“Yes, I know. Don’t worry, I’m not so stupid as to gamble the rest of my life away,” Qian’e said.

Qiao Mei drove Qian’e home before returning to her own house. When she reached the main door, she could hear Xia Yang crying loudly. She thought that he must be missing her again, so she quickened her pace and entered the house.

When she pushed open the door to the room, she saw Xia Yang lying in the pram and crying loudly. The other three children were surrounding him and trying their best to coax him. When they saw Qiao Mei coming in, they could not help but start crying as well.

“Don’t cry anymore! Wait for Mama. I’ll go and wash my hands now!” Qiao Mei quickly went to the bathroom to wash her hands. After that, she stopped to give each of the three children a kiss before she prepared the powdered milk mixture and fed Xia Yang.

She was so familiar with all these tasks that she did not even need to stop and think. She could do all these even with her eyes closed.

The three older children had already started going to school. Xia Fan and Xia Xing had reached the age to be enrolled in kindergarten. After two years, they would progress to elementary school. Xia Yue was still young and not of school-going age yet, but he really did not want to be separated from his older siblings.

In this era, such rules were not very strictly enforced. It was a time when the country needed talented people. So long as his presence did not disrupt classes and affect the other students, Xia Yue was allowed to go to school with Xia Fan and Xia Xing. “Alright!” the children said excitedly.

Apart from their parents, they liked their eldest uncle and second aunt the most. Every time Xia Wen and Xia He came to visit, they would bring many, many toys and a lot of delicious food. They would also bring all types of snacks which Qiao Mei did not allow them to eat. Xia He would secretly pass them the snacks when no one was looking.

Qiao Mei was in a good mood today so she cooked personally for the children. It had been a long time since the children had tasted Qiao Mei’s cooking! Everyone was in for a treat today.

The next night, Qiao Mei sat in the courtyard and watched the children at play. She took a look at the time and noted that Qian’e must be at Huang Xuan’s house by now.

Suddenly, Da Zhuang and Xiao Zhuang appeared in the courtyard and yelled out, “Sister-in-law! Are you at home? We saw your car outside!”

“Eh? Why are you here?” Qiao Mei asked in surprise.

“Then where should we be?” Da Zhuang and Xiao Zhuang stood rooted to the spot and asked in confusion.

Qiao Mei immediately realized that something was wrong!

“Didn’t Huang Xuan invite you to dinner?” Qiao Mei asked quickly.

“No, why would that guy treat us to a meal? He’s always trying to avoid us!” Xiao Zhuang said disdainfully.

“Get in the car! We have to go to Huang Xuan’s house! He tricked Qian’e into meeting him!” Qiao Mei shouted.

“What!” Da Zhuang said in shock.

“Xiao Zhuang, you stay at home and look after the children. Da Zhuang and I will go and look for Huang Xuan and Qian’e,” Qiao Mei said as she analyzed the situation calmly.

Xiao Zhuang nodded and said, “Sister-in-law, leave it to me. Go now!”

Along the way, Qiao Mei prayed that nothing would go wrong and that Qian’e would be able to protect herself well. It was already 8 p.m. At this hour, if a man and a woman were found to be in the same room together, it would become a scandal when word got out, even if they did not do anything at all.
