Chapter 184: Is This How You Repay?
"Why would you do that?" Perhaps because the other man had always been so gentle, Alvin Lancaster found the courage to question him.
"That assistant is just a regular employee. It’s not like he took the picture on purpose. Why did you have to smash his phone?"
Despite causing such a serious outcome, the man didn’t seem to feel the least bit guilty.
Lana Sterling cut in, "Hold on, what are you trying to say?"
How dare this person question her nephew? ’I don’t even have the guts to do that!’
"It’s fine. Let him continue," Jasper Sterling said. He also wanted to hear what other brilliant insights the man had to offer.
His tone was mild as he humbly inquired, "What else do you think I did wrong?"
Since he put it that way, Alvin Lancaster saw no reason to hold back.
"Even if you were upset and just had to smash it, that phone only cost thirteen thousand. If you smashed it, you should have just paid for it. That little bit of money isn’t even enough for one of your meals, but to someone else, it’s half a year’s living expenses..."
"Alvin Lancaster, shut your mouth!" Jane Lancaster couldn’t listen anymore.
Stunned by her outburst, Alvin Lancaster shut his mouth.
His sister had never once called him by his full name in his entire life... and he had never seen such a fierce expression on her face.
Jane Lancaster stared at him coldly. "Is being ungrateful what the Lancaster family taught you? Someone was kind enough to treat you to a meal, and this is how you repay them?"
’It was just a short video, and he’s already showering them with pity. He really is a brainless fence-sitter.’
’Would someone who’s truly struggling to eat afford to spend thirteen thousand on the latest phone model?’
Alvin Lancaster’s expression stiffened. He said defiantly, "I can go splits on the meal."
It wasn’t like he couldn’t afford it. He would never act as tyrannically as Jasper Sterling.
Willow Summers piped up, "Do you even know what happened? Why are you here barking like a dog?"
In her opinion, Jasper Sterling had done nothing wrong. That guy clearly wasn’t a good person—he had been secretly filming, acted incredibly arrogant, had a short temper, and even almost hit someone.
Lana Sterling had a sudden idea. "Oh, I have a video right here. Do you want to see what happened?"
She eagerly took out her phone, tapped on the video, and started playing it.
"When Jane took the phone to delete the video, that guy came forward looking to start a fight. President Sterling was just stopping him. As for what happened after, well, he should’ve held on to his phone tighter."
Willow Summers added with a clear head, "Or, to put it another way, if he hadn’t been trying to act all tough and aggressive, the accident wouldn’t have happened at all."
"You don’t even have the full picture, and you’re here questioning others?"
Willow Summers couldn’t help but frown, a hint of contempt in her eyes.
’What kind of person is this? He looks normal enough, but I can’t believe he’s like this.’
Cornered by their questions, Alvin Lancaster took a few steps back. He hadn’t realized that was what had happened.
Jane Lancaster said, "Excuse me, but Jasper Sterling never said he wouldn’t pay. I was the one who told him not to."
She gave a little smile. "After all, I have a rather dark mind. I suspected the guy was trying to extort a huge sum of money by intentionally getting his phone broken."
’I’m just that petty and mean. Not like you, who goes around being a sucker for everyone every day.’
’Mrs. Everett was the same way before, playing the victim to milk everyone for sympathy. You really are just a little boy who will forever pity the ’weak’.’
’I guess it’s my fault for getting rid of Mrs. Everett so early. Otherwise, how could you be standing on the sidelines now, watching the drama with Clayton and Caleb Lowell unfold?’
Alvin Lancaster: "..."
He couldn’t help but feel a little flustered, vaguely aware that he had done something wrong.
"Jay, I didn’t mean to blame you..."
He was just raising a reasonable question. After all, Luna Morgan was lying in the hospital right now with her condition unknown, and he was genuinely angry and furious.
Of course, the person he hated most in all this was Una Holt. She was rich and unscrupulous, hitting someone with her car, and then driving away as if it had nothing to do with her after Luna Morgan was hurt. Her malice was plain to see.
But he also deeply empathized with the assistant’s accusation.
Working for a boss, getting bullied by that boss was one thing, but then to be toyed with by the rich on top of that... it all sounded so pitiful.
Una Holt had shamelessly fled the scene, but the hotel had already called the police. She couldn’t escape responsibility.
In comparison, Jasper Sterling was the one who truly got away with it, bearing no responsibility at all, just sitting here lightly, watching the drama unfold.
That’s what made him seem particularly detestable.
He felt his questioning was perfectly reasonable. Hadn’t his sister complained about Jasper Sterling in her thoughts before?
Jasper Sterling lowered his gaze, concealing the coldness in his eyes.
’So this is the kind of malice Jane Lancaster faces at home every day?’
He found the Lancaster family to be truly interesting.
On the surface, everyone doted on their only sister, but in reality, what truly beloved child needed to repeatedly endure, give way, and lick their wounds in solitude?
"Uncle Lynn, the check, please," Jasper Sterling said, standing up.
Everyone else had already finished eating; they were just waiting for Alvin Lancaster to slowly finish his meal.
As Jasper Sterling stood, Jane Lancaster stood up too. Grabbing her things, she was genuinely angry and had no intention of maintaining her usual persona. "Willow, let’s go."
Willow Summers shot Alvin Lancaster a glare. ’This guy is so annoying!’
Lana Sterling hurried to follow. She couldn’t hold back and turned to ask, "What right do you have to criticize others? Are those people any of your business?"
Before Alvin Lancaster could answer, Lana Sterling added, "You’re insane!"
"...I’m sorry." A faint apology came from behind them.
Jane Lancaster didn’t even turn her head.
But Jasper Sterling paused, turned back, walked up to Alvin Lancaster, and asked in a voice only the two of them could hear, "When that man accused someone of smashing his phone, who was the first person you suspected?"
Alvin Lancaster froze for a moment, then immediately took two steps back.
The first person he suspected... was, of course, Jane Lancaster.
Jasper Sterling wasn’t surprised. The man wasn’t good at hiding his thoughts, and the look in his eyes at that moment had betrayed him.
"How interesting. A baseless accusation from a complete stranger, and the first person you suspect is your own sister. Is she really that willful and malicious in your eyes?"
It was because she was strong in every way—rich, smart, and deeply loved.
—That was why they would fiercely pity every "weakling" who came into conflict with her.
Alvin Lancaster was overcome with shame, his voice as faint as a mosquito’s buzz. "I didn’t mean to..."
Jasper Sterling suddenly pulled back, his voice returning to its normal volume.
"But you don’t need to apologize. You were right. I did it on purpose."
The young man’s charming eyes curved, brimming with a smile that held no apology. "My character is just that poor, I’m afraid. My apologies."
—
Willow Summers hurried forward and took Jane Lancaster’s arm.
"Alright, don’t be angry anymore. It’s not worth it over someone like him," she said, trying to comfort her.
It was the first time she had ever seen Jane Lancaster so angry.
Jane Lancaster stopped and squeezed her eyes shut. "I’m fine now."
Willow Summers said, "My parents and my brother always side with outsiders over me. I figured it out later on, though. It was never about them not knowing right from wrong; it was purely for their own pride. They’d just sacrifice me to earn a single word of praise from others. That’s why I never get angry over idiots."
After speaking, she thought for a moment. Something seemed a little off.
The Lancaster family was famous for doting on their daughter, and her brothers were all crazy about spoiling their sister. She couldn’t really compare them to her own family.
She quickly apologized, "Sorry, your brother isn’t the same as my brother..."
