Chapter 395: Warden of Vigilance and the Seventh Vein
Chapter 395: Warden of Vigilance and the Seventh Vein
“Are you sure you will be fine?”
Morvain questioned as she stared at Kael.
“Yes.”
Kael nodded, and seeing his confidence, the rest of the elders couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed.
“How are you even doing this?”
Aelindra questioned, unable to control herself. The rest of the Elders seemed curious too.
Right now, the Matriarch, the Elders, Kael, and Lavinia were back in the Elders Hall, leaving Jivian and his family in their home.
Roan had agreed to help them; however, doing everything on a whim was foolish. Since they had gotten a chance, the Matriarch wanted to get everyone’s opinion and come up with a strong plan.
That decision itself, however, had some problems.
Discussions needed time, and they did not have that. Roan could only hold off until sunrise. The Drakthar people on the other side would know that no Velmourn Celebration continued after sunrise, and because of the habit ingrained into Roan, the moment he returned, the first thing he would do would be ’talking’ to his god.
Delaying the message until sunrise would cause suspicion.
Another problem was the people—
They weren’t sure if Jivian and his family were the only ones reporting to Drakthar. There could be more spies amongst them, and now that they were here, discussing, the spy could potentially inform the enemy, ruining their plans before they even began.
But when this problem was raised, Kael shook his head.
’That won’t happen.’
After all, his ’eyes’ were still following the Velmourns, even now.
The moment the traitor acted, they would be caught, even if Kael himself was currently here, participating in the discussion.
It was something as unsettling as it was impressive.
“Secret.”
Kael answered Aelindra’s question with a chuckle.
He obviously wasn’t planning on revealing all his cards, and the Elders could see it as well.
“You still plan to keep an eye on all of us, don’t you?”
Draksis muttered in dissatisfaction.
“Are you sure Jivian and his family are the only ones?”
Lavinia questioned back.
“How long will this continue then?”
The Forge Master questioned.
“I cannot answer that.”
The Mage shook her head.
“Do you… plan on doing this forever?”
Draksis narrowed his eyes.
“Our resources aren’t infinite either, Elder.”
Lavinia shook her head.
“What we are currently doing requires quite a lot of resources, and we are burning it for everyone’s sake without complaints.”
“…”
Draksis turned silent at those words. The Elders all stared at each other as well, uncomfortable.
They weren’t fools. Even they could see how keeping an eye on ten thousand people through some mystical, undetectable means would burn tons of resources.
What Kael and Lavinia were doing was important, even if it made them uncomfortable. They weren’t in the position to say anything.
And to think their method produced results within just a few hours of implementing it, it was something far more efficient than anything they had ever thought or heard of.
Even if they weren’t sure if Jivian and his Slate were actually reporting everything to Drakthar, it was still a discovery that couldn’t be ignored.
For the Velmourns, Kael and Lavinia were indeed doing God’s work.
“Although we can calculate and give an estimated number as to how long our resources would last, the two of us have made a consensus decision that we will not be revealing that information to any of you.”
Lavinia then looked into Draksis’s eyes and—
“As we said before,
None of you will be an exception.”
“…you are still suspicious of us.”
Draksis muttered, and the Mage simply shrugged,
“Think of it as you like.”
“…”
Silence fell in the Hall.
To think a foreigner would talk to an elder in such a manner.
It was quite uncomfortable but…
None of the Elders could say anything.
“Alright, we are not here to discuss this.”
Suddenly, Morvain spoke up, ending the discussion on this topic. The Matriarch’s interruption alone made it clear what her decision was.
She had allowed them to continue their watch the way they wanted to, and there was nothing the Elders could say about it.
In the end, Draksis lowered his head with a sigh, dropping the topic just as Morvain wanted him to.
Morvain nodded at that, she then looked at Kael and—
“Alright then, since you produced results much faster than any of us were expecting, I believe you deserve a reward.”
“A reward?”
Kael tilted his head.
“From this day forth, you will be the Warden of Vigilance.”
Morvain declared.
