Chapter 67 The healer in their midst.
Chapter 67: Chapter 67 The healer in their midst.
Adrain’s body twitched as he held the pain inside him, refusing to complain or irritate the person who was trying to ease his condition.
"Sorry. I’m such a pain in the ass."
Luna didn’t respond.
She continued cleaning every corner of the wound, carefully wiping away the blood and pressing the flesh around the injury to slow the bleeding. Once she was satisfied, she dipped the bloodied cloth back into the bowl.
"Adrain, I didn’t get to say this before."
Her voice suddenly became quieter.
She looked away, feeling strangely embarrassed.
Back at the sea, everyone had thanked Adrain for what he had done despite the fact that he had been injured himself.
Everyone except her.
Luna knew that without him, things would have ended differently.
His help had been the deciding factor that allowed them to escape from that abomination. If Adrain hadn’t intervened, the monster would have crushed them all along with the vehicle.
She knew that.
She simply hadn’t said it.
Adrain wanted to turn around, but with Luna still pressing against his wound, he couldn’t move properly.
So he only nodded, waiting for her to continue.
Luna was secretly relieved that he couldn’t see her face.
She let out a small breath.
"Just that... out there, you saved us from that monster."
She stopped.
Adrain waited.
He didn’t know what he was expecting from her, but something inside him was suddenly eager to hear the rest.
Luna remained quiet for a few seconds before finally speaking.
"Thanks so much, Adrain. Your sacrifice saved me and the others. I really appreciate it."
Silence.
Adrain’s heart suddenly began thudding against his chest.
Did Luna Hart just thank him?
She fucking thanked him.
The woman who rarely acknowledged anyone’s efforts had actually thanked him.
Did that mean she liked him?
Adrain wasn’t going to go that far.
Not yet.
But damn, he would love it if that were the case.
"Don’t let it get to your head, though, so relax."
Adrain’s jaw dropped.
Way to ruin a perfect moment.
He almost laughed.
Luna, on the other hand, immediately regretted saying anything.
The silence between them suddenly felt awkward.
Maybe she had said it wrong.
Maybe she shouldn’t have said anything at all.
"Dudes... I’m just not used to this."
She muttered under her breath.
Unfortunately, while doing so, her fingers accidentally brushed against the open wound.
Adrain’s entire body jumped.
"Ouch! That hurts."
Luna blinked and immediately focused on him again.
"Sorry."
This time, she actually sounded sincere.
She became more careful afterward, making sure her fingers didn’t touch the deepest part of the injury.
Several minutes later, the wound was finally cleaned.
Luna placed the cloth aside and inspected it one more time.
It was still bad, but at least the bleeding had stopped.
Before she could say anything else, footsteps came from the hallway.
"So, the food is ready. Luna, do you want to have a bite?"
Ethan appeared first.
Almost as if it had been planned, Rowan stepped into the sitting room behind him.
The moment he saw the food being carried toward them, however, Rowan immediately turned around.
Luna caught him.
"Oh, Rowan. There you are."
Rowan stopped.
Luna smiled innocently.
"Why don’t you taste the food for us and tell us what you think?"
Rowan slowly looked at the food.
His expression changed.
Luna wasn’t letting him escape.
"And Ethan, come right here and help Adrain heal."
That wasn’t a request.
It was an order.
Ethan looked at her in confusion.
"Me? Heal? I can’t."
He looked completely clueless.
Luna stared at him.
She wasn’t falling for that innocent expression.
Adorable or not, handsome or dashing, whatever label she wanted to give him, he was going to do what she said.
"Don’t do whatever you’re planning on doing."
Ethan’s expression stiffened.
"I know you have an idea about your powers. You healed yourself, didn’t you?"
Ethan remained silent.
Luna continued.
"You told us that the attackers who went after your sisters stabbed you. So how did you survive?"
She narrowed her eyes.
"And you didn’t exactly look surprised when you were injured. Magic, isn’t it?"
Ethan was taken aback.
Of course, he had mentioned it.
But he hadn’t expected Luna to remember.
At the time, she had acted as though she wasn’t listening.
Hadn’t she even been upstairs when he said it?
So how had she been keeping tabs on him?
"It’s just that I..."
He couldn’t finish.
Luna’s gaze was already fixed on him, as if she were waiting for him to come up with another excuse.
