Chapter 35: Chapter 35 No thank you??

Coming out of the alley, they stopped immediately to catch their breath, both panting as they thought about the disaster that would have befallen them if help hadn’t arrived at that exact moment.

Allen was about to keep running when his eyes landed on the injured member of his squad. The man was bleeding heavily, struggling to stay on his feet, forcing Allen to stop in his tracks.

Adrian, who had been at the front the entire time, didn’t move anymore. His brows knitted together as something important crossed his mind.

"We shouldn’t have rescued them. Just look at Luna—she’s not here. We left them in the middle of danger, and what exactly did you decide to do? Rush off and bring back strangers."

The accusation landed heavily as Kai stared at him, unable to find the right words to defend himself.

He stammered for a moment, glancing at the faces of the military men who were slowly getting closer. The zombies had stopped chasing them, but that didn’t mean the danger had disappeared.

"You don’t get to blame me for that," Kai finally shot back. "We were both passing by when we heard those screams coming from the alley. If you were in my position, what would you have done?"

Adrian scoffed, his face completely expressionless.

"I would’ve prioritized the most important thing—getting back to Luna and the others where we left them. Fuck... this is my fault. The portal failed because of me."

His fists clenched tightly as guilt spread through his chest.

Before he could continue blaming himself, another desperate scream echoed from behind the military group.

"Help!"

The soldiers immediately gathered in circles around one another, their voices filled with panic as they tried to understand what was happening.

"Now what?" Adrian muttered, glaring at them. "Aren’t these the same squad that attacked the bunker before we left? They didn’t even thank us for saving their asses. Instead they acted so damn rude."

Kai paced back and forth, trying to gather his thoughts.

The place where they stood had once been a massive military office. Now it was nothing but a mountain of broken concrete and twisted steel, almost completely torn apart until it looked like it had been shredded by a giant beast.

"Wait... what am I even saying?" Kai suddenly looked at Adrian. "Why don’t you just teleport us back to where Luna was?"

Adrian slowly shook his head.

It wasn’t like he hadn’t thought about it already.

His magic simply refused to respond.

The moment he tried opening another portal back to Luna’s location, his ability completely stopped working.

"Do you honestly think I’d still be standing here if I could?" Adrian snapped.

Kai flinched slightly.

"What is going on with you? I’m not the source of your problems. It’s not my fault your portal failed. You only had one job—to bring everyone through safely—and you couldn’t even handle that."

He paused before delivering the final blow.

"What a failure."

Normally, Kai’s teasing words carried a playful tone.

Not this time.

Every single word was filled with venom.

Adrian stared at him for several long seconds, completely speechless.

His chest tightened.

He wanted to fire back.

He wanted to say something that would wipe that expression off Kai’s face.

He swore in his mind that he wouldn’t lose this argument.

But before another word could leave his mouth, the screams coming from the military grew even louder.

The two of them instinctively turned around.

A painful moan echoed through the ruined street.

"It hurts..."

The soldier collapsed onto his knees, clutching his arm.

"I... I can’t take it anymore..."

His cries sounded filled with exhaustion and agony, but Allen refused to listen.

"We can still do something!" Allen shouted. "Take him back to the base! Maybe... maybe they’ll find a cure!"

His voice was so desperate that it almost sounded as though logic had completely abandoned him.

Kai blinked from where he stood.

"I thought zombie bites turned people into zombies."

He frowned.

"So... what exactly is he trying to do?"

For a moment Adrian forgot his own panic.

Allen’s reaction was strange.

Very strange.

The way he spoke...

There was actually a cure?

"Standing here won’t help," Adrian muttered. "Let’s get closer and see what’s going on."

Kai had already become curious.

Without another word, the two quietly walked closer until they were near enough to clearly see the injured soldier.

The man’s skin had become unnaturally pale.

His face slowly turned greenish while thick veins bulged beneath his flesh, spreading across his neck and cheeks like tangled roots.

Kai grimaced.

"That doesn’t look normal."

"Carry him to the base!" Allen ordered once again.

Adrian deliberately coughed, making sure every soldier turned to look at him.

"Just in case you people aren’t seeing what I’m seeing..."

He casually pointed toward the infected soldier.

"He’s infected."

Silence.

"He’s about to turn into one of them."

Another pause.

"So... there isn’t any hope for him."

He shrugged carelessly.

"Sorry to burst your bubble."

Who was he kidding?

Adrian wasn’t sorry in the slightest.

In fact...

He felt strangely satisfied.

After risking their lives to save these soldiers, not one of them had bothered to say thank you.

Instead they looked down on them as though saving their lives was expected.

It was insulting.

Allen slowly turned around to face him.

"So you’re saying..." he started.

"Oh, one more thing," Adrian interrupted with an innocent smile.

"Don’t you think you guys owe us a thank you for pulling your asses straight out of the jaws of death?"

Allen blinked once.

Then his expression hardened.

"Isn’t that your duty as an Awakened?"

The words landed like a slap across Adrian’s face.

For a brief moment...

Everything became silent.

His expression darkened.

The little patience he had left completely disappeared.

"You know what?"

He let out a dry laugh.

"Fuck you."

He pointed directly at the infected soldier.

"I hope he dies."

The words had barely left his mouth before the infected man’s body suddenly jerked violently.

Bones twisted beneath his skin.

His back bent at an unnatural angle.

His entire body convulsed as horrifying growls escaped his throat.

Everyone froze.

The soldier suddenly threw his head upward.

A deafening roar exploded from his mouth.

His eyes had completely lost their humanity.

His teeth buried themselves into the neck of the nearest soldier.

Blood sprayed across the ruined pavement.

The victim screamed in absolute terror.

The infected monster ripped away a chunk of flesh before immediately throwing himself toward another soldier standing opposite him.

Another bite.

Another scream.

The entire formation instantly collapsed into chaos.

"Open fire!"

Bullets rained down nonstop.

Yet the creature refused to stop moving.

Even after several rounds tore through its body, it continued charging like a beast that could no longer feel pain.

The bitten soldiers stumbled backward, clutching their wounds as panic spread across every face.

"Keep them away!"

"They’re turning too!"
