Chapter 80: Chapter 80 Death game Iv
Melanie screamed as Astrid disappeared, leaving her alone with the towering abomination. "Come back here, you fucker!" she cried after him. "Isaac won’t forgive you if you get me killed!" Her voice cracked as she struggled to move. "I won’t disturb you again, Astrid. I’m sorry for being an ass. I don’t want to die. I’m afraid!" The apology came out desperately, but Astrid was already too far away to hear her properly.
Melanie’s entire body trembled. The creature was now only a breath away from her. Its enormous head lowered until its horrifying face was directly above hers. Thick saliva dripped from its mouth and landed on her skin, making her flinch. Yet it didn’t attack. Instead, the creature seemed to be sniffing her. Melanie froze. She didn’t dare move. Her heart hammered violently against her chest as the monster dragged its nose across the air around her, seemingly trying to determine whether she was worth eating.
Then its attention shifted. Astrid. He had deliberately moved away to draw the creatures’ attention and find a way to reach Isaac. The monster turned its head toward him. Melanie saw her chance. She forced herself to stand. It was one of the worst decisions she could have made. Her skin had become stuck to the scorching surface beneath her. The moment she pulled herself upward, the blistered flesh that had been pressed against the floor tore away. A huge patch of skin ripped from her body.
"FUCK!" "ARRRRRGHHHHHH!" Her scream was deafening.
Isaac heard it from across the cliff. His face immediately changed. "Melanie!" He shouted as loudly as he could. "Melanie, are you okay? What’s happening? Talk to me, baby!" There was no answer. Only her agonized screams echoed across the area. "Melanie!" Isaac struggled to climb higher, his heart pounding.
Then something dropped beside him. The hose. He looked up. Astrid was standing above him. Isaac’s expression immediately hardened. "Why aren’t you with her?" Astrid stared at him. "What?" "If anything happens to her, I’ll never forgive you." Isaac’s voice was filled with anger. "You’re dead to me."
The words struck Astrid harder than he expected. He simply stared at Isaac. "Why are you still standing there?" Isaac demanded. "Go back there and see what’s happening to her!" Astrid’s jaw tightened. "You’re a man. Act like one and fucking help her. That’s why you’re here!" Each word felt like another slap.
Astrid looked at the hose between them, then at Isaac. "That’s unreasonable," he said, his voice trembling with anger. "You want me to risk my life for her?" Isaac didn’t hesitate. "Yes." Astrid’s eyes widened. "As my friend, that’s your duty. Nothing more."
That was the final straw. Something inside Astrid snapped. He had spent years putting up with this. Always being the third person. Always being expected to sacrifice himself whenever Isaac or Melanie needed something. And somehow, his own life never seemed to matter. He opened his mouth to respond. Then he looked up. His expression changed. One of the monstrous creatures that couldn’t fit through the narrow passage had taken to the sky. It was flying directly toward him.
Astrid immediately turned. "I guess you don’t care about yourself either." He looked back at Isaac. "Fine." His eyes hardened. "I’ll save myself since you and Melanie don’t want my help."
The creature swooped down. Astrid performed a quick backflip. The monster missed him completely and crashed into the pillar behind him. BOOM! The impact shattered the structure. Pieces of stone flew everywhere. The creature screeched as it struggled beneath the debris, its wounded body thrashing violently. Astrid didn’t wait to see what happened. He ran.
Isaac’s eyes widened. He watched Astrid disappear. Then he looked back at the monster. The creature slowly lifted its head from the rubble. Its eyes locked onto Isaac. His blood ran cold. Astrid was gone. Melanie was somewhere else. And now he was alone.
The creature growled. Isaac instinctively stepped backward. "No..." The beast pushed itself out of the broken pillars. Stone rolled off its enormous body as it rose. Its claws scraped against the ground. Isaac’s palms immediately covered his mouth. He hoped somehow that hiding would make him invisible. It didn’t. The creature saw him. Its tongue slipped between its teeth as it slowly licked its lips.
"Oh, fuck." Fear consumed him. Isaac looked around frantically. There had to be something. A weapon. A place to hide. Anything. But he was trapped at the edge of the cliff. If he moved too far backward, there was nothing beneath him. One wrong step and he would fall to his death.
The creature took another step. The ground shook. Another. The beast was already crushing whatever stood in its path. Finally, one of its enormous feet landed directly on the edge of the cliff. The entire area trembled. "No, no, no!" Isaac’s voice shook. He took another step backward. "Don’t!" The creature growled. Isaac’s breathing became frantic. "Astrid!" He screamed. "Astrid, please!" There was no answer. "I’m sorry!" His voice broke. "Please come back! Astrid!"
