Chapter 26: Superstar
Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Superstar
After racing out of the farmers’ market, Chen Xing made several turns and ducked into a small alley. Seeing that no one was following, she stored her vehicle and hid inside a large building.
Her movements were so fast and fluid that even the leader following close behind didn’t spot her.
The convoy soon passed the building where Chen Xing was hiding and continued the chase.
To avoid them, Chen Xing hid inside for quite a while.
Just then, a pungent smell wafted from deeper inside.
This wasn’t the stench of rot, but the fragrant, irresistible aroma of durian.
It turned out there was another door at the back of the room. Passing through it, she found herself in a large fruit market.
The air inside was hot and stuffy, and the smell of durian was overpowering.
All sorts of fruits were perfectly ripe; if left any longer, they would likely start to rot.
How could Chen Xing bear to let food go to waste?
As she collected them into her space, she also noticed the shop next door.
It was filled with various electronics, including a good number of surveillance systems.
These were things she desperately needed.
’If I set up a surveillance alarm system around me when I sleep, I’ll have an extra layer of security.’
She took them all!
The entire systems, along with their instruction manuals.
As she left the shop, she heard the sound of machinery whirring, coming from underground.
If she wasn’t mistaken, it was the sound of a generator.
’My space has almost everything now. If I can add a power source, my life will be perfect.’
’Of course, finding solar panels would be best, but a generator will do just fine until then.’
She had plenty of time anyway, so she headed underground to investigate.
The lack of any other movement amidst the noise proved there were no zombies below.
She reached the basement without any trouble.
A massive generator—exactly what she wanted.
As she cut the power, the surroundings were plunged into complete darkness.
But Chen Xing wasn’t afraid of the dark. After storing the generator, she went back up to the first floor and continued her search deeper inside.
The items inside weren’t all necessities, but it was still a decent haul.
Guessing that the group had gone far by now, Chen Xing peeked out of an upstairs window. To her surprise, there were still figures at the street corner—the same people in leather gear.
’They must not be willing to give up. They’re still searching the area.’
’This way is no good. I’ll find another exit!’
Chen Xing moved to the back of the building, but there were people there, too.
’Whatever. I’ve got time. I can wait them out.’
About ten minutes later, when Chen Xing looked outside again, the group was suddenly leaving in a hurry.
Although she was puzzled, she didn’t linger once she saw the convoy was truly gone.
She still had over an hour before the agreed-upon meeting time, but just in case, she headed back immediately.
When she was still a few hundred meters from the high-rise where Song Yiguo was hiding, Chen Xing sensed something was wrong and quickly ducked behind cover.
In the wide intersection ahead, countless zombies were roaring.
A horde this large couldn’t have been drawn by just one or two people.
Chen Xing ran into a tall building nearby, climbed several floors, and went to a window.
She saw that the intersection was blocked off by a three-to-four-meter-high barrier, and the surrounding zombies were desperately trying to crash through it.
And in the center of the barricade was a group of people in leather—the same crew from the farmers’ market.
’So... they rushed off just to come here?’
She looked again. The crowd was especially dense around the building where Song Yiguo and the others were hiding. It wasn’t hard to guess who their target was.
Chen Xing’s first thought was an assessment: Were Song Yiguo and the others worth her time to save?
The answer was obvious. Song Yiguo’s identity made it worthwhile.
With the decision made, she no longer hesitated.
She checked her space. She opened the green metal cases she had taken from the military vehicle: three contained special ammunition for assault rifles, two held offensive grenades, and one held Defensive grenades.
Perfect. They would come in handy right now.
By the time she emerged from her space, several people were dragging the injured Song Yiguo and a worried-looking Yan Junxi out of the building.
Even from a distance, Chen Xing could see that Song Yiguo’s complexion had improved a lot. The ordeal hadn’t caused him any major issues.
"Boss, look who we found!" a short, monkey-faced man said, pointing obsequiously at Yan Junxi for his leader.
The leader’s gaze immediately fell on Yan Junxi’s face.
Though Yan Junxi’s face was dark and dirty, it did nothing to diminish his features. Even in a crowd, he was still the most eye-catching person there.
"The superstar, Yan Junxi?" The leader’s voice shot up an octave.
When the people around them heard it was Yan Junxi, they all turned to stare at him.
"It really is Yan Junxi..." The crowd erupted. Everyone pushed forward, trying to get a glimpse of the nation’s boyfriend’s unparalleled looks. "Oh my god, he’s even more handsome than on TV..." ’With looks like that, no wonder he appeals to everyone.’
Even the leader instantly turned into a fangirl. "Yan the Superstar, can you give me an autograph?" he asked, his eyes glinting suggestively as he stepped forward and brushed his shoulder against Yan Junxi’s.
Chen Xing was speechless. ’Is he really that famous?’
Averse to being touched, Yan Junxi took a step back, a look of clear disgust on his face.
Seeing the leader trying to make a move on Yan Junxi, Song Yiguo’s heroic brow furrowed with anger. "Get away from him!"
Even though Song Yiguo was being held up, it did nothing to diminish his natural, commanding presence.
It was a different kind of aura than the leader’s; it was innate.
The leader’s gaze shifted, intending to intimidate the other man, but he found himself outmatched in a single glance.
’I’m the boss of several hundred men! How can I lose a battle of presence to some injured pretty boy?’
"Who the hell do you think you are, meddling in my business?" His attention was now fixed on Song Yiguo.
Despite being completely at their mercy, Song Yiguo showed no fear. "Touch him again, and I’ll make you spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair." His tone was deceptively calm but left no room for doubt.
The leader was instantly furious.
’What the hell is this situation? How dare he make such arrogant threats?’
’And in front of all my men?’
He spun around, grabbed an assault rifle from one of his underlings, and snarled, "You think I won’t blow your brains out?"
But before the gun could reach Song Yiguo, Yan Junxi stepped in front of him. "He’s Song Yiguo... Do you have any idea what the consequences are for hurting him?"
The leader froze. ’Song Yiguo... there’s probably not a single person in the whole country who doesn’t know that name.’
His arrogant expression grew uglier and uglier until his face was completely dark.
If the man before him really was Song Yiguo, then even in the apocalypse, he was someone the leader couldn’t afford to offend.
"Just because you say he’s Song Yiguo, that makes him Song Yiguo?" he said, stubbornly refusing to believe it.
"It really is Song Yiguo..." An underling next to him holding a phone immediately handed it to the boss.
The leader, a man standing one-point-nine meters tall, suddenly felt very small after seeing the photo on the phone.
He deeply regretted threatening him with a gun, but it was too late for regrets.
So he could only redirect his anger onto the underlings who had dragged the two men out, kicking them furiously to vent his frustration.
Just then, an underling standing behind him pulled his boss aside. "Boss, you’ve already offended him. If you let him go now, he’ll definitely come after you later. I say we just get rid of him, quietly and without a trace!"
