Chapter 57 Going home I
Chapter 57: Chapter 57 Going home I
Luna swerved the vehicle and pressed a button on the control panel. The moment she did, the massive armored machine began to transform. Metal plates shifted with a series of loud mechanical clicks until it resembled something much closer to an ordinary car. She hadn’t even known it possessed such a feature.
At the same time, the panel before her lit up with glowing instructions, displaying exactly how to operate the newly transformed vehicle. She followed them instinctively, her hands gripping the steering wheel while her eyes darted between the road and the holographic display.
Without hesitation, she slammed another button.
The engine roared like a wild beast finally set free.
The sudden acceleration jerked Ethan violently where he was strapped to the front of the vehicle. His entire body swung sideways from the force while everyone inside instinctively covered their faces, except Adrian, who still sat motionless as though his soul hadn’t yet caught up with his body.
The vehicle shot forward at an unbelievable speed.
Ahead of them stretched a massive fracture splitting the road in half. Chunks of broken asphalt continued to crumble into the darkness below while the earth groaned as though the world itself was dying.
Kai’s heart nearly stopped.
"That’s a jump over there!" he shouted, clutching his chest. "We’re going to die! Luna, turn around! Let’s find another road!"
His breathing became shallow as panic settled over him.
Beside him, Adrian, who had been unconscious for so long, suddenly opened his eyes. It took him only a second to realize he was inside a speeding vehicle racing toward a cliff.
"What... what am I seeing?" His eyes widened in horror. "This isn’t supposed to work! We’re going to die! Luna, please... no! I can’t watch this!"
He buried his face into the seat, refusing to look up.
In the front seats, only Rowan and Luna remained focused.
Neither dared blink.
"I hope you know what you’re doing," Rowan muttered, forcing himself to stay calm despite the fear clawing at his chest. "Because this has gone beyond insane."
He wasn’t the type to scream.
But even he was beginning to regret staying quiet.
The vehicle continued charging toward the broken edge.
If everyone inside was terrified for themselves, then Ethan had it even worse.
Luna might have forgiven him, but leaving him strapped to the front of the vehicle while it prepared to leap across a gigantic chasm was enough to traumatize anyone for life.
As the vehicle reached the edge—
Everyone’s seatbelts suddenly tightened around their chests.
A safety mechanism had activated.
Adrian immediately reached for a small plastic bag and vomited into it.
Then...
The vehicle launched into the air.
The jump wasn’t small.
The fracture stretched so far that for several seconds there was nothing beneath them except darkness. They floated through the air as gravity seemed to pause around them.
For one impossible moment...
Silence.
Then something else moved.
Behind them, a monstrous creature burst free from the collapsing buildings.
Apparently trying to escape the destruction itself, it noticed the airborne vehicle almost instantly.
Its enormous body unfolded grotesquely.
Long, wriggling mandibles shot outward like living ropes, each lined with enormous pincers sharp enough to pierce steel. Massive wings spread across the sky before beating with tremendous force, allowing the creature to chase after them with frightening speed.
No one noticed it.
No one except Adrian.
He slowly lifted his head...
And froze.
The creature’s gigantic eyes locked onto his.
For that brief moment it felt as though time itself had stopped.
His body refused to move.
Even breathing became difficult.
His hands trembled uncontrollably.
"Aren’t... aren’t you all seeing that?" His voice cracked. "It’s coming after us..."
He grabbed his head with both hands, digging his fingers into his hair.
"God... I want this to end. I really want this to be over."
He repeatedly slammed his fists against his thighs, desperately trying to wake himself from what felt like another nightmare.
Kai immediately turned toward him.
"What now, dude?" he asked, trying to keep himself together despite everything happening around them. "I’m here. We’re not going to die. We’re together. Luna’s taking us somewhere safe... to her house."
His words were meant to comfort Adrian.
He couldn’t let him lose hope now.
Not after everything they’d already survived.
