Chapter 95 – The Prize is Right
“There you are!” shouted the headmaster as he stomped over to me. He was furious about something. “What in the world were you thinking, boy?” He stepped up and grabbed me by the wrist. “Do you think that joke about monster sympathy and slavery abolition was funny?” His hand tightened around my wrist.
“Ow.” The headmaster’s grip strength was nothing to scoff at. It hurt. Though, I was surprised he thought my statement was a joke. Perhaps I wasn’t assertive enough in my declaration.
“When the winner of a school event conducts themself like that, it brings shame to the whole school.” He yanked me around. “And admitting to horrible crimes isn’t as great of a prank as you think.” He sighed. “Goodness me. Why did a troublemaker like you have to win?” His hand clenched tighter.
Penrin wrapped her fingers around the headmaster’s arm and squeezed hard until he let go. She said, “Who do you think you’re dealing with, old man?” Her death glare could kill a rabbit from fear. The strong protective attitude she had filled me with a feeling of safety. “The only one who gets to hurt Yarm like that is me.” That feeling went away as fast as it came.
The headmaster pulled his arm back. He huffed some discontentment and then said, “So be it. What is done is done.” He straightened out his sleeves. “For now, you shall receive your prize, boy. Come with me to the school’s vault.” While walking away, he turned back to say, “Your friends are not allowed to accompany you.”
I got a little worried that I was being led into some sort of trap, but I cast aside such paranoia.
Newmill said, “Have fun, Yarm. While your away, I’ll sample all the food stalls to find the best tasting stuff for you.” He smiled and a bit of drool came out of the side of his lips, which he promptly sucked up.
“For me, huh?” I said.
“Come along,” the headmaster urged. “I have a meeting that I need to lie at, coming up soon.”
Well, I certainly didn’t want to keep him from that. I followed the headmaster through the school. Now that Sports Day was over, the participating students were able to enjoy the festivities without worrying about competition. The crowds were a little bit of a struggle to get through.
I was led through many sections of the school that I had never been to. It was almost like receiving a tour from a tour guide that disliked me. Eventually, we came upon a descending staircase. We went down and passed through many many sets of doors.
Each door had a lock that was more secure than the last. With only a glance to go off of, I felt like I could unlock the first four doors with ease. Anything beyond that was probably beyond my ability.
The headmaster was cautious to lock the door behind us, each time he opened another door. There was no chance of anyone following us.
After passing through enough doors to make my head spin, we finally made it to the final vault door. It was a huge imposing metal door with several dials all over it. The headmaster took some time to open it.
Upon entry, I saw a vast number of sparkling treasures. Gold pieces piled the sides of the room like mounds of sand. There were jewels and gems all over the place. The main dish of the feast for my eyes, were all the magical-looking items. Trinkets that only existed in tales were present in this room.
“Woah.” My jaw had dropped and left my mouth wide-open for the stale air to seep in.
“Yeah yeah,” said the headmaster. “I’m a busy man, so you have five minutes to pick something.” He tapped his foot impatiently.
I only had five minutes? That wasn’t nearly enough time to go through all the items in this place. A lot of the stuff in here was simply stuff of high monetary value. The magical items were what I needed to sift through. They would be much better rewards than anything that could sell well.
I picked up the closest looking magical item. “Is this a genie’s lamp?” I asked.
“No,” said the headmaster. “It’s just a normal lamp.”
I picked up a rectangular mat and said, “Is this a flying carpet?”
The old man shook his head. “Just a regular old carpet.”
“What about this?” I held up what seemed to be a monkey’s paw.
“Ew! What is that?” The headmaster recoiled. “Why is that in here?”
This guy was no help whatsoever.