“As the Warden of Vigilance, you will now be responsible for Internal Surveillance. You are authorized to observe, monitor, and investigate any Velmourn—be it the elders of the Iron Council, the soldiers of the Watch, men, women, children, or even the Matriarch or the Future Patriarchs—for signs of treachery, hidden loyalties, or forbidden contact with outsiders.”
The Matriarch created a new position specifically for Kael alone. A position that… seemed to have quite a lot of power.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say it was the most powerful position after the Matriarch’s herself. In some cases, it seemed to have more power than even the Matriarch’s position.
“You will be the Council’s Unseen Eyes. With our permission, you may deploy any surveillance methods to ensure ongoing loyalty within Ashen Heights.
You are, however, not allowed to punish the accused directly. You will submit formal Accusation Reports to the Iron Council, who will act accordingly.
You will also act as the bridge between the Iron Council and the Watch, occasionally accompanying scouts, investigating breaches, or responding to suspicious incidents.
These will be the duties expected of you—the Warden of Vigilance—duties you need to fulfill without an end, twenty-four hours a day, granting neither pause nor rest.”
Morvain spoke with a heavy look on her face and Kael…
“I accept.”
Kael nodded with a light bow.
Morvain then glanced at Lavinia and—
“And you will be the Seventh Vein.”
“The Seventh Vein?”
Lavinia frowned, and Morvain nodded,
“I have been thinking about it for days now. I have had a few of my subordinates attend your lectures, and to this day, I cannot forget the looks on their faces as they described the ’new world’ you opened for them.
I realized your value today but hesitated because of… foolish reasons.”
The Matriarch muttered, and the Elders sighed too. They all knew what those ’foolish’ reasons were. Soon, however, Morvain shook her head and—
“But now that ’that’ problem is solved, I can make it official and move things forward.”
Morvain straightened her back as she looked into Lavinia’s eyes,
“Lavinia Dragonborn, from this day forth, you will lead the Seventh Vein of the Heights, Magic Advancements.
You will be responsible for rebuilding the Velmourn Magical System. You will be modernizing it to rival the world, you will introduce current-era advancements.
You will also be training the new generation of mages. You will create a structured apprenticeship system for Velmourn youth, foster talented children, and develop them further.
You will also be responsible for protecting the Velmourn Lands through Magic. You will reinforce the Wall with modern runes, magical traps, and arrays. You will coordinate with the Watch and Forge to develop enchanted weaponry and armor.
Last but not least, you will serve as Magical Advisor to the Iron Council. You will attend all Council sessions as the Seventh Vein to offer insight on magical risks, decisions, or opportunities.
Just like the Warden of Vigilance, you will be expected to give your all for the Velmourns.”
Morvain spoke, and hearing those words—
“As you command, Matriarch.”
Lavinia bowed her head, accepting her new title.
Morvain nodded, satisfied.
Then, she turned towards the rest of the table and—
“Now that this is done, we move to what we gathered here for—
What next?”
The Matriarch questioned.
“We finally have a way to limit the information our enemy has on us. We can even manipulate that information in a way that will benefit us.
What suggestions do you people have?
What do we do?”
“Resources.”
Aelindra was the first to speak.
“We need resources. We can use it to get those.”
Morvain tilted her head, signalling the Warden of Provision to continue,
“If our previous assumptions are correct, then Drakthar should know that we were attacked. Tell them that we have lost a significant amount of resources because of this. They might send more merchants for trade.”
“No.”
Korvath shook his head.
“Drakthar planned all this. They wouldn’t send any merchants, they would want our people to starve. They would want us to get desperate. Only when a few hundred of us die would they actually take action.
And this time, it wouldn’t be the merchants who would come,
It will be him.
And he won’t be trading, at least it won’t be the usual trades.
We all know what he wants.”
The Commander spoke, looking at Kael and Lavinia.
“…”
“…”
The Elders turned silent.
None of them had forgotten the Drakthar Regent.
“Telling them about the Stonefang attack would only be inviting that man to our shore again. I do not think it is the most ideal use of the advantage we have.”
“Then what else can we do?”
Morvain questioned.
The table turned silent—until finally—
“Just tell them the truth.”
Lavinia spoke up.
