Chapter 75 House defense II
Chapter 75: Chapter 75 House defense II
Entering the panic room, Kai’s eyes immediately widened at the sight of the structures around him. This wasn’t an ordinary safe room. Gadgets and computers were mounted across almost every corner, all of them connected to the exterior defenses of the house. Dozens of cameras covered nearly every angle of the property, allowing them to see everything happening outside through the massive screens built into the walls.
Kai stared at the screens, his expression slowly changing as he watched the terrifying creatures tearing through the military forces outside, tossing helicopters around as if they were toys and ripping awakened soldiers apart like pieces of meat. It was ghastly. And just when Kai thought it couldn’t get any worse, one of the creatures suddenly turned toward a helicopter that had been dragged from the sky. Unlike the others, it hadn’t exploded yet. The creature moved closer, and Kai got his first clear look at its face. His expression immediately turned to dread.
Ethan, who was also watching the collection of monitors, tightened his hands behind his back. "Fuck this," he muttered, staring at the creature. "Why did we leave her out there? That wasn’t right." The camera zoomed in as the creature moved, revealing its face—that of a massive reptile with a deadly curved beak extending from its mouth. Its body was covered in thick scales, while its tail curved upward like that of a scorpion, ending in two enormous pincers. Its legs were thick enough to shake the ground with every step. It was a terrifying sight.
Ethan swallowed hard. "I’m going out there." Everyone turned toward him. "I’m bringing Luna back. There’s no way we’re sitting here while she’s out there alone." He moved toward the entrance, but Rowan immediately grabbed his arm.
"You’re not going anywhere," Rowan said firmly. Ethan looked back, demanding that he let go. "You’re going to get yourself killed," Rowan continued, tightening his grip. "Remember that she has gadgets and traps installed all over this place. If you go outside now, you’re not helping her. You’ll just become another person she has to worry about."
Ethan’s jaw tightened. "She’s still out there."
"And she’s probably more prepared than any of us," Rowan’s voice became sharper. "So stop being a pussy and stay here." Ethan winced—those words clearly struck a nerve. Rowan was angry, perhaps because Ethan had suddenly become so concerned about Luna after everything they had witnessed. "I don’t know why you suddenly care so much about Luna," Rowan continued, "but keep your mouth shut and look after yourself." He pointed toward the monitors. "Luna is coming back." His eyes narrowed. "And honestly, I think the monsters are the ones who should be worried."
Kai glanced at him. "Why?"
"Because they just entered territory they don’t understand." Kai nodded slowly. That made sense. Ethan, however, still wasn’t convinced, but he didn’t argue anymore. As long as he stayed inside the panic room, at least he couldn’t do something stupid and get himself killed. But then he looked back at the monitors. "The monsters aren’t the only ones in trouble," he said, his expression becoming grim. "All those military personnel and awakened soldiers are going to die too, aren’t they?"
Nobody answered. They didn’t need to. Everyone already knew the answer. Luna might have been ruthless, but she had activated the defenses of her home for a reason. Anyone who entered without her permission was likely to be treated as an enemy.
Their attention returned to the screens. One of the helicopters was still in the air, damaged badly, wobbling from side to side as the pilot struggled to control it. Then the creature attacked. Its enormous pincers tore through the front of the helicopter, and the pilot barely had time to scream before one of the pincers pierced through his face. Blood splattered across the windshield, and the helicopter spiraled downward, finally crashing against the mountain.
Three awakened survivors managed to escape the wreckage—two men and one woman. They stumbled down the mountain, barely able to keep themselves upright. The tallest of the three, a muscular man, suddenly shouted, "Melanie! Behind you!" Melanie turned and found the creature blocking her path. One of its pincers snapped toward her, and she immediately ducked as a stream of disgusting fluid sprayed across the ground where she had been standing.
"That fucking fluid!" Melanie cursed, scrambling away and continuing to run. The three of them had already pushed themselves to their limits, using their abilities throughout the battle in the sky, and they could feel their strength disappearing. If they used too much more energy, they would either collapse or become too weak to defend themselves, and neither option was acceptable.
