Chapter 2047 Enter Poison
Chapter 2047: Chapter 2047 Enter Poison
— Kat —
Kat stepped into the mist and breathed in deeply, best to work out what this shit did sooner rather then later. Kat paid careful attention to her body as the poison went down her throat, settled on her arms and theoretically started to do its dastardly work. There were flickers of… something on the edge of her awareness but as far as Kat could tell the poison simply wasn’t strong enough. Whatever effect it was meant to have, unless it was quite delayed, it didn’t work on her.
Lily was in a similar position, though she was far less willing to test it then Kat. Lily had managed to make up a small shadowy mask for her Memphis form. It wasn’t perfect, it didn’t really keep the poison out and she didn’t know if it was touch based or meant to be inhaled but the mask helped keep her breathing calm. Lily was planning to fly directly up if things got too much. Which did bring up a question. [Why are we going through the poison instead of just flying over it?]
*It reaches the top of the dome after the midpoint so we’d need to deal with the poison eventually. Plus, it seems to be thicker around the edges. I can see through it better while inside it. Not well, sure, but better. There’s also the fact that we don’t really know where Appoline is hiding out. I’m hoping to be able to find some clues inside but that’s a hope not a tactical reason.*
[You just thought it looked cool, didn’t you?]
*No! While I would totally do that if it was just me, the fact that you’re coming along means that I wasn’t going to do anything potentially dangerous just to look cool. I saw basically nothing when flying towards the poison and I doubt that’s changed. At least in here we can see some distant houses and stuff. Though maybe we should be running?*
[Hmm… the extra movement might theoretically mean breathing heavier but with the band on you can’t run THAT fast anyway. So yeah probably best we pick up the pace. Not too much though. We saw some monsters peaking up out of the poison for a bit and I’d hate to run straight into one of those.]
Kat started to jog at that, ready to look out for anything as the ran through the streets only to realise Lily’s warning was more apt then either of them new. Just as they past by one of the houses, it exploded, shrapnel going everywhere as a pink slime monster roared out of it, trying to tackle Kat immediately.
Clicking her tongue, Kat decided this was no time to waste on anything fancy. Not when it was a slime that could avoid damage if it wanted to. Demonic fire spewed forth from her hands and tried to freeze the thing solid. Recognising the issue, the slime threw up a wall made of slime to eat the impact. Kat let her fire burn until the wall was frozen, smashing through it to get to the slime on the other side…
It was gone. Kat stood in the destroyed street dumbfounded. Debris littered the road and frozen slime chunks were mix in liberally. She’d been ready to end a threat in an efficient and permanent manner… and it had simply ran away. *Do… do I just keep going? I don’t like the idea of leaving something so smart just wondering around. It was a big slime too. Even that wall wouldn’t have taken too much of its mass.*
[What else can we do? It’s a slime. It can probably hide nearly as well as us. It’d take way too long to find it. Especially with the poison mist around making it hard to see properly. If it’s smart, it will either keep moving whenever we get close to a hiding spot of its to ensure we never see it, or perhaps it’s just run off entirely. We can’t waste time. We can clear them out later.]
*Dammit, you’re probably right. Do you think it can change colour?*
[That… hmm… I’m not sure but that’s not a comforting thought.] Kat grimaced but started running once again. It hurt to leave a problem for someone else to deal with but she had to find Appoline before things got worse. It was possible the mad scientist was making more, deadlier potions right at this moment. Not to mention she might have a good percentage of her already made stock on her, ready to unleash them at some point.
Of course, just because she was willing to let the attack go, didn’t mean the slime was. Kat hadn’t even managed to get a minute of running in when the ground underneath her started to bulge. Kat took to the air right before it exploded, several chunks of debris flew right at her and were batted away to avoid being knocked off course. The slime seemed to have gotten a bit bigger in its short time away.
Grimacing, Kat summoned up more demonic fire and lobbed it at the monster, only for it to fight back by hurling a large chunk of concrete in the way. Kat’s demonic fire greedily froze the concreate block instead of continuing past. Kat grit her teeth, focusing on her flames and swapping strategies.
Kat flung a number of fireballs at the slime while continuing to fly away. In return, the orbs were matched by chunks of concrete and Kat found her control shattered. Even with her focus on the orbs, once they had something to burn completely around them they simply left her control, content to burn whatever had impacted them. *Dammit! Is this why people don’t use demonic fire more often? And how is this bastard such a good counter to me?*
[Eh, I wouldn’t say that. What would happen if you just… dived into it and set the whole thing on fire from the inside?]
*I can see it sort of working. Depending on how big the core is and where it’s hiding the slime might just split off a smaller version of itself with the core to go and hide while I waste time destroying the rest of it. That’s sort of why I’m still running.*
[Oh… yeah ok this might be the worst matchup for you.]
*Yeah, I think Thyme might’ve put a finger or two on the scales here with this one. No sense making it TOO easy I suppose. Considering the poison still doesn’t seem to be affecting us. So yeah, just thinking I should keep running.*
So that’s what Kat did. Without any good ideas to quickly dispatch the slime Kat kept running. The slime was throwing a number of things at her to try and knock Kat from the sky but it was too far away now and dodging them wasn’t much trouble at all. Once she got more firmly outside of its range, the slime vanished into the ground once again. Kat wondered if that meant it was gone for good… but doubted it. She kept flying above the ground hoping it would be harder to track her that way.
Perhaps it was, but she’d neglected to do anything other than fly forward, never once deviating from that path. She’d made no move to try and divert her path and the slime capitalised on that. Exploding out of the ground in front of her. Kat gave Lily a signal, and decided it was time to attack. Lily’s shadows lashed out blocking the various debris as Kat slammed into the slime. It immediately tried to kill her. Its body highly acidic and eating away at her clothes while it tried to shove slime in her eyes and down her throat.
Kat put a stop to that by exploding into a demonic inferno. The closest bits of slime quickly freezing and the fire spread out without stopping. Kat quickly resummoned her clothes and started to smash her way through the frozen slime, not stopping her endless assault of demonic fire even as her reserves dipped lower and lower.
Kat eventually made a path all the way through the slime monster, and breaking out of the back revealed the entire thing was frozen solid. Or at least, a large percentage. Even still, Kat had to wince at the cost. Fifty percent of her reserves gone already. Sure it was refilling fast but this was just one slime monster. A big one for sure, but if she encountered three at a time then that might be a real problem.
Horrifically inefficient. We need a better way to take those things out. I suppose I can take some solace in knowing I don’t need to worry about flushing out my demonic energy but this is still a worry. If Appoline is guarded by multiple of these things I’m not sure how we can take them out.
[You probably didn’t need to use quite that much demonic energy. It’s still burning after all.]
*Yeah but I put a fair bit into those fireballs and they got stopped by a random bit of concrete!*
Lily didn’t know what to say. She didn’t have a great plan either… but that didn’t mean it was time to give up. She could only hope that between the pair of them they come up with something better before the next monster arrived.
