Chapter 87: Chapter 87 Interview with Luna I
Placing the food on the table, Kai walked around to the other side with Ethan beside him. Both of them watched the young man sitting there as if he were one second away from disappearing into a hole in the ground if one suddenly opened beneath him.
"I brought freshly baked bread and warm soup to eat with it. It should be good," Kai said, dropping the bottle of water beside the plate before pulling out a chair.
Astrid stared at the food. His stomach practically screamed at him to eat, but his hands were still trembling badly. He kept staring at the bread and soup, contemplating whether he should actually trust them enough to take a bite.
Ethan noticed the shaking. "Maybe I should heal him first. He looks like he’s about to collapse just from how badly he’s trembling."
Kai nodded. "Yeah, do that." He took a seat and leaned back, watching Ethan prepare himself.
Ethan approached Astrid and crouched slightly. "So, Astrid, I’m going to heal you, but I’m not going to lie and say it won’t hurt."
Astrid immediately looked at him.
Ethan continued, "It’s going to hurt like a bitch, so be a man and hold still."
Astrid’s expression became even more nervous—that was supposed to be comforting? He looked down at his feet, then back at Ethan. "I don’t think that was supposed to make me feel better."
"It wasn’t," Kai said casually.
Astrid looked at him.
Kai shrugged. "That look on Ethan’s face already tells me you’re going to have a rough time. Just don’t scream too loudly. That’s the most important thing right now."
Astrid stared at both of them. "So basically, I’m supposed to suffer quietly?"
"Exactly."
"That’s horrible."
Kai grinned. "Welcome to the apocalypse."
Ethan placed his hands over Astrid’s injured feet. A faint golden glow immediately appeared around his palms. Astrid’s body stiffened. Then the healing began. The torn flesh around his feet started moving unnaturally—the damaged tissue slowly pulled itself together, but the process was far from gentle. New flesh formed beneath the ruined skin, forcing the damaged portions to separate.
Astrid’s face twisted. "Ah—!"
Kai immediately reached forward. "Don’t scream!"
"I’M TRYING!" Astrid’s voice came out strangled as he gripped the edge of the table. The pain was unbearable—it felt as though his feet were being torn apart and rebuilt at the same time.
Meanwhile, Adrian and Rowan had been left with most of the cleaning. They had been working for several minutes when the sound of Astrid’s struggle reached them. Both men stopped.
Adrian looked toward the dining area. "Is this some kind of secret organization or what? Why are we the only ones still cleaning while everyone else keeps disappearing?"
Rowan wiped his forehead and frowned. "We should just finish this quickly and deal with the others who still need attention." They started walking toward the dining area, but Rowan’s voice immediately drew Ethan’s attention.
"Is there something wrong with your volume?" Ethan snapped. "Rowan, can you please carry that thunderous voice somewhere else? Can’t you see I’m trying to heal someone?"
Rowan stopped. "Do you want him to die? Because if something happens to him, I’m certain Luna isn’t going to be happy about it."
The remark clearly irritated Rowan—he fell silent, turned around, and walked away with a displeased frown.
Ethan shook his head and returned his attention to Astrid. He had barely continued for a few seconds when Rowan’s voice came again. "Where did you keep the brush I gave you earlier?"
Ethan’s eye twitched.
Kai stood up. "Can you stop this? You’re being childish. He’s trying to concentrate. At least give us some privacy. The brush isn’t going anywhere. You can come back for it when he’s done."
Rowan scoffed. "Privacy?"
Kai’s expression hardened slightly. "What is wrong with you?"
Ethan glanced between them. "Rowan, I don’t understand what’s gotten into you. Adrian, I thought we all agreed to let Astrid stay."
Rowan immediately shook his head. "Maybe you all agreed without me because I didn’t agree to shit."
The room went silent. Rowan’s gaze shifted toward Astrid. "That guy nearly killed me."
Astrid opened his eyes slightly.
"And look at him. What if he’s some kind of spy? He worked with the government. He was one of their awakened. Do you honestly think bringing someone like that into our circle is smart?" Rowan’s voice was low now. "I thought I had no problem with him, but he’s suspicious."
Kai stared at him. "How would you know he’s suspicious? You haven’t even heard him properly explain himself." He crossed his arms. "Is there something else bothering you?"
Rowan gave a humorless laugh. "So now you’re the boss?"
Kai frowned. "And now you’re displaying authority?"