Adrian’s trembling hand slowly pointed toward the rear window.
Kai instinctively followed his finger.
The moment his eyes landed on the creature...
He screamed.
"AHHHHHHH!"
"Luna! Turn around! Do something! We’re being followed!"
The creature’s horrifying mandibles wrapped around the rear engine like enormous hooks, trapping the vehicle before beginning to drag it backward through the air.
Its gigantic wings beat powerfully, each flap creating violent gusts that shook the entire vehicle.
Only then did everyone realize...
It could fly.
A winged abomination.
What could possibly be worse than that?
Luna glanced through the mirror and immediately slammed the accelerator.
The engine roared again.
But nothing happened.
The vehicle barely moved.
The creature’s jaws had locked onto the rear section so tightly that every ounce of power from the engine was being overwhelmed.
"We’re going into its mouth!" Kai shouted in complete panic. "We’re going to get eaten!"
As usual, whenever danger appeared, Kai’s voice became the loudest.
Ethan was screaming too.
Strapped helplessly to the front, he watched the creature slowly dragging them backward toward its massive mouth.
His blood ran cold.
He was the closest target.
If that thing bit down...
He would die first.
And judging by its enormous size, the rest of them wouldn’t survive long afterward.
How were they supposed to fight something like this?
They barely had any strength left.
This creature was enormous.
Against something that powerful...
They looked completely helpless.
Ethan shut his eyes.
For a brief second...
He accepted death.
But Luna refused to.
Instead of continuing to fight for control of the steering wheel, she activated the vehicle’s automatic driving system.
The controls immediately shifted.
The system took over navigating the airborne car, attempting to steer it away from the creature.
Luna let go of the wheel.
With one smooth motion, she pulled out both pistols.
She rolled down the window just enough to aim.
Her expression remained frighteningly calm.
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
The bullets struck one of the creature’s massive mandibles.
A large section exploded apart, sending chunks flying into the sky.
The monster released a deafening shriek.
But before anyone could celebrate...
The missing flesh began regenerating.
Right before their eyes.
The torn mandible rapidly grew back as though it had never been damaged.
Kai stared in disbelief.
"It’s regenerating..."
Then...
Something strange happened.
A familiar warmth spread throughout his body.
His eyes widened.
He instinctively lifted one hand.
Tiny droplets of water floating in the air suddenly gathered around his fingers.
His breathing stopped.
"My..."
His voice trembled.
"My powers..."
His eyes lit up.
"My powers are back!"
Excitement replaced fear.
"Shit! Everyone, check it out! I can actually feel it again!"
The familiar energy flowing through his veins felt stronger than ever.
Then he slowly looked back through the window.
The terror disappeared from his face.
His eyes turned cold.
Emotionless.
Almost deadly.
"So..."
He raised both hands.
"...it’s time to send you back to oblivion."
Water vapor from the surrounding air surged toward him from every direction.
It gathered above the vehicle like an enormous storm cloud before spiraling into a massive torrent.
Kai swung both arms outward.
The torrent exploded across the sky.
Instantly, the water froze.
Hundreds...
No...
Thousands of glittering ice shards appeared overhead, scattering across the heavens like countless stars.
The frozen fragments shimmered beautifully for one breathtaking moment.
Then Kai clenched his fist.
"Fall."
The entire sky answered.
The countless shards shot downward all at once.
Like divine judgment.
Every single spike slammed into the creature’s enormous body.
Its wings.
Its eyes.
Its legs.
Its chest.
Nothing escaped the relentless barrage.
The monster released a horrifying screech that echoed across the ruined city.
Cracks spread over its frozen body.
A second later—
BOOM!
A violent explosion erupted in the sky.
Ice and fire collided together, engulfing the creature in a blinding sphere of destruction.
The deafening blast echoed through the air while flames consumed what remained of the monstrous abomination.
Its final scream rang across the broken city before its enormous body lost all strength.
The creature plummeted into the darkness below.
Silence followed.