Before Ethan could say anything, Kai walked into the room and stopped dead in his tracks.
"Wait."
His eyes widened.
"Ethan, you can heal?"
Ethan winced.
"You motherfucker! How the hell couldn’t you heal the rest of us?"
Kai’s frustration immediately returned.
During their previous attack, Ethan had stood by instead of helping them.
Now finding out that he had healing abilities only made the whole situation worse.
He could have made a difference.
Maybe they wouldn’t have suffered so badly.
"Sorry."
Ethan sighed.
"I didn’t know any of you. You were strangers, and using my ability takes a lot of energy from me. It weakens me badly."
He glanced at Kai.
"So sacrificing my strength for people I had just met wasn’t exactly something I was willing to do."
Kai’s expression darkened, but he didn’t argue.
Ethan walked toward Adrain.
If he didn’t do it now, Luna would probably remind him that they owed Adrain their lives.
And she wouldn’t be wrong.
Without Adrain’s help, they would have been finished by whatever had been lurking in those depths.
Ethan still remembered the monster grabbing their vehicle.
The memory alone made his body tense.
They had been tossed around inside that vehicle like toys while that horrifying creature tried to drag them into the depths.
It was a moment he never wanted to experience again.
Ethan stopped beside Adrain.
"There’s one warning, though."
He looked at Luna.
"I become extremely weak after using my ability, especially when I’m healing someone else. I noticed it when I used it on my sister."
Luna nodded.
"I know."
Ethan raised an eyebrow.
"You do?"
"No need to explain it to me."
Luna reached into her belongings.
"But you won’t be weak anymore."
She brought out something small.
A crystal.
Ethan’s eyes immediately fixed on it.
"This is for you."
Luna held it out.
It was the final power-leveling crystal.
The same type she had given the others back at the bunker.
This was her last one.
She had been saving it.
Now she was giving it to Ethan.
"This is my gift to you."
Ethan hesitated before taking it.
Luna’s expression became serious.
"But if you betray me—and I’m not talking about just you, I’m talking about all of you—I know how to take my crystal back."
Her eyes hardened.
"And when I do, those sea Leviathans are going to have one hell of a feast."
Her warning was loud and clear.
No one misunderstood it.
Adrain remained seated while the others stood around him, all watching Ethan hold the crystal.
The moment it touched his body, something strange happened.
Unlike the others, the crystal didn’t simply activate around him.
It passed directly through his chest.
Ethan’s eyes widened.
Then he screamed.
"AAAAAAAH!"
His body was thrown to the floor.
He began writhing violently, his hands gripping the ground as the power tore through his body.
Everyone stared.
They had already experienced the same torture.
So they knew exactly what he was going through.
Rowan’s expression suddenly changed.
Something seemed to cross his mind.
"What about that dude who created that zombie?"
He looked toward Luna.
"I wonder where he is. Can’t he stop this?"
Luna looked at him.
For a moment, she genuinely considered the question.
Then she sighed.
"And what exactly do you expect him to stop?"
Rowan blinked.
Luna continued before he could answer.
"What about that dark sea that’s bringing dangerous monsters like the Leviathans? And all those other creatures swimming around?"
She folded her arms.
"Can we stop that?"
Rowan’s mouth opened.
Luna wasn’t finished.
"What about the flying creatures that attacked us when we were trying to take Ethan with us?"
She pointed toward him.
"Then there’s the mutated creatures in the ruined city. Do you think they’re only there?"
Rowan slowly closed his mouth.
"They’re spreading across Earth."
Luna’s expression became grim.
"And don’t even start talking about the sun’s obliterating light. It suddenly stopped for some reason, and nobody knows why."
She looked around at everyone.
"So tell me, how exactly are we supposed to stop all these crises?"
Rowan immediately shut his mouth.
There was nothing he could say to that.
The room fell quiet.
A few moments later, Ethan’s screaming finally stopped.
He remained on the floor, breathing heavily.
His clothes were soaked with sweat.
Slowly, he pushed himself upright.
His mouth was still slightly open as he tried to catch his breath.
He looked at Luna with disbelief.
"So..."
He swallowed.
"No heads-up?"
Everyone stared at him.
Ethan rubbed his chest.
"That thing hurts like a bitch."
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then Kai grinned.
That irritating smile immediately appeared on his face.
"Welcome to the squad."
Ethan glared at him.
"Fuck you."
