Chapter 36: It Was Me Who Took It
Chapter 36: Chapter 36: It Was Me Who Took It
After a few taps on the screen, an image of an index finger appeared.
Chen Xing pressed her own index finger against it, and the door opened.
Worried about another incident, Song Yiguo had registered Chen Xing’s fingerprint on the computer before he left. That way, even if someone changed the password, she could still enter the building and could also change the password whenever she wanted.
Hao Wenli: "..."
She whirled around and glared at Xiao Li. "How are you so useless? How could she still open this door? Are you sure you’re a computer genius?" she demanded in the tone of a boss.
Xiao Li’s face turned pale.
’I’m only here to cooperate with her, not to be her subordinate.’
"If a master profile was set on the main server, then changing the password is useless!" Of course, Xiao Li had ways to crack the main server.
But that was outside the scope of her assigned mission, and she wasn’t about to waste brainpower on it.
Besides, even if she did tamper with it, the other person could just reboot the system and restore everything. It would be a complete waste of time.
Hao Wenli stomped her foot in anger. "Then what good are you?"
Xiao Li’s face grew even paler. "I was just following orders from above to open the door for you. The rest has nothing to do with me!" If it weren’t for the order to wait here, did she think she would put up with this kind of attitude?
From the very first glance, she had disliked the high-and-mighty Hao Wenli for her arrogance and rudeness.
This made Hao Wenli even angrier.
’Just an underling sent to help me, and she’s got this attitude!’
That’s what she thought, but she didn’t say it out loud.
Living alone in this building was truly terrifying; even having an adversary around for company was better than nothing.
To avoid bickering with her any further, Hao Wenli walked toward the storage room.
Before going to sleep last night, she had hidden a large bag of food there.
When she opened the door, she froze.
The bag was gone from the one-square-meter storage room.
She immediately shouted for Xiao Li. "Xiao Li, did you take my food?"
Xiao Li, looking like she’d just eaten shit, had clearly given up on being civil. "Get lost! Who the fuck would want your stuff?" After her outburst, she angrily shoved the storage room door and walked out of apartment 1902.
She wasn’t going to put up with Hao Wenli’s attitude anymore.
Calling her useless was something she could tolerate out of respect for her superiors, but now she was being accused of stealing?
Her superiors had told her to stay here, true, but they never said it had to be in this specific apartment!
The storage room door slammed right into Hao Wenli’s back, making her groan in pain for a good while before she chased after her. "Where are you going?"
"None of your business!" Xiao Li shook her off and entered the apartment next door, 1903.
The door happened to be wide open, saving her a lot of trouble.
Seeing Xiao Li move in next door, Hao Wenli was no longer panicked. Her haughty tone returned. "Fine, I won’t bother! As if I wanted to!" With that, she SLAMMED her own door shut.
On the top floor, Chen Xing entered her kitchen.
There weren’t many ingredients left, but it was just enough to last her a few days. If she was missing anything, she could just take it out of her ’space’ to supplement.
Soon, four hearty dishes were ready: a portion of braised pork knuckle, dry pot fish, shrimp with glass noodles in a clay pot, and chicken stewed with mushrooms.
Although they were mostly time-consuming dishes, she was fortunately able to cook them all at once.
Add two cold side dishes and a bok choy and pork rib soup, and the perfect dinner was ready.
She was holding a heaping bowl of rice and was just about to press the record button when the doorbell rang.
She didn’t get up. Instead, she peeked her head out toward the living room and saw Hao Wenli’s face on the monitor.
Hao Wenli was standing in the first-floor lobby, her face flushed with simmering anger.
Seeing no response and growing impatient, she started her interrogation. "Chen Xing, was it you who took my food? I know it was you! There are only the two of us in this entire building, so who else could it be? You deliberately changed the password to lock me out so you could steal my things while I was trying to find a way in, right? This is robbery! What’s the difference between you and a bandit? Chen Xing... open the door! Give me back my stuff..."
’She caught on quick.’
"Yep, it was me," Chen Xing muttered before turning off the audio and starting her meal.
She had indeed taken it, but it was before Hao Wenli had been locked out of the main entrance.
Last night, while Hao Wenli was asleep, she had entered apartment 1902 and taken the entire bag.
’She sleeps like a log, with zero precautions, and then complains about losing things?’
’She’s lucky she’s even still alive.’
’From now on, don’t let me see any more deliveries, or I’ll take them every single time!’
After pressing record on the video, Chen Xing began to focus on her meal.
A little over ten minutes later, the video was sent out.
No editing, no special effects—just eating from start to finish.
The video’s comment section exploded the moment she took a huge bite of pork knuckle, the mix of fat and lean meat melting in her mouth and sliding down her throat without much need for chewing.
Comments poured in like a flood, scrolling past one after another.
Without a doubt, they were full of envy and jealousy...
This time, Chen Xing didn’t log off immediately. Instead, she patiently scrolled through them.
She scrolled for about ten minutes. Aside from a small number of malicious comments, most people were focused on the food.
Someone had even specifically @’d her: "Streamer, do you dare tell us what your relationship is with my husband (Yan Junxi)?"
’We have no relationship at all!’
Chen Xing felt a headache coming on. She couldn’t believe the incident with Yan Junxi leaving a comment on her video yesterday still wasn’t over.
’That Yan Junxi guy did this on purpose, didn’t he?’
’He knows he’s a magnet for trouble, yet he still left a comment on my video. What a pain!’
Normally, she didn’t care what others said about her—otherwise, she wouldn’t have killed someone in front of so many people.
But with Yan Junxi stirring the pot, she was suddenly getting a lot of attention.
"Since you’re not saying anything, can I assume something’s going on between you and my ’husband’?"
This comment appeared right after, and its upvotes were noticeably high.
"I’m so heartbroken. My husband has you now!"
Chen Xing: "..." She finally understood why some celebrities chose to commit suicide.
’They’re driven to it by pure frustration!’
’Damn it, these unreliable keyboard warriors just say whatever they think, without any regard for the truth.’
At this point, even if she explained, people probably wouldn’t believe her.
Just then, Yan Junxi suddenly posted again: "Safely back in the Capital City. I’m deeply grateful to the young lady for saving my life. I don’t know if we’ll have a chance to meet again, but I wish her all the best and hope she stays safe."
’Now *that* sounds like something a decent person would say.’
Chen Xing continued to lurk and read the comments.
As soon as this message appeared, it had an effect. Everyone instantly swarmed over to Yan Junxi’s comment.
They were worried about his health, worried about what he’d been through these past few days, worried he wasn’t eating or sleeping well...
Just as Chen Xing thought the matter was over, an account with a black profile picture caught her eye. The comment read: "Where does this young lady live?"
Chen Xing furrowed her brow slightly and clicked on the profile picture.
Although the photo at the top of the page wasn’t large, she could still tell that this was the leader of the motorcycle gang that had tried to kill Song Yiguo.
’He clearly already knows I’m the one who took their things and saved Song Yiguo and the others. He’s looking for revenge, isn’t he?’
Chen Xing wanted to delete his comment, but to her shock, someone below had already posted her detailed address, right down to the fact that she was on the top floor.
