Emperor of the Source

Chapter 441: The Will of Time’s Verdict

The walls of unmoving golden light surrounding every echo of Adrian's body sealed each fragment of his existence within an isolated temporal state. His physical form, mana, life force, thoughts, memories, and consciousness remained visible to one another, yet every component occupied a different position within his personal chronology, separated by barriers that prevented them from naturally returning to a shared present.

Adrian tightened his will around the principle he had just comprehended and began drawing every displaced part of himself inward. His heartbeat, breath, mana, life force, memory, and thought approached one another through the sealed radiance. The golden echoes trembled as the distances between their individual moments narrowed, and for an instant, the scattered states aligned so closely that Adrian believed the Epoch Crucible was about to yield.

The moment they touched, the fragile order collapsed. Pain tore through Adrian's body as mana belonging to a later state was forced into channels from an earlier one. His heartbeat tried to complete in the same instant as the impulse that should have caused it, while his life force pressed a completed change into flesh that had not yet undergone the process.

Even his memories began folding over one another, because the experience, the awareness of that experience, and the recollection it created could not all occupy an identical position without losing the connections between them.

Adrian stopped the convergence before it destroyed the remaining order. The golden echoes separated again, but they no longer held the clean distinctions they had possessed at the beginning. One carried his current body with mana from several moments ahead. Another held a memory of the pain before the injury that had produced it. A third contained the intention to withdraw his power after the withdrawal had already occurred.

His first answer had been wrong. He had understood that every part of him needed to return to one continuous present, but he had mistaken continuity for sameness. A living existence was not a collection of processes occurring at one identical instant. Mana moved before the body responded to it. An experience occurred before consciousness understood it, and understanding existed before memory preserved it. If every state were compressed into the same temporal point, the relationships that made them parts of a single life would disappear.

The Epoch Crucible granted him no pause in which to contemplate the correction.

The Will of Time shifted the divided histories again, drawing Adrian's physical body farther ahead while forcing his cultivation foundation backward. His Source Seed retained rules acquired in a later state, but portions of the mana channels connected to it reverted toward an earlier structure that had never supported those rules.

Adrian attempted to repair the mana first, guiding each current toward the physical channels capable of containing it, but that adjustment displaced the life force sustaining those same channels. When he corrected the life force, his heartbeat moved beyond the awareness meant to regulate it. Every answer changed the conditions of several other problems, and the interlocking disorder grew faster than he could repair its individual parts.

Adrian finally understood why cultivators who reached this threshold after tens of thousands of years of preparation could still die within it.

The trial removed the shared personal history they had relied upon throughout their entire lives without ever perceiving it. It then transformed every attempted correction into another change that could be severed from its cause. A single error might leave behind a living body whose cultivation, memories, life force, and consciousness belonged to entirely different versions of the person who had entered.

The pressure deepened. Adrian's perception fractured across the golden echoes, and for the first time, more than one of them believed itself to be the present Adrian. One remembered entering the second level but not reaching the Crucible. Another possessed his newly acquired comprehension without the experiences that had led him to it. A third carried the memory ocean he had taken from Tenyz, but not the certainty that those millions of years belonged to someone else.

That final echo was the most dangerous.

Tenyz's experiences surged through it without the boundaries Adrian had created to isolate them. Ancient names, wars, ambitions, hatreds, pleasures, and cruelties pressed against his identity, searching for an empty position within the broken chronology where they could establish themselves as his own past.

Memories of the Providence Hub attempted to precede Adrian's childhood on Earth. The emotions of a Yiphraen heir tried to attach themselves to experiences Adrian had never lived. For several disorienting moments, foreign relationships felt older and more fundamental than his love for his parents, Hestia, Aerin, and the people of the Origin Sect.

The Source remained inactive, and Adrian did not call upon it.

If he revealed the full presence of the Source, the Will of Time would almost certainly recognize its origin and submit rather than continue the test. However, Adrian was currently inside the territory of an Upper Major Sect governed by a sovereign at the Weave stage. The trial arrays were already monitoring him, and he did not know what other entities might be observing from beyond the phenomenon zone.

He refused to expose the Source unless doing so became his final option.

