Chapter 65 The Harts
Chapter 65: Chapter 65 The Harts
Meanwhile, inside the main part of the fortress, in a separate apartment reserved for influential families, the Hart family sat together around the dining table, having breakfast while discussing the situation outside.
The atmosphere was strangely peaceful considering the world beyond the fortress had already fallen into chaos.
Madison sat comfortably with a bowl of noodles in front of her, swallowing mouthfuls while speaking without even bothering to slow down.
"Do you think Luna is still alive?"
She paused to swallow before continuing.
"Of course, I want that bitch to die in every way possible, but we can’t be too sure. She could have somehow survived."
Ava immediately scoffed.
"I don’t care. Let’s just say it’s karma. That’s what she gets for refusing to give us our inheritance and throwing us out of a house that was supposed to belong to us."
Her expression darkened at the memory.
"She treated us like trash."
James, who had been sitting across from them, sighed.
"So just like that, our mansion is gone? That’s not fair at all."
Madison rolled her eyes.
"You know that’s not what we should be worrying about."
She placed her spoon down and leaned back.
"It’s because of our family name that we even got the opportunity to stay inside this fortress. If we hadn’t had those connections, we’d probably be dead by now."
Her tone became more serious.
"So this is an opportunity for our family. We should take advantage of it and forget about that useless girl. The dead can’t talk."
The moment the words left her mouth, James’s expression shifted slightly.
The dead couldn’t talk.
At least, that was how things used to be.
These days, the dead had a strange habit of coming back.
Nobody knew what the world was becoming anymore.
"You’re right, brother."
Ava suddenly left her seat after finishing her noodles. Instead of drinking the remaining broth, she picked up the bowl and drank directly from it before walking toward Thomas.
She slipped comfortably into his embrace, resting herself against him as though she belonged there.
"But I’m hearing rumors."
Her eyes narrowed with curiosity.
"Even the government broadcasted something about us going to another planet. Is that true?"
Thomas raised an eyebrow.
"Another planet?"
"Yes."
Ava looked at him eagerly.
"Are we really leaving this place?"
She knew Thomas was now working with the inner circle of the FOG once again. The most influential people had been recruited, and fortunately, Thomas had managed to secure his position among them.
That made Ava believe he would have access to information ordinary survivors didn’t.
Thomas sat comfortably on the wide couch while Ava remained wrapped around him. His hand moved absentmindedly over his beard as he thought about her question.
"I heard the same thing."
He paused.
"But it’s not a rumor, sis."
Ava’s eyes immediately brightened.
"For now, we’re officially among the people being transferred to the new planet."
Her mouth opened in excitement.
"So it’s true?"
"Yes."
Thomas nodded.
"What they did with the public broadcast was simply raise false hope. They don’t intend to bring everyone."
His expression hardened.
"And honestly, I wouldn’t want those wretched people coming with us anyway."
Ava stared at him.
Thomas continued without hesitation.
"I never wanted to share a new civilization with them. So perhaps this is better. We get to start over without having to carry all those useless people with us."
The words made him look almost pleased.
Maybe, in his mind, this was the perfect solution.
The people they considered worthless would disappear, while their family would be given another opportunity to live comfortably.
James leaned forward slightly.
"So we’re actually leaving Earth?"
"That’s what I’m saying."
Thomas smiled.
"We’re getting another world."
Their mother immediately looked delighted.
"Oh, that’s wonderful."
She placed a hand against her chest.
"Imagine a new Earth. I would be thrilled to be among the first people to see it. It’s almost too good to be true."
"But it is true," Thomas replied.
They had all watched the government broadcast, but none of them had initially believed it.
They assumed it was simply another announcement meant to calm the survivors and give them something to hope for.
Now that Thomas had confirmed it, however, the situation felt completely different.
James suddenly turned toward the television.
"I want to hear more about it."
He grabbed the remote and switched between channels.
Nothing.
One channel.
Static.
Another.
Static.
Another.
Nothing but a black screen filled with interference.
"What’s wrong with the television?"
He changed the channel again.
Still nothing.
Because of the special facilities provided inside the fortress, they had managed to keep the government news station functioning, but almost every other entertainment channel had disappeared.
Madison glanced toward the television and frowned.
"Everything is fine, but I just wish they had given us better food."
She looked down at the noodles with clear dissatisfaction.
"How could they bring us into a fortress like this and not even bring the best chefs?"
She pushed her bowl away.
"What is this?"
She stood up and walked toward her room.
"I’m going to take a bath."
Ava barely paid attention to her.
She remained against Thomas’s chest, seemingly more interested in something else.
"Brother."
Thomas looked down.
"What?"
"What about Simon?"
Her eyes sparkled.
"I know he’s here. I want him."
Thomas immediately understood what she meant.
"Can’t I have him?"
She pouted.
Thomas couldn’t help but grin.
Ava had always been his favorite person in the world.
He had spoiled her for years, and there was almost nothing he wouldn’t do to make her happy.
Getting Simon for her was hardly a difficult request.
"He’s been recruited into the same position as me, so don’t worry."
Thomas patted her gently.
"I’ll get him for you."
Ava’s eyes widened.
"Really?"
"Of course."
Thomas smiled.
"There is nothing I won’t do for you."
Ava immediately jumped up and threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly.