Melanie continued running until the terrain suddenly changed, and the third survivor stopped. "Wait!" The other two looked back as the purple-haired man pointed toward the ground. "Isn’t this a staircase?" His long purple hair had become completely disheveled, strands of it sticking across his face as the wind whipped around them.
Isaac sighed. "What happened to the staircase?" He glanced at the purple-haired man. "And your hair is moving around like crazy. Can you worry about that later?" The purple-haired man glared at him. "Seriously?" "Yes, seriously." Isaac continued forward. "We need to get out of here before that thing turns us into dinner."
Then a deafening sound came from above, and they all froze. Another helicopter crashed onto the mountain, followed by a scream echoing through the air. Then came the sound of flesh being torn, something gagged, and everything went silent. The three survivors stared at each other, unsure whether the creature had reached the helicopter, but they didn’t want to find out.
"So we’re supposed to go up there?" the purple-haired man shook his head. "We don’t even know what’s waiting for us." He looked toward the mountain. "I said it before. The government is going to abandon us." He swallowed. "They’re not coming back for us."
Melanie didn’t waste time arguing. "Get out of my way." She pushed past them. "I’m not dying here." She ran. A pincer suddenly shot out from behind them, narrowly missing Isaac’s skull. The purple-haired man grabbed him and yanked him aside. "Move!" All three took off, no longer knowing where they were going—they simply knew that staying behind meant death.
They eventually reached a split in the path. One route continued higher up the mountain, while the other led toward an iron structure that looked like some kind of elevator. Melanie stopped. "Wait," she said, pointing upward. "I think there’s a house up there." The other two looked and sure enough, something resembling a building could be seen above them. They exchanged glances and didn’t bother discussing it—there wasn’t time. All three grabbed different sections of the iron structure and began climbing.
"No matter what happens, don’t look down," Isaac said, glancing at the purple-haired man. "And Astrid, I know you’re afraid of heights, so pull yourself together." Astrid forced a smile. "Thanks. Very helpful." He gripped the iron tightly, his palms already hurting, but anything was better than being torn apart by that creature.
The metal rattled beneath them as they climbed, and then a powerful impact shook the structure. BOOM! All three froze as the creature reached the bottom, looking upward at its fleeing prey. Its enormous body moved closer, and then it struck the metal structure with one of its legs. The entire elevator-like frame shook violently.
"Don’t let go!" Isaac’s voice echoed through the metal. "No matter what happens, don’t let go!" Melanie screamed as she tightened her grip. Astrid squeezed his eyes shut as the structure continued trembling. The creature struck it again, and the metal groaned. Astrid’s arms were burning, his fingers beginning to lose their grip. "I’m going to fall!" "Don’t!" Isaac shouted. "Keep climbing!" Astrid forced his eyes open—the top was still far away, but he continued pulling himself upward.
Inside the panic room, the others watched the scene through the monitors. Kai shook his head. "They’re definitely dead." Ethan looked at him, and Kai pointed toward the screen. "And even if they somehow make it to the top, they’ll either be killed by the traps or by Luna." Rowan watched the three survivors struggling. "Poor people," he said, his expression darkening. "They trusted the government to save them, and now they’re going to die because of it."
Kai didn’t answer. He continued watching the screen as something caught his attention. "Wait." The others turned as Kai leaned closer to the monitor. "Look at that creature." Rowan frowned. "What about it?" "It’s wounded." Kai pointed toward its wings. "Look closely." The creature’s wings were damaged badly—one was hanging awkwardly, while the other was torn across several sections. "It can’t fly."
Adrian immediately looked toward another monitor. "Then what about the others?" Kai looked around. "There were four of them," he said, his eyes narrowing. "But I only see one here." He pointed toward the screen. "Where did the others go?"
Adrian switched the camera angle, and another monitor flickered to life. He stared at it, then his expression changed. "Oh damn." Kai turned toward him. "What?" Adrian pointed. "They’re there." Everyone crowded around the screen, which showed another part of the property. Two of the enormous creatures were moving across the ground—one tearing through a destroyed helicopter, the other crawling toward the mountain. Kai’s face paled instantly.