Instead, Adrian turned his fractured awareness toward the golden point resting at the center of his consciousness.

It had first appeared when the Chime resounded through his mind and had grown denser when his consciousness advanced to the Anchor stage. It supported the billions of connections gathered through the Crown of the Source, had endured the crushing flood of Tenyz's memories, and remained the point toward which Adrian's sense of self returned whenever foreign experiences threatened to drown it.

The Epoch Crucible had scattered his thoughts, memories, and awareness across incompatible rates of Time, but the golden point still carried the imprint of the single consciousness to which every fragment belonged.

Adrian stopped attempting to drag the divided histories into one moment.

He placed the golden point at the center of his perception and used it as a witness to the sequence connecting them.

"Continuity does not require every part of me to exist at the same instant," Adrian realized as the fractured echoes pulled against one another. "It requires every change to remain connected to what came before it and what follows."

Pale-golden Kaalatva mana emerged from the Time chamber of his Source Seed. Rather than binding the echoes together by force, Adrian extended the mana from his golden dot and began tracing the path of his own existence. The intention to move came first. Willforce carried that intention into a command. Mana answered the command and passed through his channels. His body changed beneath its passage, life force preserved that change, consciousness experienced it, and memory recorded what had occurred.

The Will of Time disrupted the sequence before it could close, placing the memory ahead of the experience and the physical response behind the mana that depended upon it. Adrian felt the path breaking and altered the relationship between those moments. He did not return them to one rate. He let the memory remain farther ahead, slowed the mana, and drew the bodily change forward until cause and consequence touched again without losing their distinct positions.

One echo merged into him, and the trial immediately shifted a second history. Adrian rebuilt it in the same manner, using the golden dot to identify the consciousness to which every state belonged and his new Kaalatva comprehension to restore the order between them. Each completed connection strengthened the next. Breath returned to the lungs that had initiated it, the heartbeat followed the impulse that produced it, and foreign memories settled behind the boundary of the life that had acquired them.

The strain did not ease. Every successful restoration caused the Will to divide a subtler process, until Adrian was preserving changes so fine that ordinary perception would never have distinguished them. He protected only the connection that placed each change within his history.

The final echo stood before him with his body, foundation, life force, memories, and consciousness arranged in the correct sequence but separated by impossible distances of Time. Adrian drew one continuous current through them. The golden dot held his identity steady, Kaalatva preserved every relationship, and the divided states returned one after another rather than collapsing together.

His next heartbeat followed his previous one.

The wall of unmoving light shattered into a boundless stream of golden essence. Every displaced history converged upon Adrian in its proper order, leaving no stray memory, abandoned future, or earlier self behind. The vast Will of Time rested upon him for one final instant, examining the continuity he had rebuilt, before its indifferent presence withdrew from the phenomenon zone.

Within the Source Seed, the scattered fragments inside the Time chamber connected into a complete Advanced Galactic structure. Adrian felt possibilities unfolding from that knowledge, ways to synchronize his flesh with accelerated perception, stabilize more complex temporal regions, and preserve living beings through far greater differences in flow.

Back within the silver-white metallic chamber, the dark-golden wall covering Khyron and Vaedra's projection split apart without warning. The monitoring runes surged back to life, revealing countless temporal strands arranged around a single golden dot. Rather than scattering into incompatible histories, every strand now entered and departed from that anchor as part of one uninterrupted sequence.

The recovered monitoring record exposed what the original entrance scan had failed to reveal.

Khyron and Vaedra were both Astral Stage sovereigns. Neither required more than a glance to recognize the golden point as a consciousness anchor that had first emerged through the Chime and already developed to the Anchor stage. The temporal strands surrounding it also carried the unmistakable stability of an Astral cultivation foundation.

The candidate had never been the High Rule Stage wanderer suggested by his outward fluctuations.

He had concealed his cultivation before entering the trial.

Neither Khyron nor Vaedra interpreted that discovery as a threat. Concealing cultivation, appearance, identity, and lineage was an ordinary precaution throughout the universe, particularly among wanderers travelling through unfamiliar sectors. Aeon had shown no hostility toward the Kaalatva Sect, had arrived through one of the seven keys Master Roo personally forged, and had obeyed every condition Khyron placed before him.

