonic kingdom later.
"Possibly... well, these aren't entirely bad changes. Her health is excellent, and this is unlikely to harm her. Just be a little more careful with the horns and wings so she doesn't hurt anyone, and everything will be fine." Saluvia stops using magic on Evelyn's body as I keep staring at her.
"Are you sure you don't know anything that could have made her end up like this?" When I ask her seriously, Saluvia's gaze falters, as if there's something she doesn't want to say or doesn't want me to know.
"Well... there is something, but it doesn't make sense for it to have happened, and besides, I don't know the details very well. Apparently, demons and angels have a kind of 'primitive' state that can be accessed through the system."
"It's a way of passing the genetics of our ancestors into the future, because over millennia, a lot changes. And to preserve the magical power, genetics, and blood of the ancestors, a kind of 'exchange' could be performed so that this state would be accessed."
"For that, it was necessary for the demonic and angelic rulers to fulfill certain conditions, generally involving both of their magic. I don't know the details, but it was useful for making both of them reach this 'prized genetics' to pass on to the future."
"Of course, that would imply that the queen of the angels currently did something with Evelyn's help, which wouldn't make sense since we're enemies." She explains things about our history that I didn't know.
"Why does it have to be Evelyn? I mean... a demon king or queen." There are clearly holes, and Saluvia is holding back, but I'd rather know everything before pressing her for more, so I keep listening.
"So that it wouldn't be just anyone using it, it was a method of legitimacy. In that sense, Evelyn would kind of end up becoming a distant relative of the original bloodline that came from the same ruler who founded this kingdom on this continent."
"Think of it like taking two people, taking their most distant relatives, and somehow forcibly joining that lineage. Demons are made of magic, so it's not impossible."
"Angels, despite not being made of Hikishin like us demons, still have a very deep connection with magic, so they also end up being able to do this."
"It would be like a potion that changes your gender. The difference is that it literally changes the family you have ties to, awakening the strength and traits of that lineage."
"And these supposed 'traits' — do they have any use?" I ask, looking at Evelyn, who has changed relatively.
"Mainly in combat. Millennia ago, there was a lot of fighting, little technology, little socialization, and society was chaotic, dominated by the strongest. So evolutionarily, everything was focused on fighting and surviving."
"But they wouldn't be as useful nowadays, because they would make people more aggressive and territorial. Not to mention, they're traits from an era when they were necessary."
"Nowadays, no one needs that. It's kind of useless, in a way, since Evelyn doesn't even know how to fight. Combat-focused changes don't help her — it's almost a regression." I bite my lips when I hear that.
"So she supposedly inherited things from the past that will only hinder her daily life?"
"Something like that. Well... extra magic is always good, so there are advantages. It would be stupid for it to be something that only gives disadvantages. The point is that most of the advantages are useless for someone like Evelyn."
"Besides, it was made more to pass on this prized genetics that grants more magic, strength, and general combat capabilities. In other words, it wasn't made with the goal of making the person stronger, but rather to preserve the original bloodline of demons and angels."
"It just so happens that this lineage is powerful, so the person ends up gaining more power as a consequence. It's merely a side effect. If Evelyn has new children from this point on, they will inherit some of these tribal traits." I can understand where Saluvia is going with this, even though I have no idea why this happened.
"Considering everything you've said, then Evelyn hasn't gained a new race being added to the system. She kept the ones she already has intact. This is just an 'evolution' of what it means to be a demon?"
"Like taking, for example, the common ancestor of a rat, and the rat gaining something from its most ancient predecessor."
"Exactly. It's just a small general evolution aimed at survival and combat from an era when it was necessary. Speaking of which, considering Evelyn is a dragon, this 'evolution' will make her even more possessive over her riches, like a treasure hoard."
"Over everything she's accumulated, over you, and over Kali in general. So her desire to possess things will increase like a dragon's, but she didn't turn into some new type of dragon or anything like that."
"She's still the same Evelyn as always. And the physical changes, despite some that will be a hindrance — like the sharper wings and sharper horns — still aren't anything that requires special attention."
"You, Esther, will just need to be a little more careful during intimate acts so you don't get cut or pierced, and you'll need to take more time watching Kali so she doesn't hurt herself on Evelyn's body."
"...Whatever. I can just force Evelyn to say what happened when she wakes up, so let's ignore this. You can leave now. I'll take care of Evelyn. I need to get new clothes for her because her current ones don't fit right." I tell her, wanting to be alone. I'm very worried about Evelyn in the war.
But if she "evolved" and got stronger, it means her chances of winning have increased. So all I can do is wait for some news. As far as I know, the war battle has already started, and Evelyn has already advanced to fight against the queen of the angels.
So I'll just keep rooting for her victory while I take care of the kingdom and Kali.
