Chapter 69 The dungeon I

Chapter 69: Chapter 69 The dungeon I

Kai watched Luna fall with shock written all over his face.

The fact that it was because of a frog was almost laughable. Here she was, a woman who had battled dangerous creatures without flinching, who had stared down cannibals and survived horrors beyond imagination. And yet a plate of dead amphibians had sent her sprawling across Adrain like a startled cat.

He couldn’t help it—a small laugh escaped his lips.

But then something strange happened.

A system chim appeared right at Luna’s head. It was translucent, hovering in the air like a holographic projection, its surface flickering with blue light.

[Fear detected from the host mind. Laser activated.]

Luna, who was still sprawled across Adrain’s body, felt her cheeks burning with either shame or embarrassment—she couldn’t tell which. Her damn system was trying to make it worse. And now that the others could hear it, they all turned to look at her.

"No, damn you computer, it’s not that," Luna snapped, waving her hand dismissively at the chim. "I am okay. Just a minor inconvenience."

[Are you sure? I can sense distress from afar. I was programmed to know that.]

The dumb, nosy system. Couldn’t it see that this was just a minor issue?

[Oh, a frog. My bad. I will be on my way.]

The chim flickered and disappeared.

Luna glared at the empty space where it had been. Then she glared at Miles, who had rushed over to help her stand up. She wasn’t willing to be helped.

"You cooked dead frogs?" she screeched, kicking her legs in the air like a spoilt child. "Why the heck would you cook one? Are you normal?"

Rowan wanted to help the two of them get up, but Adrain held him where he stood with a raised palm.

"Look at me. I’m with Adrain. I don’t need your help," Luna said, giving a clear hint for the man she was laying on to get up and help her.

But the latter didn’t understand. He kept holding his waist, wincing in pain.

"Let Rowan help you," Adrain said through gritted teeth. "I can’t even get my legs working again."

That made Luna frown. She narrowed her eyes to look at him, studying his pained expression.

Before she could say anything, Rowan walked over and lifted her easily off Adrain’s lap in a bridal style. He carried her back to the dining table, his movements smooth and effortless.

Miles rushed to her side, his face full of contrition.

"I’m sorry," he said quickly. "I didn’t know who replaced my food with frogs."

He defended himself, looking around at Ethan and Kai’s faces. He noticed Kai looking at the floor and frowned immediately.

"It’s Kai. He’s the one who did that. I’m sorry."

Luna let out a breath. She despised frogs with everything in her.

"It’s okay," she said, her voice softer now. "But you all should eat your meal. I will be in the sitting room with my novels. After you all are done, I will like to address our upcoming mission."

The mention of another mission made the others tense up immediately.

"One question before you go," Adrain said, still on the floor, stretching himself out. That’s what he got for trying to be a gentleman. "Is it concerning the evacuation?"

"I have said that before," Luna replied, her voice cold. "Anything about evacuation, I have washed my hands from it. Leaving the earth? Why would I follow them when everything I need is here? Other than going, I will make here inhabitable and start a flourishing home. So I am still standing on my words. Go if you want to suffer. But stay here with me, and let’s make ourselves happy in this disaster."

Kai looked at her, turning the pudding he had made with his spoon. The words were hopeful—believing that everything would be alright. But how was she so certain this was the best place to stay?

He looked outside, thinking about the flying abomination that had attacked them at the safe zone. That thing the size of a plane had almost killed them all. They didn’t even know where it had come from. Since they got back here, they hadn’t seen any of them again. The leviathans were still at the sea, but that thing... why was it at the safe zone?

He decided to taste the pudding. He dabbed his lips with just the tip of the spoon.

"Okay," he admitted, flinching. "This is terrible."

He looked around the table.

"Shouldn’t we keep it low-key so that the government won’t see us?" he suggested. "We might be the only living thing around, and we don’t want them to trace us back here."

It made sense. For some reason, Kai always made sense. Luna nodded, but she didn’t say any other words before Rowan dropped her on a couch in the sitting room. The two of them fell into the soft cushion of it.

"For a cold-hearted person I met at the safe zone," Luna said, looking at Rowan, "you’re really caring. I mean, all of a sudden you’re now showering me attention. Should I say I am lucky? Or did something change in you?"

Rowan had been expecting the question. He looked straight ahead, watching the others sitting back at the chairs to eat the food they had cooked. Without any options, they were forced to eat Kai’s pudding, which looked so disgusting as Rowan observed from afar.

"Well, it wasn’t part of the plan, Luna," he said quietly. "I’m cold to others because that’s how I protect myself and my heart from getting hurt."

His words made Luna pause. She had been about to swipe through her phone for her novels, but her fingers froze.

That sounded almost like what she had said when she came back to life the second time. After being hurt, betrayed, and left to die, she had guarded her heart securely from any external forces. Him saying this was like seeing a mirror that reflected some part of herself back at her.

"Are you going to share?" Her voice came out detached and cold as she continued scrolling through her phone, not looking up.

Rowan watched her, a grin spreading across his face.

She might be pretending not to listen, pretending to be cold. But he knew she wasn’t entirely evil. Luna had made sure they were all safe. For whatever purpose she had, she didn’t leave them to suffer. And now it seemed like her view of them was changing. Compared to the way she had been looking at them before, her stares now seemed so delicate. Like she was letting herself be taken care of, bit by bit.

"Not much," Rowan said slowly. "But I think I might be connected to the things happening here."

Luna’s eyes lifted from the phone.

"We all know who created the zombies. Maybe not all, but the two of us and Kai heard it. And we might not know if he is still alive. But aside from that, the creatures—the different monsters that seem to be coming out from unknown places..."

He paused, taking a deep breath.

"I might have opened a dungeon by mistake when I awakened my powers. And it might still be open as we speak."

That made Luna look up fully from the phone.

A dungeon.

A real dungeon?

Was that real?

Then it meant the real mutated beasts hadn’t come yet. Those were from the dungeons that had been left unattended. And without any awakened humans around, it was dangerous.

"I didn’t know it was a dungeon," Rowan continued, his voice growing distant. "It was a mistake. I appeared right in one afterwards."

His words sounded horrifying. Imagine being in a sea of monsters, surrounded by things that wanted to tear you apart.

Luna set her phone down completely.

"I’m all ears," she said. "Want to know how it happened."

Rowan gulped. The flashback took over completely, pulling him back to that moment.