The concealment mattered only because it explained how the candidate possessed a consciousness anchor strong enough to preserve his identity after the Return Array failed.

But it did not explain the speed of his comprehension.

The two Astral sovereigns watched the completed trial record in silence.

They had witnessed talents praised as peerless spend millions of years approaching Advanced Galactic Kaalatva. Even disciples born inside the Kaalatva Sect, surrounded by temporal inheritances from childhood, required vast periods of preparation before facing the Epoch Crucible.

Nothing in their personal experience or within the trial records known to them described a cultivator entering with Planetary comprehension, reaching final verification in 6.8 seconds, and surviving the division of his chronology through his own understanding.

The text upon the terminal changed.

› Epoch Crucible completed. Advanced Galactic Kaalatva verified.

Khyron slowly lowered the hand he had kept poised over the Return Array.

"He passed," he said.

The sealed second doorway reappeared at the center of the metallic chamber. Golden light gathered within its frame before Adrian emerged from the phenomenon zone.

He stopped several paces before Khyron and Vaedra and inclined his head with the same restrained courtesy he had displayed upon first arriving.

"You have passed the Epoch Crucible and attained Advanced Galactic comprehension of Kaalatva. Under the terms established for this trial, you have earned the right to enter the Kaalatva Sect as a disciple." Khyron said.

Adrian had anticipated those words from the moment he understood what the seven rings were intended to open. However, hearing them after receiving the sect's Advanced Galactic inheritance made the problem impossible to defer.

He had sought the knowledge because the Origin Sect required Time. The trial had given him precisely what Fate and Causality had guided him here to obtain.

However, accepting discipleship had never been part of his plans.

"I am honored by the offer," Adrian replied, "but I cannot accept it."

Adrian allowed the suppression around his cultivation to dissolve. The false High Rule fluctuations vanished, and the quiet weight of his Astral foundation spread through the metallic chamber. He let his consciousness unfold just enough for the Anchor-stage density of the golden dot within it to become perceptible, then drew its presence back into himself.

"I am Aeon of the Origin Sect," he continued. "I am also the Founder of Origin. I did not conceal my cultivation with the intention of acting against the Kaalatva Sect. I travel beyond my own territory beneath this identity because revealing every part of oneself within an unfamiliar universe is rarely wise."

"You do not need to justify that choice," Khyron replied. "Cultivation concealment is common among those who cross unknown sectors. Your disguise is not the issue before us."

Adrian inclined his head in acknowledgment. "Then I will address the real issue. I understood that this trial existed to recruit disciples, but I entered because Kaalatva is essential to an inheritance I am constructing for my Origin Sect. The path of the seventh ring explains how I arrived before the door, but the choice to use the opportunity was mine."

He met the gazes of both Astral sovereigns while keeping his aura restrained. "I am willing to repay what I have received through an equitable exchange or service that does not require me to join your sect. If a debt must be recorded, then record it against me as the Founder of Origin."

Khyron studied Adrian for several moments before speaking. "You returned the missing key, completed a legacy that had remained unfinished for millions of years, and entered only after I admitted you. You did not break into our trial, and nothing you learned was given without a test."

"That is true," Vaedra said calmly. "It is equally true that the founder of an independent sect now possesses Advanced Galactic Kaalatva while refusing the discipleship for which this trial was created. Neither Khyron nor I possess the authority to determine what obligation remains between Origin and Kaalatva."

Adrian accepted the distinction without argument. "Then take me to the one who does."

Vaedra placed one hand upon the projection. The record of Adrian's Epoch Crucible folded inward and condensed into a dark-golden seal. It preserved the 6.8-second ascent, the failure of the Return Array, the continuity he had reconstructed, and the true cultivation foundation he had revealed.

She sent the seal beyond the metallic chamber through a hidden channel whose destination Adrian could not perceive.

For several breaths, no response returned. Then the silver-white walls trembled, and a pressure far deeper than the Astral presences of Khyron and Vaedra descended into the chamber. A third doorway formed behind Vaedra, its interior filled with dense golden light.

A voice emerged from beyond the threshold.

"Bring the Founder of Origin before me."