He desperately expected the same Astrid he had known for years to appear. The naive friend who always came back. The friend who never stayed angry for long. Whenever they argued, Astrid would eventually return. They would talk. Sometimes they would hug. Then everything would go back to normal. Isaac had always believed that would happen no matter what. But this time was different.
"Astrid!" He screamed again. "I’m sorry! Please help me!" Nothing. The creature moved closer. Isaac’s legs trembled. He realized something horrible. Astrid wasn’t coming back. Not this time.
Meanwhile, Melanie was facing an even worse fate. She had managed to drag herself away from the burning area, but her movement only enraged the creature. It suddenly lunged. Melanie barely had time to scream. The beast’s massive jaws opened and closed around her upper body. CRUNCH! Blood splattered across the heated ground. Melanie’s scream became muffled beneath the creature’s jaws as its teeth crushed through flesh and bone. The sound was horrifying. A mixture of cracking bones, tearing flesh, and her desperate screams echoed through the area. Anyone who heard it would have been traumatized.
Astrid didn’t. He had already moved too far away. But even though he had told himself he wouldn’t return, something inside him refused to let him abandon them completely. He knew them. Years of friendship couldn’t simply disappear because of one argument. They were his friends. His companions. Isaac, especially, had once been his refuge. No matter how angry he was, Astrid couldn’t completely turn his back on them. He stopped running. His fists tightened. "Damn it." He turned around. "I’m not leaving them like this."
A monstrous entity suddenly came rushing after him. This one wasn’t flying. It was running. And it was fast. Astrid’s eyes widened. "You’re kidding me!" He immediately took off again. The creature thundered behind him, its massive footsteps shaking the ground. Astrid’s eyes darted around. He needed somewhere to go. Somewhere safe. But the entire area had become a death trap. There was nowhere to hide.
He spotted a section of red tiles ahead and sprinted toward it. The moment his foot landed on the tiles—CRACK! The ground gave way. Astrid’s eyes widened. "Shit!" The entire section collapsed beneath him, revealing a gigantic hole filled with nothing but darkness. He fell. But his hand shot out instinctively. His fingers caught the hose that was still wrapped around the nearby pillar. His entire body swung downward. "AHHHHH!" Astrid dangled over the abyss. The hose strained beneath his weight. He looked down. There was no visible bottom. Only darkness. His heart nearly stopped. "Don’t you dare break."
The creature reached the edge. Its head lowered. Astrid looked up and saw its mouth opening. The beast stretched its neck toward him, trying to bite him while he hung helplessly. "Get away from me!" Astrid swung his body. The creature snapped its jaws shut just inches from his leg. "Fuck!" He swung again. Then his eyes caught something beneath him. A small metallic box. It was embedded in the wall beneath the collapsed section. It looked almost like a control panel. A switch.
Astrid stared. "What is that?" He squinted. The box had several buttons and a glowing indicator. His mind immediately began racing. Could it be part of the mansion’s security system? Could it control the traps? If he could reach it, maybe—"Maybe I can turn all of this off." His eyes widened with hope. If the traps stopped, he could escape. Maybe the creatures would lose their advantage. Maybe he could even get back to Isaac and Melanie.
But there was one problem. The control box was directly beneath the edge of the hole. He had to get there. And he had no idea what would happen if he touched the wrong thing. Astrid swallowed. "I can do this." His grip tightened around the hose. "I won’t die." He looked toward the darkness beneath him. "I don’t want to perish yet."
Suddenly, the creature changed its behavior. Instead of trying to bite him, it turned toward the pillar.
Astrid’s eyes widened. "No..." It understood. The beast had realized what was keeping him alive. The hose. The creature slammed its massive body against the pillar. BOOM! The structure shook. Astrid nearly lost his grip. "Stop!" The monster struck again. BOOM! The pillar cracked. The hose shifted. Astrid screamed. "NO!" He swung violently through the air. The hose slipped another few inches. He could feel his fingers burning from the pressure. "Hold!" He wrapped one arm around the hose while reaching with the other.
The creature attacked again. The pillar cracked even deeper. Astrid knew he didn’t have much time. If that pillar collapsed completely, the hose would fall. And so would he. He gritted his teeth. "Come on..." He began pulling himself toward the other side of the hole. His muscles screamed. His palms were tearing apart. But he continued. The control box was getting closer. One hand at a time. One desperate movement after another.
