Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking

Chapter 198: Because That Dog Had Rabies, Right?

Jane Lancaster never hesitated to act.

Something was clearly wrong with these dogs. The sight of blood only made them more frenzied.

Getting hit several times only served to awaken their innate ferocity, and they roared as they charged again and again.

They had locked onto the mother and daughter as their targets, seeming to know they were the weakest, and refused to let go.

Jane Lancaster, in turn, locked onto the dog she had just stabbed. Attack the weakest one first!

The city had been strictly regulating knives recently, so she couldn’t buy the long watermelon knife that had been so useful in her childhood. Instead, she had specially chosen a boning knife sharp enough to cut through iron.

This time, her blade slashed out. In the hazy night, fresh blood sprayed across the ground. The dog let out a wretched howl and collapsed, its injured foreleg no longer able to support it.

A sharp whistle cut through the night. Aside from the injured dog, which glanced back, the other two were too busy with their attack to react at all.

But even that dog only hesitated for two seconds before suddenly lunging in a different direction, attempting to break through the bodyguards’ line.

Quick as a flash, Jane Lancaster struck again. This time, the dog’s belly was sliced open.

A blood-curdling scream echoed through the night sky.

Then, something unexpected happened. After being knocked back, the other two dogs suddenly turned and began to viciously attack the injured one.

"Cover the child’s eyes!" Jasper Sterling warned.

Alan Wallace snapped to his senses and fumbled to cover his child’s eyes. The next second, a suit jacket was tossed over, draping over the terrified, crying little girl’s head.

The woman, though enduring her own pain, gently covered her child’s ears through the jacket. "It’s okay, sweetie. Don’t be scared. Mommy’s here."

The couple held their child securely in their arms, shielding her from the horrific scene outside.

The screams gradually faded, and the smell of blood filled the air. The bodyguards felt an unreal sense of watching a nature documentary, and their vigilance slackened slightly.

’These two dogs absolutely cannot be left alive!’

Jane Lancaster tightened her grip on her knife and lunged at one of the dogs.

To her surprise, however, Jasper Sterling was no slower. He simultaneously swung the club he was holding, attacking the other dog.

"Stop! Stop it!" Seeing his two dogs losing the fight, a man rushed out to stop them.

"Hey, let’s talk this out! They’re just animals, they don’t know any better. There’s no need to kill them, right? I imported these dogs from abroad. I’ve sunk hundreds of thousands into raising them. They’re very expensive!"

’Why’d you stop hiding? Is it because your dogs are losing and you’re afraid of a financial loss?’

Jane Lancaster paused and glanced at him, not the least bit surprised.

’I knew it was you. Some "heroic good samaritan." A real person might run away at first, but they’d come back to save lives.’

’But you just ran away after causing trouble, and only came back because you were afraid your property would be destroyed.’

Alan Wallace was furious. "You’re the owner? Why didn’t you have your dogs on a leash? My wife and child were almost mauled to death!"

The man in the leather jacket forced a smile. "I’m sorry, I’ll pay for the medical bills. Please, calm down, sir."

’What’s that little injury on your wife compared to my losses?’ the man thought, anxious but also dismissive.

The more he thought about it, the more his heart ached. Tonight was so unlucky. Losing one dog... he was already worried about how he was going to explain it.

He had to save the remaining two, no matter what!

The man took out his whistle and blew it, urging the two dogs to leave.

The two dogs were injured, but they remained crouched on the ground, growling lowly, their ferocity undiminished.

Jane Lancaster said, "These two dogs should be put down."

’You still want to save these dogs? Dream on! Haven’t you heard? I’ve been killing dogs since I was eight.’

She thought this nonchalantly, but her arm ached so badly she could barely hold the knife.

The prop had worn off. The backlash was beginning.

"Okay, okay, I’ll definitely keep a better handle on them when I get back. I’ll use leashes and..." The man’s voice trailed off as he stared at Jasper Sterling in disbelief.

"How could you kill my dog?" He was about to lose his mind.

Jane Lancaster froze. She looked at the young man holding the knife. The night was dark, but the chill in his eyes was darker still.

He walked straight toward Jane Lancaster, his voice softer than a spring breeze. "Sorry, I had to borrow your knife."

Jane Lancaster: "Oh, it’s okay."

’Why did he do it? Shouldn’t it have been me?’ Her mind was a complete blank.

Jasper Sterling’s beautiful peach-blossom eyes suddenly curved into a smile, dazzlingly gentle.

He gently raised his hand and wiped a drop of blood from her face. "It’s all over now."

His long lashes lowered as he looked at the smear of blood on the blade, a cold rage churning in his eyes.

Jasper Sterling knew that Jane Lancaster had always been secretly accused of being cold-blooded, heartless, and vicious to the bone.

An eight-year-old girl killing a dog—it sounded so sensational. Those who knew about it had secretly branded her as cruel and malicious.

But only he knew how resilient and brave she was, how gentle and tolerant, even if that gentleness hadn’t shone on him for many years.

This accusation had silently smeared her name for years, making her endure far too much unjust criticism.

There had to be a reason why she still killed Prince, even as Alvin Lancaster had screamed himself hoarse.

And now, he knew that reason—

"Jay, tell me. Back then, when you killed Prince, it was because the dog had rabies, wasn’t it?"

Jane Lancaster was stunned.

「On the speeding car.」

Alvin Lancaster gripped the golf club in his hand, his face tense.

Beside him, Jean Hughes turned her head and couldn’t help but chuckle. "Why are you still carrying that golf club?"

Alvin Lancaster looked a little embarrassed. "Uh, it makes me feel safe."

He wanted to give the golf club to his sister.

Even though he was the older brother, he wasn’t nearly as steady, precise, or ruthless as his sister.

Setting aside the past, this time, he fully supported his sister bashing the vicious dogs’ heads in!

Biting people was wrong, no matter what. And to cause two people to be maimed? The nature of it was too vile!

Although Alvin Lancaster loved dogs, he didn’t defend them blindly. An animal’s life was precious, and a human’s life was precious. To him, all life was paramount.

"I’m sorry. Back then, I only agreed to let them starve Prince for a few days to appease Jim Jenson because I heard Prince had bitten someone. I never thought he would deliberately torment you." Jean Hughes’s apologetic voice sounded by his ear. "I’m so sorry about Prince’s death."

Alvin Lancaster pressed his lips together. He should have said it was okay, but he couldn’t bring himself to say the words.

Jean Hughes noticed the strange look on his face. "You don’t seem to blame your sister."

Alvin Lancaster: "Why would I blame her? She did it to save me."

He was actually lying. Deep down, he did blame her a little. He blamed her for always taking things to the extreme, leaving no room for compromise.

Alvin Lancaster also knew he was indecisive and lacked resolve, which made him seem weak.

On one hand, he swore to trust his sister; on the other, he was wavering. Could everything she did really be right?

He was truly heartbroken. The mere thought of Prince made his chest ache, and he would probably hold onto that grudge for a long time.

But even if his sister was wrong, as her older brother, he should forgive her, not stab her in the back in front of others.

He had secretly sworn this to himself before coming here, and he wouldn’t change his mind, no matter what.

Jean Hughes leaned in slightly and asked in a low voice, "Is it because you suspect Prince was infected with rabies?"