Rowan stepped closer. "Why don’t you go back to being the dumb rock you are?" He turned and walked away before Kai could respond.
Kai remained standing there, staring at his back. For several seconds, he didn’t say anything. Where had that come from? This was obviously about more than Astrid—something had happened to Rowan, and Kai couldn’t figure out what it was.
Ethan glanced at him. "Sorry, man. He didn’t mean it."
Kai finally looked away. "He meant every word." His voice was quieter. "Don’t worry about it."
Ethan studied him but didn’t say anything. Kai wasn’t stupid—he knew exactly how the others saw him. The dumb one. The childish one. The guy who joked around whenever things became too serious. But that wasn’t his entire personality. It was something he had built over the years. When he was younger, acting stupid had been easier than admitting he was lonely. Making people laugh had been easier than explaining the grief he carried. Pretending nothing bothered him had been easier than allowing anyone to see how badly certain things hurt. It had become his armor, and now everyone had gotten so used to seeing that version of him that they had forgotten there was an actual person underneath it.
Kai sighed. "He meant every word he said. It’s fine." He returned to his seat. "Just carry on, and keep your voice down. We don’t want to wake Luna."
Astrid watched him for a moment but didn’t say anything. Then he closed his eyes as Ethan continued the healing. His feet suddenly twitched as the damaged tissue began shifting beneath Ethan’s golden glow. Astrid’s entire body tensed.
Then—"AHHH!"
Kai shot forward. "Don’t scream!"
"I CAN’T HELP IT!"
The damaged flesh peeled away, and fresh tissue began forming underneath it. The process looked disgusting, but the wounds were closing rapidly. Just as Ethan was about to finish, the door leading to Luna’s private room creaked open.
Everyone froze.
Kai slowly turned his head. A pair of feet appeared first, then Luna stepped out. She looked exhausted, her raven hair slightly disheveled from sleep, and in her arms was a massive teddy bear that she was squeezing tightly against her chest.
Kai stared. "What the hell?"
Luna looked at them. "Can’t someone have a rest around here anymore?" She pouted.
Kai’s eyes moved toward the teddy bear. "How the fuck did she even get that teddy bear?"
Before he could finish, Ethan straightened. "Done." He removed his hands from Astrid’s feet. "Completely healed. He should be back to normal in a few minutes. We just need to give his body some time to adjust." Ethan casually reached for the bottle of water Kai had brought and took a drink.
Astrid stared down at his feet—the wounds were gone. Completely. He flexed his toes and felt nothing—not even pain. His eyes widened. "You’re... really a healer."
Ethan shrugged. "That’s generally how healing works."
Luna walked closer. Kai turned toward her. "You’re not going back to sleep?"
Luna groaned. "Unfortunately, no." She dropped the teddy bear onto the nearest couch before stretching her arms. "I really need something that can help with sleep these days. No matter how tired I am, I can’t seem to fall into a proper deep sleep." Her eyes narrowed. "And didn’t I hear people arguing?"
Kai immediately flashed an innocent smile. "No."
Luna stared at him.
Kai maintained the smile. "Definitely not."
Her lips curled. "Every time you make that weird facial expression, you’re lying."
Kai’s smile disappeared. "I’m not—"
"Stop with the horrendous act." Luna turned toward Astrid. "So, Astrid." He immediately straightened. "Now that you’re healed, I think we should sit down and have a proper conversation." She pulled out a chair and sat down across from him, crossing her arms. "At least let me know who exactly I’m allowing into my home."
Astrid swallowed.
"And I’d also like to know about your powers." Her eyes gleamed with genuine interest. "I won’t lie. They’re intriguing."
Astrid stared at her. There was something about Luna that made him uncomfortable—not because she was threatening, but because she seemed far too calm for someone who had just watched an entire group of government soldiers die outside her house. Yet here she was, sitting comfortably with a giant teddy bear nearby, acting as though everything was normal.
Kai suddenly raised his hand. "Hey, that’s unfair."
Luna glanced at him. "You never praised my powers."
The room went silent for a second. Luna grabbed the teddy bear and threw it directly at him.
Kai ducked—the teddy bear flew over his head and landed on the couch. "Would you let me have this conversation?"
Kai rubbed his head. "I’m just saying—"
"And don’t give me that jealous look."
"I’m not jealous."
"You are."
"I’m not!"
Luna ignored him completely. "Astrid, let’s get to work."