She was so excited that she could barely keep her feet still.
For her, everything was falling into place.
Especially now that Luna was gone.
It had always been easy whenever Luna was removed from the picture.
All Ava needed to do was make sure nobody looked too closely at the truth.
James had married Luna’s mother first.
Unfortunately for her, she couldn’t give him a male heir.
James had accumulated too much wealth to simply allow everything he owned to eventually pass into another family, and that fear eventually pushed him into marrying again.
That was how Madison became part of the family.
However, James’s mother, Martha, had never been happy about the arrangement.
She had deeply loved her first daughter-in-law and hated watching her being treated as though she were worthless.
But the woman Martha had supported was seriously ill.
Eventually, she died.
After her death, the family began making plans to take control of the properties and place everything under their own names.
For a while, it seemed like their plan would work.
Especially after Madison gave birth to a son.
But then Martha made a decision that changed everything.
The true owner of the family wealth was not James.
It was Martha.
And she was the one who would eventually decide who inherited everything.
That was when Luna suddenly became important.
The girl who had been bullied and ignored for years began receiving Martha’s attention.
She was favored.
She was protected.
And naturally, Ava hated it.
But nothing enraged her more than watching Thomas become closer to Luna.
Ava couldn’t tolerate the thought of losing her brother’s attention to the girl she despised.
So she became determined to destroy their relationship.
Little by little, she pulled apart anything that connected Luna to the family.
Every misunderstanding.
Every argument.
Every betrayal.
She made sure Luna became isolated until eventually, the girl was treated like an outsider in her own family.
Ava smiled at the memory.
"Thomas."
"Hmm?"
"I’ll be jealous if you get married."
Thomas laughed softly.
"Don’t worry."
He leaned over and kissed her cheek.
"I’m not planning to get married anytime soon."
Ava smiled happily.
For her, everything was finally going the way she wanted.
But somewhere outside the fortress, Luna was still alive.
And none of them knew it.
*****
On the other side of the fortress, Bonnie paced nervously through the hallway.
She had been walking back and forth for so long that Chris finally noticed.
He approached her slowly.
"Still worried about Luna?"
The moment Bonnie heard his voice, her composure broke.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
"I don’t know what I did, Chris."
Her voice trembled.
"She’s not the same anymore."
She wiped her face with the back of her hand, but more tears followed.
"I’m scared she’s dead."
Her breathing became uneven.
"I’m terrified that I’ve lost my best friend."
Bonnie broke down completely.
Chris stood there silently.
He didn’t know what to say.
Because he had been hiding something from Bonnie for a long time.
Something she didn’t know.
He was deeply in love with Luna.
Not just a little.
Not casually.
He had fallen for her completely.
And now, just like Bonnie, he had lost her.
The thought of Luna being dead had been eating away at him.
Bonnie suddenly looked at him.
"She’s rich."
Her voice carried a little hope.
"I saw her at the safe zone before everything happened. I’m sure she survived."
She frowned.
"So why didn’t she come here?"
Chris had no answer.
He couldn’t tell her the truth because he didn’t know it himself.
Instead, he stepped forward and pulled her into a brief embrace.
"We need to pack our things."
Bonnie looked up at him.
"What?"
"We’re leaving soon."
He tried to keep his voice calm.
"Remember the evacuation mission."
Before Bonnie could respond, a loud booming voice suddenly echoed throughout the hallway.
The announcement came through speakers mounted along the fortress’s massive pillars.
"Attention all survivors."
Everyone around them immediately stopped what they were doing.
"Gather all your belongings."
The voice continued.
"Gather your family members and friends currently residing inside the fortress."
A brief pause followed.
"We will be leaving in sixty-two hours."
Bonnie’s face went pale.
Sixty-two hours.
They were actually leaving.
But Luna was still out there.
Bonnie couldn’t move.
She stood frozen in the middle of the hallway, her thoughts racing.
Luna was alive.
She had to be.
She couldn’t simply leave without knowing what had happened to her.
Chris watched her carefully.
"I know it’s hard to accept."
His voice was softer now.
"Even I’m having trouble with it."
Bonnie turned toward him.
"No one can survive out there."
Chris swallowed.
"I think she’s dead."
Bonnie’s eyes widened.
"And after everything she did to you, I don’t think she deserves you anymore."
The moment those words left his mouth, Bonnie’s expression changed.
She stared at him for several seconds.
Then she slowly walked away.
Chris remained where he was.
"Bonnie..."
She stopped but didn’t turn around.
"Maybe I shouldn’t have involved you."
Her voice was cold.
"I lost my best friend because of your influence."
Chris’s expression fell.
Bonnie continued.
"Look where it brought us."
She finally turned around.
"Don’t think I’ve forgotten what you did."
Chris lowered his head.
"I was willing to let it go. That’s why I brought you along to help me talk to Luna."
Her eyes became red again.
"But after everything that happened, I’ve realized something."
She wiped away a tear.
"I was an idiot for doing that."
Chris stared at her.
Bonnie took a shaky breath.
"And maybe..."
She paused.
"Maybe I don’t deserve her after all."
With those final words, Bonnie turned and walked away, leaving Chris standing alone in the hallway.
He didn’t chase after her.
He couldn’t.
Because deep down, he knew she was right.
